Deck discussion for Br Vampires

Like the looks of this one a lot more than the one you were posting on, obviously a good deck. :D

Hey Joe, This looks good. I just played with B/R Vamps at Game Day yesterday and took 2nd. I only lost to Tezz control (1-2), but it was a close match. I have 3x Sadistic Sac in my side deck which helped rip tezz and big jace out. I will post my later on today if you want to take a look.

Very interesting deck. What's your opinion on Gatekeeper vs Hexmage?

Gatekeepers came in handy a bit better than Hexmage for the most part. With the removal I was able to pull off early game, if they managed to get a creature out turn 3 or 4 it become subject of the Gatekeeper kicked. After he served his purpose he would get sacked to Seer and Highborn. With hexmage I had to wait most of the time with her in hand, she never really saw much play. Tezz and Jace never stayed on the field long due to lightning bolts and arc trails, and of course sad sacs.

Of course my meta on the low end of FNM is different than your at PTQ's and SCGO's

I would think that Hexmage is actually better in a low end meta, since they tend towards aggro decks, making his First Strike incredibly useful, plus his being 1 mana cheaper allowing another burn spell that same turn. Is this not your experience?

Sadly no, I haven't shared the same experience. I do agree that first strike is useful, however.

What kinds of decks do you usually face off with?

0

mostly control of some type, valakut every now and then. The only ones that tend to play aggro are the teenagers up there, mainly because none of them have jobs.

Huh. I guess that (assuming few Jaces and Gideons) such a meta would favor Gatekeeper. Interesting

I've never really liked Mark of Mutiny myself, but for standard this is pretty beastly man. Also, it's kind of awesome to see a Bob effect in standard, now if only they'd reprint Hymn to Tourach....

Sooooo True! On fortunately, MoM is needed in many match-ups, and can be very awesome. And if your ahead, then its a nice way to give a guy +1/+1 and haste!

0

I've only seen it necessary against Valakut, taking a Primeval to swing, and then sacrificing it to a seer is fuuuun :P

The meta shift of standard seems to be trying to make it weenie friendly, so it looks like I think the deck was called death and taxes... So MoM would probably be a two-of in the SB for me, but I don't play vampires, I play whatever my friends hand me lol.

UB control is still around, as is UW control. Both those match ups feature powerful creatures.

Eh, guess so, stealing a grave titan is pretty great, and same for sun. I've just never really liked steal cards really, I prefer to be the guy using donate on illusions of grandeur :D

I just noticed the connection lol

But seriously man, that thing is around recursive beaters, it has a devastating disruption package, and the sideboard could eat somebody. I seriously think that's the direction Eva Green should take.

id recromend shatter being a side board card unless the majority of people you play against run mean artifacts.
add some doom blades or go for the throat instead but this is pretty good. maybe like 2 captivating vampires wouldnt hurt just for the simple give vamps +1 is good enough

0

Actually it would hurt, captivators don't go in a real competitive vampires deck... Pretty good decklist raggedjoe.

The point of Shatter is to kill swords, not exactly an unimportant role with the new Sword. It might come out, but I would want to replace it with another red card, preferably one that kills equipped hawks.

GftT is great, but black. That makes it only ok right now, since Caw-Blade is the only deck I really worry about.

I don't like Captivating Vampire, as he is a 3 drop that is very easily killed.

Hey your deck looks nice, my suggestions would be:Hexmage should be side boarded, gatekeepers mainboard take out the 2 shatters and mainboard 3 go for the throat. Captivating is actually being mainboarded at 2 mainboard. i would drop dark tutelage to 2. also 8 fetchalands for 4 swamps seems overkill to me.

0

Why do you think that Gatekeepers are better than Hexmages right now? I think that the ability to kill planeswalkers and first strike is very important right now.

Shatter is something I've been testing, and a unsure of. I think it will come out, but I don't know what to replace it with. Why do you think GoftT should replace it?

I don't like Captivating too much, since he is a 3 drop that is easily removable. Why do you think he is good?

Dark Tutelage is amazing! It is a card I always want to have on the battlefield.

I have never used up all my swamps and drawn another fetch, so I don't really care about 2:1 ratio. It works.

@Eerie, @destrucsean; Craptivating Vampire is a poor mans Memnarch, his boost is wasted, as in that slot you could have played something so much more... Such as Dark Tutelage, draw power+aggro vamps=game upon game won.

@Joe; I've been thinking about the whole caw-go situation for B/r Vamps, and have to agree that 2 shatter maindecked is in fact the optimal solution pretty much. I've seen some interesting ideas about where people think aggro vamps should head, some even suggesting B/g, but I think you've got the nail here.

Bg? No way. Besides Br the only build that is better than mono-b is Bu, and the burn spells out-weigh the control elements that Bu offers, despite getting an the best manland in T2. I've tried to get it to work, but even Preordain/Mana Leak/Jace 1.0 is less powerful than Bolt/Arc Trail/Tutelage. Which is a real shame.

Thanks for the vote though man!

PS: Have you ever looked into Legacy Bant? I recently got an idea for a new take on Mythic Excalibur

0

Agreed, I'll consider B/w over anything other than B/r for vamps. The people who wanted B/g had been trying to reverse engineer Eva, without the good cards that make the green splash worth it.

And not really, I've made a few legacy bant decks here and there, but far and wide I use guilds over shards. Mythic however sounds interesting in legacy, and you're a great builder, so I'm interested to see how this turns out.

Well, I started of making it a mythic deck, but I soon realized that although its a very cool deck, there are simply a lot of awesome legacy cards that are, well... not mythic. Right now its a package Bant deck, with 3ish packages mb and another 2 sb

What's the deck that by far dominates the standard meta right now?

0

Because the decks that rule right now have swords in em.

0

Your deck looks great, but i would have to say put 2 hexmages on sideboard and 2 gate keepers in for some added creature hate. And i have read every post up till this one so i understand why you like her, but to be honest most planeswalkers worth anything drop on turn 4. Though thats not to say that they have had one in their hand, so in a fast paced deck like this one you should be close to winning around turn 4-5. Also since your looking to keep swords off the field might be of interest to put in crush instead of shatter which will save you mana for another spell.

0

Good points, especially about Crush. I'll do some testing and see if it works better that way.

0

I agree with some of the earlier comments, i run gatekeepers mainboard with hexmages sided out. I really like the shatters mainboard, lots of artifacts around, not to mention all the ratchet bombs sided in against you. I would look at sideboarding Memoricides over disfigure and gftt. Gatekeepers tend to be enough removal for me.
