Deck Description

This is a classic Simic evolve deck, which I built out of a bunch of Simic cards I bought. The deck is a very slow one, so be warned.

How to Play

This deck plays slow, so I get a lot of creatures out early to save my life for when the evolves get really powerful. I try to get Adaptive Snapjaw high while other creatures block for it, then get out Prime Speaker Zegana when Snapjaw is really high. Then I generally just cipher hands of binding on Zegana to crush whatever opposition the opponent might have. Reminder: this deck plays very slow, so don't try going up against a battalion or anything...
Good Luck!! :-)

Deck discussion for Simic Evolve: Chump To Champ!!

Should this stay Extended legal? Because there are tons of great cards in older editions that would fit. I don't even know what's currently in Extended, so I shoot right away:

* Aquastrand Spider would provide a good defense against flyers.

* Kitchen Finks and Spike Feeder are both very good lifegainer in this: The Feeder gets you more life for each counter you manage to put on it, the Kitchen Finks are great because if you put a +1/+1 counter on it, that can negate the -1/-1 it gets from persist, so it can come back once again.

* Trygon Predators would add some artifact and enchantment removal without reducing the creature count. (better than the Demolok in my opinion)

* Fog again ... I don't know how many times I wrote this, but here we go again: There are so many variants out there that have additional effects. Yes, they usually cost one more mana, but I think it's worth it:
- Respite
- Constant Mists
- Spore Cloud
- Moment's Peace
- Tangle
But in this deck you could also consider
- Spore Frog
- Hindervines.

* Imaginary Pet would be a great way trigger evolve several times.

* Fertilid could provide you with a lot of extra lands.

* Plaxcaster Frogling can protect many of your creatures.

* I would play Give//Take over Burst if Strenght and/or Bioshift.

* Lands to consider replacing some of the basic lands:
- Oran-Rief, the Vastwood
- Novijen, Heart of Progress
- Llanowar Reborn

With the exception of the Fog replacements, all of these suggestions are Modern legal and mostly budget friendly.

Thanks. I'll definitely look into these. my one disagreement is taking out Bioshift. If one of your evolves dies, you can salvage the counters

I'm also not a big fan of Fertilid. Just my opinion...
Also, why bother putting in Oran rief if you have novijen?

Oran Rief produces green mana opposed to colorless and doesn't require mana to operate.

You can salvage counters via Bioshift of a creature that is about to die due to spot removal, however, if you do that when a creatures is about to die from combat, removing the counters may cause the opposing creature to survive, since damage doesn't use the stack anymore. I'd rather put more counters on it via Give and actually save the creature than salvage counters.

In retrospect, keep the Bioshifts! I just realized that they serve another important purpose: You can transfer counters away from creatures with evolve that have become too big to get any more counters.

I love simic. However, personally I'd run more quantities of the creatures that give you more bang for your buck. Elusive krasis will almost always trigger evolves on creatures in play. In late game you can bioshift counters to him and have a huge unblockable beast. Thanks for commenting on my simic deck too.

Seems a little scatterbrained. I will name cards that seem out of place, than suggest some that you really should have.

Out of place:
Charging Badger - no evolve
Drakewing Krasis - no evolve
Kraken Hactchling - no evolve, okay defender though.
Nessian Demolok - no evolve
Wall of Frost, no evolve ... are you sensing a pattern?
Wasteland Viper

Beautiful (Budget) Simic Cards
Vorel of the Hull Clade
Renegade Krasis
Bioshift

A deck doesn't have to have the same game mechanic on every single card in order to work. In fact, in a lot of cases, this will only lead to one-sided and unimaginative decks.
Besides, sometimes the choices you make are decided by the cards you have available ...
Having said that, some of the cards you mentioned ARE questionable, but it's not that they don't serve a purpose.

For example, while Kraken Hatchling doesn't have evolve and could be replaced with Experiment One (also costs 1 mana, does have evolve), Kraken Hatchling does have a purpose that Experiment one cannot offer: A sturdy early blocker. This deck is slow, so it can definately make good use of the Hatchling early game even though it will be less useful later on in the game. But as a wise player once told me "there isn't always a mid- or lategame but there will always be an early game". Kraken Hatchling helps you surviving until midgame where this deck starts evolving (pun intended).

