Deck Description

Inspired by, and in response to Whitey's deck, "Go Golems Go"

http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=100911

I had been considering methods of utilizing Precursor Golem's strengths whilst minimizing his inherent weaknesses. I had, until seeing Whitey's deck, thought to run U/G for Turn Aside, Asceticism, and Withstand Death. But then, seeing Throne of Geth in his sideboard, I realized the potential to use creature sacrifice as a means to prevent unwanted spell replication.

I decided to use Whitey's idea for U/B, using Distortion / Tainted Strike as primary win conditions, but also to focus more heavily on creature sacrifice and proliferation to make the deck playable in a multiplayer format (which is 90% of what I play), where a quick win versus one player often means the two or three remaining players ganging up on you. Also, from my experience, proliferate is a surefire way to gain at least one ally ;)

Deck discussion for Golems 'R Us

You may want prototype portal for those multiplayer games. Imprint precursor, so that if your old one is, say, exiled or bounced, or you just want more of them, you can throw more out there upon command.

do you think you need golem artisan? It's a good card, but precursor golem only works with spells, not abilities... maybe rusted relic? or another card to protect your golems?

Golem Artisan is just a great card. His ability doesn't need to be copied for it to be effective. He's a mid-to-late game turn-around, granting trample or flying to even just 3 or 4 creatures is often enough. Personally, though, if I were to trade him out for anything, it'd be more Steel Overseers. I might be trading for a third one tomorrow, so that could change this deck around a bit.

Looking back, I also think two Liliana Vess would be a good addition. With the decent amount of proliferation present in the deck, she'd make a reliable tutor, as well as a good way to reclaim a few of those Golems if I should fail to protect them through a turn.

Does turn aside help protect golems when precursor is on the field?
Wouldn't say lightning bolt get copied first and then you end up only being able to counter one?

The spell would not copy if the original spell is countered. Countering a spell occurs at the time of casting, prior to the spell being cast. If once all of the steps and conditions required to successfully cast a spell are met, then any abilities are added to the stack that trigger when that spell is cast.

http://www.wizards.com/magic/comprules/MagicCompRules_20101001.txt

See section 601, 601.2a and 601.2h.

Similarly, if the original target is sacrificed prior to the spell being cast, then the spell will not have a legal target, and will not be copied. Or, if all Precursor Golems granting the replication ability are sacrificed prior to the spell being cast, then the source(s) of the trigger ability will not exist, and the spell will resolve as normal without being copied.

Just wanted to comment on this even though it is a older deck/post.

Sadly Turn Aside will not protect you golems from the Precursor Trigger effect. If you read 601.C it clearly explains that at the moment a spell is cast and it targets it will be replicated.

You have to go through 601.a - 601.h for each spell, even if you are countering another spell.
So 601.a - 601.h for Lighting Bolt and then 601.a - 601.h for the counter meaning everything in the middle happens even if it is being countered.

So say that they are casting Lighting Bolt, choose its target, its considered Cast and goes onto the stack, so before you can cast your Counter, once it hits the stack, the triggered ability of the Precursor Golem procs and the Lighting bolt is Copied to the rest of the Golems.

The best way to protect your golem is a way to sacrifice it as a cost or splash Green for buffs or making your creatures unable to be targeted since your instants are replicated also. Vines of the Vastwood is a great example.
