Deck Description

... that this deck awesome.

People always say blue is the most powerful color in magic. Now, standard players think that's kind of silly, and even legacy players can have doubts, but if I ever even start to think that blue is not the most powerful color, I just have to look at this deck. Yes, it's technically a 5c deck. But in essence it is a blue deck with four splashes

Deck discussion for I Swear to God

I hear a lot of people complain about Oath decks, I really don't see why. It's incredibly fun, and has a real presence in the tourney scene that I enjoy.

This is a very nice deck Joe, and it makes me a bit sad that I'll probably never get to go against it.

I know what you mean man. There are decks that are just unfun for everyone involved. Oath is not one of them.

Moving on to this deck, there are a few innovations I would like to extole. Firstly is the structure, and my 36 1-ofs. Seeing many 1-it's is common in Vintage, but 36 is a lot. The rationale for this is linked to what may be my all-time favorite card, Gifts Ungiven. I love that card, precicely because it rewards clever and innovative deckbuilding. Gifts really does everything for you in this deck, it's a card that reads: "Demonic Tutor. Then do it again." --side note, the new Planeschase card has the most epic reminder text in HISTORY -- because of how I built the deck. Secondly we have another brilliant card in Oath, Dragon's Breath. I don't care what you think, anyone who does not play Dragon's Breath in Oath is doing it wrong. Thirdly is my counter suite. People invariably either leave out counterspells or go for 12+. My counter suite has never failed me: take the three best counterspells in the format and play the most foppies of each that you can. Vintage is a wonderful format and I'm sad it's reputation is far worse than it deserves. I love Vintage and will continue to build decks for it so long as people like you are there to appreciate them.

Thirty-six is indeed an unusually high number for even vintage, but after poking around with Gifts in Jace control and in twelve post, I have to say I'm loving the idea behind it.

I have always believed that Dragon's Breath is a card that NEEDS to be run in Oath, for the brief time I tinkered around in the deck, it was the thing that gave me a winning edge. I believe it to be one of the brightest moves in building the deck to include two, and seeing that you seem to be thinking in the same lines reassures me that you will entertain me endlessly with the Vintage decks you post.

As for the counter suite, I've personally been dwelling on a list such as this for Oath.
4 FoW
2 Mindbreak
3 Daze
I realize a list without even a singleton Mana Drain might seem a bit odd, but this list is close to the one I'm using in yet another Doomsday deck I've been working on, and so far I've had much more impressive results. Yes, I trade the stability against stax, but such is the way it must be when dealing with such designs.

And I've been wearing away at my friends false stereotypes of Vintage, and hopefully can get them to proxy test the format next time I do some kitchen magic. I've broken them slowly into legacy, and they accept the ideas of the format, but still have a distaste for it competitively.

I almost always enjoy your decks Joe, in fact I'd wager that I do, and seeing you build something so wonderful for Vintage makes me even happier than when you revitalized Affinty.

good deal of what you have said warms my heart.

I think your countrrsuie is fine, or even preferable in Doomsday (re: Flusterstorm), but I think that weakening yourself vs Stax and the mirror is not a good call g1. Maybe Storm combo is more previoent in your area, but I couldn't play Mindbreak Trap ms around here.

Sorry for the slow replies, it's 1:30 am I'm on my iPhone

For Doomsday weird setups usually wind up being the best it seems, like for a while it was
4 FoW
4 Duress
3 Unmask @_@

Around here it's mostly storm and dredge, seems to be the major part of Vintage in GA. Or at least here, I actually don't read reports for the larger tournaments very often.
