Instead of chief engineer, maybe hubris, thassa, quickling, or dakra mystic? I think you'll get more utility out of these cards instead of the chief. Quickling plays especially well with ornithopter, hubris will save an ensouled ornithopter or landmine token, and both dakra and thassa give utility (even if you can't meet thassa's devotion).
