Deck Description

I created this $20 budget deck to play a little mini-tourney with friends. If it's successful I'll take it to FNM. Originally, it was going to be a flashback U/R utilizing Burning Vengeance and Secrets of the Dead (with Guttersnipe and Young Pyromancer). I wasn't able to make this deck satisfactorily and meet my $20 budget so I switched it up to it's current form.

Current mechanics are to drop Runechanter's Pike on either Delver of Secrets or Invisible Stalker.

Deck discussion for Budget Delver

Hey guys, I'm back to MTG after a 4 year hiatus :) Lost my old Vault account, but oh well. I would appreciate any comments on this deck. I'm trying to keep it modern so I can take it to FNM if it ends up performing like it should. Plz ignore the sideboard as it currently includes a bunch of cards that I cycled out of the main deck as I switched mechanics.

Will Return Helpful Comments!!! Thanks much :)

... Particular concern to me is card advantage. I'm not real confident with the draw cards I chose and would really appreciate advice from an old hand at U control

Well... I'm not exactly an old hand, as such, but I've been playing straight control decks for about a year now. I'd say that rather than running a lot of sorcery speed card draw like divination, forsee etc. you run instant speed card draw. That is more expensive to come by, and 20$ can be a tight budget for this archetype, but I think that cards like Steam Augury and Thought Scour don't cost too much money. That way after you t1 delver or whatever you can do on the early turns you can leave mana up for counterspells, then if they play nothing steam augury at the end of their turn. I particularly like Steam Augury type effects, as they let you see a much larger portion of you library than just straight: draw 2 cards. Think Twice also works nicely like this, so you could rotate that back maindeck, and put divnation in the sideboard. Forsee can stay maindecked though, because it lets you see at minimum the top four cards of your library before you decide which to keep. The most important thing about those cards though is that you don't sacrifice the ability to control, and that's critical for a Delver deck with a threat down.

I also feel like you could run only 3 Runechanters Pike, as you hopefully only need one to win the game. That would free up space for a fourth Izzet Charm, which gives you some extra control power, as well as a way to dig for those crucial Incinerates to win the game.

Sorry my response is so late, and I hope you enjoy playing the deck.

steam augury is a nice suggestion, thanks. think twice has been on my radar, I'm going to test steam augury first and might slot in or sideboard think twice if it works well.

I've built and tested this deck a little bit and it seems pretty inconsistent. Still a small sample so far but its hitting all over... too much mana, too little, wrong color. Often heavy on either counterspell or burn without a good mix. But when it does click it is sooooo fun.

With win conditions so limited in this deck I think I have to keep 4 runechanters in. winning without them is near impossible.... against the decks I usually see a turn 10 win is slow and so far this deck hasn't been consistent enough at control to slow them down every game.
