yep this is the one used in the pro tour. But, i actually didn't originally source it from magicthegathering.com i found it on a forum. However, it's not just about me netdecking, it's about showing everyone on this site an awesome deck, and the fact is that knowing how to play it correctly is more important. To be honest when folks go down to the nationals they should be well acclimatised to net decks and what to expect from their opponenets.

One thing: Be careful with Chalice and picking the mana cost you want to shut down, as nowadays in Extended, a Boomerang, a Path, a Deny Reality or a Man'-o-War can "return" Marit Lage to your hand, thus making it disappear altogether (not to mention an Act of Treason or Slave of Bolas can take it and beat you to death with it). Otherwise, good job.

This is just one question, and I am only asking because I am just not quite sure. A basic swamp says tap to add 1 black mana to your mana pool. I think everyone knows that. Here is my question. Urborg says every land is a swamp in addition to its other land types. So that doesn't automatically make all your lands be able to tap for swamps, or does it? I thought it just made them swamps as in like nightmare which says its power and toughness is equal to the number of swamps you have in play. Well if you play black and green and make all your forests swamps in addition to their type, that is great for Nightmare, but you still can't tap that forest for black mana? Anyway my pt is if I am right, then you can't get the 20/20 avatar until third turn.

0
Posted 05 December 2009 at 22:11

My other example is the old school dual lands. Lets pick Tundra for this example. It has the ability to tap for either blue or white mana, and also the card states that it counts as an island and a plains. If I play Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth it does not add the ability to tap the tundra for black mana, it only allows the tundra to count as three different types of land at the same time. So in example with Dark Depths, Dark Depths doesn't have the ability to tap for mana. So all Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth does is allow Dark Depths to be a Legandary Snow Land - Swamp. Just because it has the type on it now it does not have the ability to tap for black mana. So third turn is the fastest you get that 20/20 out there.

0
Posted 05 December 2009 at 22:23

Also it does not make urborg have the ability to tap for mana, so i would just recomend using the depths and then use a swamp then cast a dark ritual use that mana to cast hexmage, so second turn you get out the big guy. or you could do it first turn with a lotus petal. Anyway sorry for the long explanations and this is a good deck.

0
Posted 05 December 2009 at 22:32

@Shadow_Thief: All basic lands, and by extension their land types, have the implied ability of T: add whatever color to your mana pool. Putting Urborg out makes All lands have the land type swamp and does not give them the supertype basic.

Rule 305.6. The basic land types are Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest. If an object uses the words "basic land type," it's referring to one of these subtypes. A basic land type implies an intrinsic ability to produce colored mana. (See rule 605, "Mana Abilities.") An object with a basic land type is treated as if its text box included "{T}: Add [mana symbol] to your mana pool," even if the text box doesn't actually contain text or the object has no text box. Plains produce white mana; Islands, blue; Swamps, black; Mountains, red; and Forests, green.

Yeah I was just about to come on here and correct myself NightLoki. I asked my friend who is basically a judge and he told me the same thing. Basically if you make a land a swamp, you can then tap it for black mana. So I just wanted to apologize for wasting ppl's time, and for posting such huge comments. Hate to do this, but anyone who has time please click on my name and check out my deck that I am working on. I could use some suggestions. I would just say type in deck search Sin and Grace but for some reason you can't search for it. But anyway any comments are appreciated and again sorry for wasting ppl's time with the land-type dilema. :)

pretty cool but whats your backup? its really easy to get rid of marit lage. i would throw in some grim discoveries at least so you can bring the hexmage and the depths back to your hand in case they get rid of it. what if they extirpate your dark depths? but i LOVE the urborg trick im using that in my deck check it out if u get a chance lemme know what you think http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=37473
its not done yet im still looking for a second game changing combo in case marit lage fails.

mr peach. No you couldn't because ghost quarter lets the destroyed lands controller look for a basic land. So even though it would count as a swamp. It still doesn't count as a basic land. Just like bayou for instance, counts as a swamp and a forest but it still isn't considered a basic land.

Sweet Deck man, I won in 4 turns and only took 9 damage for the delay.

I think that Chrome Mox is probably the most important card other than the stated cards. Allows you to play two lands in the first turn if you get the chance. With that I literally only had to wait until I got a dark depths (I got hexmage in the first hand) and I won the game.

Well made deck. +1

0

yeah the chrome mox allows you to play your chalice for (2) so it comes into play with 1 charge counter on it on turn one (thus pre-empting path to exile, swords to plowshares, mark of eviction, ect)

Thoughtsieze can also pre-empt p2e,s2p, mark of eviction, ect. or anything else thats not a land that can hurt the combo.
And since p2e's, s2p, and condemend are instants, he can muddle them if he wants.
Vendilion Clique not only removes options from your opponents hand, but can remove junk and and options to yours. Can also be played on turn one if you got enough mox's in your opening hand.

But then so can Beseech the Queen, and since most of the deck is converted mana cost (1) or (X) which is zero till time of casting, you get quite the selection of "what do i need, right NOW!" in this deck.

That also helps soften the damadge done by dark informant (if it's (x) in its mana cost, you take (0) damadge!

My $0.02:

I like 4x Counterbalance and Sensei's Divining Top. And 4x Polluted Delta. And 3+ more fetches. 4xWatery Grave (or Underground Sea, lol). And less non-basics besides Dark Depths, Ghost Quarter, and maybe the Filterlands.

And maybe a few more counterspells. Like FoW, Daze, Mana Drain.
I'd also put in 4x Brainstorm.
I'd cut Repeal and Beseech the Queen. Put Repeal in the sideboard for the mirror maybe.

The secret with any combo deck, is protecting the combo, and preventing your opponent from combo-ing/casting/winning.

Good Luck! I'd be interested to see if this list evolves and what you'd choose for your sideboard :)

when hexmage first came out ... i thought about it ... and wasnt sure what else to put with it... hexmage is rediculous.. if i may add ... it kills planeswalkers... makes the everflowing chalice useless and shits on the fungus or anything based on counters...
aside from making a 20/20 avatar on turn 2...
great idea... i cant call it original but the deck looks solid...