Also, a lot of the cards you mentioned are to help my creatures to evolve. As for charging badger, he can be paired with forced adaptation to have a crazy trample late game. Also, I kind of just find him funny (1/1 trample ) :-)

Then again, you could upgrade him to to Llanowar Elite. It is highly unlikely that you ever play him with kicker, however, he has no drawback compared to the Badger.

Llanower elite isn't modern legal, and I would like my deck to stay modern

The point is not that the cards I mentioned are bad ... just that other cards have more synergy with the evolve mechanic. Notice that I did not call out Pheres for not having evolve, because he just fits.

For example, Cloudfin Raptor should be as powerful as Kraken Hatchling Turn 3. However, dropping Kraken Hatchling turn 2 or 3 may be worth it, as it could trigger 2 or 3 evolves.

Vorel of the Hull Clade is ridiculously powerful. So are cards like Master Biomancer and Renegade Krasis, which keep the evolve shenanigans coming.

If you are on a budget, Hydras are amazing. Other useful mechanics are graft and scavenge. For Example, Vigean Photohydra can be very useful. A card I particularly like is Sporeback Troll.

Maybe you can glean the type of deck organization that is optimal (not required) from here!

Not so much, but I could spend a little. Why?

0
Posted 23 June 2014 at 16:16

How much? cause some of the cards you run don't really fit in there.

Replacing the cards is not expensive. Simic can be pretty cheap as long as you avoid blatantly obvious powerhouses like Master Biomancer and Doubling Season.

Well play 4 Cloudfin Raptor, 4 Experiment One, 4 Crocanura if you don't want to spend way too much money, then play 4 Elusive Krasis, 4 Forced Adaptation 3 Zameck Guildmage 3 or 4 Bioshift, 3 Urban Evolution, 4 Shambleshark, 4 or 3 Drakewing Krasis and 4 Vigean Hydropon, also some proliferate would be awesome, anyway, like this you could win in a casual environment but if one guy spends 30 or less $ on a deck, you're f*cked. I like the vast amount of cards you use but i think every deck is worth spending 10 to 30$. Also i love Adaptive Snapjaw play it as a 3 or 4 of.

This is my budget simic deck: http://www.mtgvault.com/theswarmer/decks/budget-simic/ it's just a bit different from my real life simic deck.

Or I will look at yours 'cause I 'm a sucker for Simic.

If you want to keep most of the cards just play 4 Cloudfin Raptor, 4 Experiment One and 4 Shambleshark, without these plysets it's worthless. I would cut Charging Badger Ivy Lane Denizen 2 Pheres-Band Tromper Wall of Frost Wasteland Viper Battering Krasis 2 Fog Burst of Strength and Ghostform that lets 11 in, also (MUST HAVE) 4 Elusive Krasis if you don't play against contol too much.

Well, I'm back! One month has come and gone, and in honor of my getting back, I'm considering making a gulgari or izzet deck. Stay tuned!!

0

Why don't you make a somewhat original deck? If you make yet another Golgari or Izzet deck, half of the deck's content is already set. I really don't get why a) people keep on building and posting these redundant decks and b) those decks are the ones that draw the comments. Again. And again.
Probably for the same reason why everybody complains about reruns in TV but statistically speaking reruns do actually better than new things :)

Soooooo what your saying is that I shouldn't just do guilds but get creative with it?

0

Do what you want. I am just trying to encourage people to get creative, yes. Take card that you think is interesting and build a deck around it. Or a card that is widely considered as crap. Something like that. It's not only more entertaining for everybody involved, you'll also learn a lot about deck construction, since you have to leave that dirt trail behind that so many others have already grinded to death.

At the very least, if you do that, I can guarantee you that I will comment and contribute :)

Use your imagination, like so;

*Cracks knuckles*

Metallurgeon = Sid
Mother of Runes = Andy's Mom
Darksteel Juggernaut = R.V.
Flamewright = Bucket of Toy Soldiers
Clockwork Beast = Rex
Walking Atlas = Mr. Spell
Clockwork Gnomes = Troll Doll

etc.

I also thought that after this I could do a video game deck, like:
Fiendslayer paladin: Samus
Fabled hero: Link
Akroan horse: Epona
Insert more here...
I'm still working on the idea... Oh well...
One thing at a time, I'll do the toy story first:-)
