Back when I made the deck cards like Mind Sculpt were too expensive, so I had to find alternatives. I had a bad run of games where I couldn't draw a Sphinx's Tutelage, got angry, and added Perplex to transmute. I made the deck the way I would want it now but increased the budget. Dropped Mirari, added the crab and Windfall, which has some fun synergy with the deck, I think.

Thanks, I added it in place of Psychic Corrosion, which I don't have and can't afford anyways.
You really do like mill, don't you? So I updated the deck to include things I have changed over the years. As an expert on mill, what do you think about the use of Mirari Conjecture here?
Oh, shiny new card. I think I will add both.
Middle school. And I wish, but no, it is before school, during study hall, sometimes lunch, and in an afterschool club or program. Currently I don't do it any time, because of COVID. I follow Arena to stay current, but its the cards in my hands and the person across from me that I enjoy about this game, aside from the deck-building theory crafting endless timesink nonsense.
Thanks, I will check them out. This was made to teach the concept of mill while staying within a strict $15 budget. It is pretty bad, really, but hard to make better without more $. I think I updated the actual deck by splashing black for Breaking//Entering and Perplex to transmute for Sphinx's Tutelage.
I have a deck progression I work students through that builds the complexity of thinking and math, and you are exactly right. I even have separate burn decks; one is all sorceries (Magnivore and Lava Axe, oh yeah) and the next builds in instants. The complexity spike that being able to respond at instant speed, and having to hold back your mana for the chance, is something I have seen many new players struggle with. Its like in chess when you learn to start thinking moves ahead and seeing your opponents perspective. I have several decks with complex math on purpose. One is a ridiculous defender deck with lots of X mana costs (Axebane Guardian, Overgrown Battlement, Clan Defiance) where I require the player to keep a chart with a record of how much mana they have available each turn.
Like something with Hapatra?
I just found this conversation and was greatly amused.
Love it; it has been switched. The amount of math and thinking involved in MTG is underappreciated.
Cards I would suggest from my G Devotion deck are:Karametra's Acolyte for more mana. Garruk's Companion and Kalonian Tusker have great bodies and a 2G mana cost for devotion. Acidic Slime also adds two to your devotion and has a great ETB effect for removal of pesky permanents.
This is my first black deck, aiming to be fast and efficient. The discard mechanic is one I wanted to try out as a defense, but am unsure how much discard is the right amount, or if it will even be effective. With all creatures having some added value through ETB I figure a little too much discard isn't a bad thing. Thoughts?
