Deck Description

Choo, choo, all aboard the discard-train!

This is a Budget Elder Dragon Highlander deck (BEDH for short). It is meant for the Elder Dragon Highlander format, a.k.a. Commander. If you are not familiar with the format, I'll link it below for you.

I mostly use MTG Vault for my own private projects nowadays, but feel free to comment or request a deck of your choice. I've loved the Vault so far, and I like that they are still improving on it, as well as I am improving on my English language skills.

So, if you like what you see, consider checking out some of my other budget-y work from the link below.

How to Play

The Capenna cards are now available, and I think I'm gonna give a couple of spins to the new commander cards around. Let us start with Toluz!

Tolus is quite a peculiar one: they reward you from discarding some cards, then killing Toluz later on to recover the cards discarded. This way you really don't lose your cards at all - at least not permanently, I mean.

A few things to consider: first of all, Toluz needs to DIE in order for you to obtain your cards. So watch out for all those exile and "return to owner's hand" type of effects! This deck has a couple of sacrifice-engines to make killing Toluz easier. Second of all, this deck needs to build up its victory step by step, so no flashy game-enders out of nowhere! Create tokens using several different enchantments, such as Dying to Serve, suck some life points using Feast of Sanity and perhaps even mill opponents out with Mystic Redaction and Folio of Fancies, if the game drags on for too long!

+ Very resistant against discard effects.

Cons:
- Winning requires quite a lot of setup.
- Vulnerable to exile and "return to owner's hand".

Deck discussion for BEDH: All Aboard!

I have an odd feeling that toluz might be somehow suicidal, or that he's the only thing keeping things on track.

A long time ago, a decktype called trainwreck was played, and I might be wrong, but my intuition tells me toluz might be conniving into that specific scenario, so it might be an idea to look up the decktype.

I didn't know such decktype once existed!
A funny coincidence!

R&D has been known to throw stuff like this at us.
It gives of the impression that they have a largescale plan :)

Trainwreck was based on a zombie and somehow getting most of your library into the graveyard, so toluz could be an obvious hint towards a revival of that decktype.

The zombie was wrecker something, and the deck was likely named trainwreck because the graveyard was filled by a train of cards or something like it.

There's other hints in the conductor, like he's a conductor, he gets stuff into the grave and his name is pretty close to the words "to lose" you play him, saying "to lose" deeply annoying the opponent by comboing.

It's pretty much a recipe of annoyance.

If you can find the key to put it together.
What's in his hand ? Anyone got a magnifying glass ?

I once wrote a piece about how R&D hid cards for a donate / beeble deck in the art.

I think they might be hinting at something here as well.

Back from searching:
It seems my memory failed me on the naming.
The card involved in the original builds were helldozer.
I'm pretty sure that the decktype evolved into dead guy ale later.

It's hard to track down decks as old as these because of all of the distorting memes building up around them.

Anyways, Helldozer is the key to the old deck, and it must be around a little older than 2008 versions of the deck.

Oldest reference I could dig up was: trainwreck 1.4 "this time it's personal" which was from 2006, so the original predates that year.

Mentions of the oldest variants puts it as a recursion deck, which may be why I "remembered" it as a decktype that filled your own graveyard, but it seems like a 6/6 was unstoppable back in that era if your lands were gone.

Staff of domination and cabal coffers must be how you dug up the single helldozer that the deck used back in those days.

I hope you didn't get too derailed by this :)

The core of Trainwreck is just the Urborg, Coffers and Staff of Domination. What you do with all that incremental value afterwards is up to the person piloting the deck. At the time it was popular, Helldozer was simply the best thing to play and generate more value by denying your opponent resources. Nowadays there are things like Grave Titan or Walking Ballista, but at this point it's a fringe deck at best.

For some reason I remember it as a graveyard deck.

Still, toluz only has 1 toughness.
