Deck Description

The gods are pissed. You burn now. In this deck, for the first time, I reveal an almost unknown combo involving Cinder Pyromancer and Chandra Ablaze. Details can be found in my comment bellow. To preempt questions of legality, I have run versions of this deck in tournaments before, and the judges have never rules against me in regards to this combo.

Deck discussion for Wrath of the Gods

This deck contains what may be the single most epic combo avaliable to a red deck: Chandra Ablaze and Cinder Pyromancer. When actions go on the stack, the prices of those actions are not actually payed until the action resolves on the stack... and tapping is fast enough to be done in response to an instant... Not sure where I'm going? It works like this:

Chandra Ablaze's Ultimate begins... Cast Spell 1
In response, use Cinder Pyromancer's ability
Chandra Ablaze's Ultimate continues... Cast Spell 2
In response, use Cinder Pyromancer's ability
Chandra Ablaze's Ultimate continues... Cast Spell 3
In response, use Cinder Pyromancer's ability
Chandra Ablaze's Ultimate continues... Cast Spell 4
In response, use Cinder Pyromancer's ability
Chandra Ablaze's Ultimate continues... Cast Spell 5
In response, use Cinder Pyromancer's ability
Chandra Ablaze's Ultimate continues... Cast Spell 6
In response, use Cinder Pyromancer's ability
....
ect.

The card says "Cast any number of...". Thus each casting is a seperate action that can be responded to, and the Pyromancer doesn't tap until his ability actually resolves, so you can queue any ability as many times as you want, you just need to be able to pay the cost each time it resolves... and each time he tries to tap, he is indeed untapped.

"When actions go on the stack, the prices of those actions are not actually payed until the action resolves on the stack"

This is not a true statement.

"the Pyromancer doesn't tap until his ability actually resolves"

...this is also not a true statement.

Your combo works, but not for the precise reasons you perhaps think it does.

i am guessing you are talking about the final ability of chandra ablaze?
its always an instant kill if you can play her last ability
your combo isnt necessary because it works already without cinder pyromancer
but anyways +1 for the trying

I'll agree it is usually overkill, but not always. A deck like Soul Sisters or blue control decks are sometimes able to survive Chandra's ultimate, and there really isn't ever enough burn in a burn deck. And every so often you have to improvise... I played a white deck that had a combo that redirected all of my spells to target a creature with protection from red. Cinder Pyromancer + Grafted Exoskelliton took care of him.
Inmost cases, yes, it is over kill. But who doesn't enjoy saying "and that's 74 damage and all your creatures die." (Pyromancer+Kiln Fiend + 4 Lightning Bolt + 4 Flame Slash + 4 Lava Spike)

Looked it up... either I'm missing something or that card doesn't help this deck at all...

sure it does, when you play a ligthning bolt it deals 6 dammage for three mana, wich is pretty hard, at least where i play, it can kill almost every creature and otherwise dealing 6 dammage to a player is always nice

Actually, Reverberate is a horribly inefficient card. It's blue-colored precursor, Twincast, IS good and so I think that's where people get this false idea of Reverberate also being good. Twincast is great for setting up storms, massive mills, etc. It helps increase the efficiency of a blue deck. Reverberate will cause a loss of efficiency instead.

Anddddd... none of these can be done in red. Hense Reverberate sucks.

i've used reverberate very succesfully, but it dosent really go with this deck because he already has a bunch of burn.

Both >_>

If you can't, then Kiln Fiend. More reliable, cooler art, lower cost, etc.

Btw, congratz on hitting the upcoming list!

^^Hahaha I think I'm going to throw him on the sideboard unfortunately... For some reason whenever I play him or kiln fiend in this deck people make a point of destroying him... Upcoming hits list? Awesome!

They make a point because Kiln Fiend is what I call a removal magnet. Either they deal with him (which wastes spells for other threats) or he'll become a BIG problem.

When I play my Black Sacrifice deck, a third of the time, my Mortician Beetle is junked the instant I play it. Same thing. =]

No Browbeat? No Black Vise? No Rift Bolt? You seem to have lots of creature removal, but I don't think it would go too well against another, more player oriented burn deck.

I would have to agree with my friend here you need some of these cards to make your burn deck meaner also i would suggest quest for pure flame that with some of those card messes people up

Not to mention that Chandra will be an easy target for another burn deck or a creature heavy deck... getting her to up to 7 might be a bit of a challenge with no defense.

Not as much as you'd think to be honest. With Kiln Fiend out, he can just blast away your blockers with the burn and kill you with combat damage =P

It drives me nuts when someone starts whining about certain cards screwing up a deck, or nulling the strategy. Every deck has a flaw, every strategy an Achilles heal - the game is kinda designed that way!!! If it wasn't, we'd all play the same boring ass deck and MTG would suck. Thats why there are banned cards. So good for ya, big deal. You can point out the obvious. I say fuck Leyline of Sanctity. Its a damn good deck!

I'm not sure I understand why the Arid Mesa's are in the deck though... it seems that that is just a silly loss of life and that replacing it with perhaps other special lands would be better.

called fetch lands, helps fill the deck, and if ur drawing into bad stuff you can just tap and shuffle

0

Mmm, that reminds me, any reason you dont want to throw in Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle...not that you want to make yet another Valakut deck (so passe!), but it could be another very effective option and if you have Arid Messa included already...why not!?!?!

@backtotheprimit
I'm guessing it because valakut enters tapped, if getting a land taped wouldn't bother him, he would of put something that doesn't make him loose life when he fetches (evolving wilds/terramorphic expanse)

0

fetchlands help you retrieve the mana you need at a very low cost(1 life), in addition to this they thin out your deck making you more likely to draw into what you need/want. fetchlands are useful for any deck even mono colored for that very reason, thinning.

0

yes, and fetchland that cost 1hp are better than the ones that cost nothing (Terramorphic Expanse and Evolving Wilds) simply because the lands don't come on the field tapped, which is the reason I' guessing the person didn't put valakut in

On the issue of reverberate and Channel...
they are great when used it decks that use spells like Fireblast, X damage spells, or really any other expensive spell.

please comment on my slivers gone wild deck I wanted to do 100 points for the first time but it stopped at 95...

hmm ever think about quest for pure flame? it makes your combo do twice as much damage xD which means you could pretty much kill any number of player or creatures as long as they dont got protection from red

Good concept, and l like the clever nuances of the stack being abused so harshly. It feels great to be a red player.

@ surewhynot:

Reverberate is a functional reprint of Twincast, which itself is a functional reprint of Fork, which is a red spell. Also, you don't need to reverberate a Lightning Bolt to do lots of damage; think about burn spells with X in their mana cost; Reverberate copies those. Think about cards like Quenchable Fire; reverberating that produces a whopping 6-12 damage for only 6 mana. I've been devastated by the latter combo countless times. Reverberate is far from irrelevant.

Personally I like this deck, I have always wanted to make a burn deck and that is a cool concept. I have begun creating, (very slowly) I got an Ablaze from a friend, now just 2-3 more and some more burning spells to keep her alive. Nice deck.
