Deck Description

One of two Temur decks I'm testing for DTK standard, going back and forth on which approach I like best. This is the "Midrange" strategy, I'll post a link to the "Dragons" strategy I'm comparing it to below. This deck uses a heavy creature base with Stratus Dancer backing up the classic Den Protector/Deathmist Raptor combo, Whisperwood on the top end helps hide them and acts as our big threat. Unlike the typical Temur decks this is GUr rather than GRu, the red splash is for some removal in the manner of Roast and Dragonlord Atarka and finishers like the singleton Crater's Claws (always good to have one). Sarkhan Unbroken also makes an appearance as I think he's great in any deck that supports his colors.

How to Play

Game plan is simple. Play creatures, early and often. Try to overwhelm the board. We're a little bit on the slow side with no mana dorks so don't be afraid to play those turn 2 morph creatures face up as early threats, especially Stratus Dancer. We're aggressive but we also don't mind going into the late game, we just want the advantage early on.

Against early agro decks like mono red we sideboard in Nylea's Disciple and Hornets Nest in place of the Protector/Raptor combo (save one Den Protector, it's good to have) since they'll likely have boarded in some number of Anger of the Gods. Hornet's Nest dissuades early aggro but it's also a great surprise when manifested in by Whisperwood Elemental. Both the nest and the Disciple are both hit by Anger but by that point they'll have already done their damage.

Against "Dragon" decks of any sort we'll usually rotate out Roast for Disdainful Stroke. If those decks are attrition based it's sometimes worth it to also bring in Display of Dominance as added protection, especially if there's a chance Ashiok might be in the board as she wrecks us.

Against Whip and Abzan Control Hornet's Nest, Disdainful Stroke and Destructive Revelry are all tools that you usually want. It just depends on the configuration of their deck.

Against Heroic, Nest and Destructive Revelry are also well wanted.

Late game Temur Sabertooth becomes a beating. He's best when manifested as you can flip him over EOT and then have his ability to bounce manifested spells, save a creature, dodge removal/live through a wrath or just EOT bounce Den Protector or Stratus Dancer for added value. Nothing like bouncing Surrak in response to a wrath so you can untap and swing for eight. It's possible that in the future I will lose the Sabertooth's in favor of a playset of Elvish Mystic's to speed up my game. Right now I'm thinking that late game the elf is just so sad as a draw or a manifest and I usually spend turn 1 with a come into play tapped land anyway but we'll see, the mystic might just be the better move.

And that's it. Pretty straightforward
