Deck Description

Legality:
Standard, built with cards from the block: Shadows over Innistrad (Shadows over Innistrad, Eldritch Moon) and Battle for Zendikar (Battle for Zendikar, Oath of the Gatewatch)

Idea:
I found some Curious Homunculus in the Eldritch Moon Boosters and I'm always looking for a good deck-idea for a friend. I wanted to build a rather controlish standard deck for him which he could play on beginners and FNM tournaments.

The first search I did was for additional creatures that benefitted from a high number of sorcery's/ instants. Mercurial Geists and Docent of Perfection are both finishers, supported by Bedlam Reveler which also added some more carddraw for mid/ lategame.
Next came the control spells. Broken Concentration and Turn Aside to counter my opponents spells, Galvanic Bombardment and Lightning Axe to remove anything that might make it trough.
Pieces of the Puzzle was added to get those spells into my hand while Take Inventory would also be able to get creatures out of the deck faster. Rise from the Tides was thrown in as additional finisher.

Price before adding special lands: ~24$ (2016-09-05; Mid Value)

Tests:
This deck exists only on this site and has never been played against another deck. Regardless I'm open to all suggestions and ideas that may help to improve this deck.

How to Play

Keep yourself alive with counterspells and removals until one of your creatures hit's the board, tough "Curious Homunculus" first needs some spells in your graveyard to transform into something dangerous.
"Pieces of the Puzzle" can draw you control-spells and put spells that you don't need at the moment in the graveyard to increase the number for "Bedlam Reveler" or "Curious Homunculus".
Finish your opponent with any of your (transformed) creatures or with a zombie army from "Rise from the Tides".

Deck discussion for U/R Standard: Spellslinger 1

Personally, I'm not fond of the 4 mana required to cast Mercurial Geists. If it was a clone of Wee Dragonauts, I'd like it more. So 4x is troublesome. Maybe reduce them to 3x and increase the number of Curious Homunculus to 4x, it is your mana dork and its flip side is relevant.

Any reason you're sticking with just one block? Because there's some other cards in BfZ that'd fit this deck quite nicely.

Changed the number of "Mercurial Geists" to 4 and "Curious Homunculus" to 4. The reason I was running only 3 of him was that I first didn't have "Broken Concentration" in the deck. With 'only' 10 spells (now 13) his mana could be used to play I didn't want to have to many of him on my hand or (untransformed) on the battlefield.
No particular reason, I only could stutter something about 'keeping it standard as long as possible', but new editions also bring new cards and options so this should be no reason. What cards where you thinking of?

Cool.

Stormchaser Mage is arguably better than Mercurial Geists, if only for its much lower cmc. At two mana, Stormchaser is definitely a candidate for 4x.

Jori En, Ruin Diver supplies regular draw. A little slow though, as you have to play two spells to get the draw, and you can only draw once per player's turn.

Thing in the Ice both clears the board and gives you a large beat stick.

"Stormchaser Mage" looking good, though I will try a split first. Don't know if I ever come to test this deck, depends a lot upon a friend (for whom I did built this). If he likes it, it will get tested, if not, it's another deck from my list that vanishes and never saw play.
This is also the reason why I didn't include "Thing in the Ice" as I simply don't know how high his budget would be. At the moment I'll sideboard 2 cards not to forget it.
