Budget: U/B control

by Mganthemindmage on 04 November 2015

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (15 cards)

Sorceries (1)

Instants (6)

Planeswalkers (2)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

How to Play

A deck made to get out the big guys fast. scry for the leviathan or for the sphinx, once one of them are out, make your damage count, but also remember to look for the leviathan. He will terrify your enemies and smash them. I pondered adding some detain, and some mechanics like it. Ashiok is in the side board with all of my milling. I added this for decks with hexproof and shroud ( thou shroud is rarely seen anymore.) i might remove interpret the signs for curse of infinity and murder may be reduced to two so I can add grizzly spectacle, not sure yet. let me know what you guys think.

Deck discussion for Budget: U/B control

* I think you do have too few creatures. Yes, control decks have fewer, however, this isn't ironclad control that can work off a few beaters that finish a game after you got control, this is a mid-range aggro-control deck. 6 out of the 12 creatures you have are are 1-drops for early defense - it's okay you have them but this leaves us at just 6 creatures for offense. Hexproof or not, this isn't enough, a Wrath of God for example might leave you without creatures for 10 or so turns. Also, while it's good to have early blockers, these 6 creatures will have to take all the creature removal the opponnent has.
There are, of course, 100s of possible additions. I don't know which cards you have, what your budget is and if you are willing to obtain new cards at all or prefer to make use of the cards you already have, so I will just name a few to give you ideas:
- Baleful Strix/Tidehollow Strix: Both are very useful for this deck, the former is the better card but also more expensive moneywise. However, I do think it fits your playstyle very well, so trading for Baleful Strix is recommended since you'll be able to reuse them in other decks as well.
- Stinkweed Imp: Also nice defence that can get reused.
- Fog Bank: One of the best walls ever made, solution for about anything that hasn't trample.

* There is no reason for adding Psychic Spiral. It's the only mill card, so the mill part is useless at best and helping the opponent in the worst case. And you also don't really need the reshuffle part. This would be the first thing I would cut to make room for more creatures.

* Benthic Giant: Not really a good card - maybe try to trade for more Prognostic Sphinxes which are better in about 90% of situations (and you can get them for what, 30 cents?). Other possibilities within the editions you seem to have been boosted:
-AEtherling
- Archfiend of Depravity
- Desecration Demon
(The latter two lack evasion but they are both big hitters and help keeping opponent's creatures at bay - you might cut some actual creature removal to make room)

* Stormtide Leviathan: Also not a really good card. Has bad synergy with the Benthic Giant (but not with the Archfiend, Demon, Imp and Strixes I suggested). Here are some budget friendly suggestions to replace him:
- Deep-Sea Kraken: (for multiplayer)
- Inkwell Leviathan
- Quicksilver Gargantuan

* Cast into Darkness: I think there are better solutions that this, Clinging Darkness for instance. Also, at this point you have to ask yourself if you really need more ways to mess with creatures. That depends on your metagame of course, I don't know what you usually have to play against, but in my enviroment you'd better off having some solutions for non-creature permanents in this slot.

* Hubris: Should probably be Into the Roil or Recoil.

(Incidentally, to anyone who doesn't listen to this dude: "I PITY THE FOO'! I PITY THE FOO'!!" ) (My Mr. T impersonation) BTW, I'm from the States, so, yeah...we hang like that (ie, to anyone w/ any sense...it's all good). :) Unfortunately, there's a lot of people in the States who have no sense. -.-

Hehe, yeah, when you look at how you guys vote or how the advertisements work, that seems to be the case. Also explains all those teleevaneglists, motivational speakers and so on ... maybe B.A. should have become one.

Well, problem is whatever you guys do over there, we will do as well some years later ... not everything of course but in many cases we just copy the bad habits. That may have something to do with corporations actually doing the politics behind the curtains but you can't explain away everything with that ... we aren't that much better, sadly. It's like the entire (western) world is heading for Idiocracy (seen this movie?), only that we don't need 500 years to get there.

The bottom line, unfortunately, is the bottom line...& when the bottom line trumps all, it trumps all. Song cue: Sowing the Seeds.

lol np sometime you need to get it out dude, I understand. :D

BTW thx puschkin for the help. it pained me to get rid of the spiral though, in my meta any mill u get is like a gem. and grave yard control is HUGE in my meta. most of the time if i can mill someone they give up.

I don't understand. Why would anyone GIVE UP when you mill a few cards? They should cheer instead ... the graveyard is a resource like cards in hand and your library. Whatever hits the graveyard can be reanimated, reused and recylced. There are even cards that only work when they are in the grave!
Yes, graveyard control is huge in any meta, as it should, but graveyard control actually means you *prevent* them from filling their grave either by exiling or shuffling them back ... you guys have it upside down :)

But by all means, keep the Spiral if it works for you, it's just hard to give proper advice in that case :)

I need t ask you a question, if i can't use the giant in this deck, then where would I use it?

0

No pressure, & no problem. :) My style is more creative than competitive (beyond the KT, that is), so I may not always be ABLE to help, but when I can, I'm more than willing...& when I can't, I may be able point you at someone who can. A lot of the guys on this site are actually pretty cool about that.
