Deck Description

Once again, I am trying to subvert Modern and some of the really, REALLY annoying decks that are played.
But this time, I am trying something a little different in terms of winning the game. I am trying to win with Ashiok, Wicked Manipulator and her ultimate ability by wiping out my opponent's deck in one fell swoop.

Orcish Bowmasters isn't in here because I only have one, which is in my Rona cEDH deck and nobody near me stocks them. IF I had them or access to them, they'd be in here already.
Shattered Sanctum are also because I couldn't get my hands on enough Marsh Flats and Godless shrines, aka any of them, so they're here as part of Damn just in case you are indeed desperate for a boardwipe. Ideally I'd have Urborgs, Marsh Flats and Godless Shrines to actually fill out the land base to make it all better.

How to Play

Main goal here is to exile everything possible. Don't mulligan too far, but going down to 5 cards in hand in order to Leyline a Scam or Murktide player shouldn't be overlooked since that is just going to stop most of their gameplan.
I know that Tombstalker isn't exactly a great card, but it is essentially also a blocker against flying creatures such as Murktide.
As much as I do also hate the Scam, I see the value within the play, and it does also combine well with Ashiok's ultimate ability. Therefore there is a small Scam package in here. This is your main early game goal.

Deck discussion for Delving into Nightmares

Considering how long the cycle of incarnations seem to be "good" I find it odd that none are using them with cards that can be played from exile.

Also why hasn't people started to use skyline of sanctity to avoid grief ?

Or that counterspell that takes out spells cast without their casting cost being paid ?

That's a good question! I think the thing is with the Leyline cards is that for them to be effective against cards like Grief with how fast Modern is, they have to be in your opening hand, and people aren't willing to mulligan down to find an out that MAY help them against a deck. The Leyline cards being 4-drops in a format ruled by 1-3 drop cards, or ways to cheat out bigger cost cards, is also a liability for some people considering they are essentially defensive passives. Leyline of Sanctity is also white, which is the least played colour in Modern if the stats I've seen are anything to go by.
A lot of my "Sample hands" that I would keep don't even have LotV in hand, because the Scam element is just too strong to pass up. Exiling a Tombstalker to double-Grief turn one seems potent enough to hold onto, even if there is the chance of being hit by the same sort of play.

I also don't recall a lot of cards that can be played from exile, and the ones I do have a hefty cost, such as Skaab Ruinator requiring 3 creatures in grave to exile, or a sphinx with a very high mana cost.

I'm also unfamiliar with the counterspell you have mentioned here. It does seem a bit niche unless cards like Force of Will or Force of Negation are everywhere too amongst blue decks.

Around 2018 I had two major builds built by evolution to participate in modern, one was an expert design with two skyline and of sanctuary in main board and one in sideboard. It also featured 2 leyline of the void in mainboard and one in the sideboard, and both were used very successfully, despite a lot of people questioning the idea itself.

To be honest I have faced a meta with mill with total disregard of people there playing 4 leyline of sanctuary, though I did sideboard 2 echoing truth in such games after game 1.

"Nix" is a pretty unknown card which specialised in taking out spells cast for free, and I suspect that magic being magic, at tournaments you will hit multiple situations in which you can cast it. It will hit both pitch spells as well as 0 cost spells, which is a detail few notice.

So is modern filled with free spells and 0 cost spells at the moment ?

Only free spell that I see regularly is Mishra's Bauble, but that is mainly in Murktide decks because of how easy it is to proc Delirium with for cards like Dragon's Rage Channeller. Most of the cards I see these days are 1-3 drops. Or have ways of being cheated in, like Foothills Cascade.
There is also the Beanstalk deck that plays a lot of big cards, but that also has heaps of ramp.

Well I took a look at a bunch of modern decks, and here's the number of free spells in the first 5 decks that I looked at.

Grief & fury.

Endurance (sb)

Fury & solitude.

Subtlety, demonic dread, violent outburst, force of negation.

Summoner's pact.

I haven't seen such a solid range of free spells in a long time, so I guess your meta is out of the ordinary ;)

Murktide regent variants use subtlety, fury and mishra's bauble as well.

The seventh deck that I've looked at had no free spells in main or board, so I'd say in most modern metas Nix would be playable, and a decent sideboard card if nothing else.

MAJOR UPDATE:
Now that Fury is banned in Modern, and playtesting, I've done some slight modifications to this deck:

-1 Ashiok, Wicked Manipulator
+1 Swamp
-2 Leyline of the Void
+2 Dauthi Voidwalker in sideboard

2 Leyline of the Void moved to sideboard
1 Damn moved to sideboard
3 Sheoldred, the Apocalypse moved to mainboard
2 Unlicenced Hearse moved to mainboard
*Fetchlands to be added when I find which ones I have

Basically 21 lands felt like SLIGHTLY too little, and with Ashiok being a 5-drop, one copy was cut. Also since a scammed Grief is an absolute beatstick.
Leyline shouldn't be as necessary anymore since Scam style decks should be out. Hearse is a welcome replacement instead to help deal with graveyard decks mainboard, such as Murktide and Yawgmoth.
Sheoldred is now in main because one thing that this deck can suffer from is how quickly you can pay life before Ashiok hits the field with cards like Dismember, Street Wraith and the Fetchlands. She's also a fantastic beatstick of a creature and removal/counterspell bait.
Dauthi is also going into the sideboard in case of more graveyard decks, while having a use outside of Leyline's starting in an opening hand, and a possible tech choice to steal a good card from opponents.
