Modern R/B Deck

by planestalker on 18 April 2012

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (15 cards)

Creatures (1)

Sorceries (3)

Artifacts (3)

Enchantments (2)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

Have just thrown together an idea for a standard deck.

Lots and lots of mass removal synergizing with creatures that come back from graveyard or are indestructible with lots of spot removal for any left over blockers. The deck deliberately doesn't have artifacts or enchantments in maindeck so as to gain virtual card advantage against decks that have main board artifact and enchantment removal.

Sideboard heavy in artifact removal and screw you cards and light on enchantment removal as to be expected in a Black/Red deck.

Deck is is generally built to screw blue/white token decks and various aggro weenie decks that seem to be everwhere.

I know the deck is a little too heavy in Black and Red Sun Zenith Cards and Dismember.
What should I replace the extra Zenith and Dismember cards with?

Need suggestions for improvements in number and quality of creatures.
Are there any really great sideboard cards against blue/white token decks?

Deck discussion for Modern R/B Deck

I love the deck schematic. personally I'd just take out two black suns and put in two tribute to hunger. that way you get some life in case they have big creatures out. or go for the throat. both are effective. I'd watch out for lockdown decks though. since you only have seventeen creatures total, it isn't too unrealistic for a w/u deck to be able to simply counter, bounce, exile or tap most creatures you play. but over all, high chance of winning if you pull a fast hand, or control heavy hand.

Hi Marduk_Severin,

Tribute to Hunger is a good idea in main deck and I hadn't thought aobut it but Despise in sideboard to help take out hard to remove creatures and planeswalkers.

I've decided to not put in Go for the Throat except possibly in sideboard. It is an excellent spot removal card but Tragic Slip and Dismember just have more utility.

Thanks for input if you have any deck you'd like me to look at post it here.

A good way to improve your control matchup would be some targeted discard spells, I am not sure what is in standard for it but duress is pretty good if it is available.

Hi Enterti and cavemanben01,

Unfortunately Duress is no longer Standard, but as cavemanben01 pointed out Distress, Night Terrors, and Despise are Standard. Despise looks good in sideboard. Distress maybe what I've been looking for
to replace what I think maybe a few too many Zenith's and Dismembers. At three mana Night terrors is sideboard card at best.

Have made changes accordingly. Thanks for input.

How about Gut shot? It's a great way to activate morbid for brimstone volley and tragic slip. it also helps against inkmoths in ramp. Prob. only good as a 1 of though, since your not running shrines it loses utility (which is the only reason I run it).

Get Bonfire of the Damned instead of Zenits :D

Hi Jestrix,

Interesting idea. But I think Bonfire of the Damned is technically only superior to Black Sun's Zenith when it is a miracle.

As this deck has no wayto search, find, and re-order cards there is no way to hurry into a Bonfire of the Damned miracle. I also think I would prefer to use Black Sun's Zenith because it reshuffles itself into the the library. As Bonfire also is Mythic I really don't want to spring for the cost just yet.
