Budget: Discard (Standard)

by Squeekems on 16 July 2013

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (15 cards)

Creatures (4)

Instants (7)

Enchantments (4)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

Only a true black magic user will understand how to read this spell book. Torment your opponents until they die from insanity, or until the rats grow hungry enough to devour the flesh of planeswalkers.

I have adapted this deck from my last discard deck. I am not happy with the changes.
http://www.mtgvault.com/squeekems/decks/discard-standard-v2/

I would like to focus more on the discard side of this deck, but it is difficult to keep the drops low in this block. For this deck, I am considering three-drops a high cost. Suggestions are always welcome.

How to Play

Duress to at least see what your opponent has for a plan if not to get card out of it.
Drop Pack Rats to begin building a rat army.
Use Drainpipe Vermin to combo with Altar's Reap and Dark Prophecy.
Altar's Reap and Dark Prophecy can also combo with Blood Scrivener to draw more effectively.
Extort with Thrull Parasite and Basilica Screecher to be able to use Underworld Connections.
Recycle your low drops with Elixir of Immortality.

Sideboard Staff of the Death Magus to help heal against hard hitting decks.
Sideboard Artificer's Hex to make equipments useless and potentially kill a big threat.
Sideboard Cremate to counter reanimating decks.
Sideboard Doom Blade to deal with big threats.

Murders are good. But doom blades are cheaper

I like Doomblade for the fact that is costs one less, and also because it cannot be redirected against me.

I would keep Murder, but from what I understand, it is not going to be in M14.

I'd be tempted to mainboard the staff. Tempted to sideboard Lilana's Reaver or another flyer.

All the good cards are gonna cycle out soon huh? Liliana's reaver is about the only new card would suggest but with nothing to make it unblockable its pretty useless. and mind rot is well, just not the greatest card.

I was looking at the Reaver thinking the same thing. And trying to combo with a four-drop is silly in my opinion.

I don't see much you can do yo make this better without adding in red for rakdos return to empty their hand so shrieking affliction can actually trigger.

yeah, monoblack discard has fallen short, dual color may be where you have to go

To stick with black, I could just use Mind Rot.

Unfortunately, though, that means I have a card that only combos with one other card AND it costs three mana.

I made a discard deck myself to have fun with the idea. However mine isn't standard and it is an Esper deck. I made it to experiment with the idea. For standard I recommend red black and maybe even white if the deck is having trouble handling the aggressive decks that bring a lot of damage in the early game but flounder mid and late game.

What about Black Cat and Ravenous Rats? I know you're probably avoiding them because they're rotating out but not until the end of September so there's plenty of time to play this deck. They would work great with Altar's Reap too. AND Ravenous Rats would make Pack Rat a little better. It looks about as good as it can be made in my opinion, if you don't want to step back into M13 or Innistrad Block.
Edit: Oh yeah, and Artificer's Hex is kinda useless right now. There're no good equipments anyway.

Oh I loved Black Cat, but its ninth life has ended with M13. The Ravenous Rats are losing their ravenousness.

If you see in the description, I link my current Discard deck. You should check it out. Should I change that one at all you think?

the old version of the deck had those, it worked much better then

But M13 and Innistrad aren't gone yet? Not til September.
Edit: Yeah that decks pretty good. I could see it surprising an unsuspecting FNM for the win haha

Typhoid Rats would bring you an additional rat and it would be a good blocker since it has deathtouch
otherwise Tragic Slip is always a sure bet in black -13/-13 instead of doomblade since you are likely going to sacrice a rat to block

I loved Tragic Slip. I am going to miss it in M14. Read the description to check out my current M13 Discard deck.

Slate Street Ruffian might do some work. It could force your opponent into some hard decisions.

I have learned with my previous Discard decks that he is quite useless.

Maybe if I used instant spells to boost his strength after blockers have been announced, but other than that, I can not just throw him into a discard deck.

Hey dude, love the deck. I've been trying out discard decks for a few weeks now and i've come to realise that a big problem of discard decks is that you have no instant discard cards to play during your apponent's turn. I think that i might have found a way around that. Please check my deck out http://www.mtgvault.com/dokaji/decks/poor-little-kitty-discard-deck/ and tell me what you think.
