Deck Description

I have always liked the creature type "specter" they are black (my favourite color in mtg) and they do fun stuff with your opponents hands. I've been trying to build this deck for a while now, but every time it has failed -- until this build. The Racks and Shrieking Affliction was inspired by my friend Pkmnfn, check out his decks as well!

The budget (red box) for this deck is $10

And this deck is MODERN!

Deck discussion for [Budget] Specterack

This is a great spin on the normal 8Rack strategy, and well-crafted for budget. This has a few more creatures than I've seen in some other builds, but the extra bodies and the flying really work well with the Racks. Good job!

Thank you!
I really like specters! :D

I would suggest Megrim and Dark Ritual. Both are really cheap and both help your deck tremendously. Liliana's Caress is better but a lot more expensive. Just some thoughts :)

I really like Megrrim, but the point is for them to have no hands, so it might not work as well. I'll add it to the sideboard.
Dark Ritual on the other hand is kinda expensive, and isn't Modern legal :(

good point on the dark ritual not being modern. didn't know that's what you were going for. As for megrim, the point is to hit them as they go down to no hand as well. Plus if they have a draw engine, then you won't be able to do as much damage with the rack and shrieking affliction, so it's backup damage.

Why not use Liliana's Specter? It costs three and makes all opponents discard. And Liliana's Caress as a switch out for Megrim, it does the same thing but costs one less mana.

If you wouldn't mind give http://www.mtgvault.com/knightofdisorder/decks/rule-of-liliana/ a look will you.

Liliana's Specter triggers only once, and all the other specters trigger every time they hit the opponent. Liliana's Caress is sadly, too expensive for this deck. A playset would cost around $6.25, which is 62% of my budget :(

I will look at your deck :)

Ah, yeah a budget... that kept me from using Cavern of Souls in my Vampire deck...

Looking at this brought back memories of when i started playing. my brother played his discard deck with a lot of specters like hippy. Great build though! Id run go for the throat or doom blades over the geths verdicts though so you get rid of the bigger threats

I was just thinking of adding some "destroy" effect to the deck :)
Thanks for looking and the recommendation! I love it when decks bring back memories :D

Id definitely add some. granted they'll be either they'll play something or discard it but with so few creatures you'll need more kill cards as well as something like surgical extraction to hit the playsets of things like boros reckoner and other pain in the ass cards.

But a single Surgical Extraction is half of my budget... :(
ugh cards costs too much money

Id send em to yiu if i had them for the sheer fact of nostalgia but i had no clue they were that expensive last i knew it was two bucks or so.

haha, don't worry about it. I appreciate your thought though!
They use to be cheaper... but many pro decks have them Sideboarded now... so the prices went up.

And extiripate was a lot cheaper too but its over 8 for one now. its insane howmuch prices jump i remember liliana of the veil dropped down to around 15 at one point next week over 50 cuz a few pros added it to the sideboard.

Lili of the veil is like over $100 now.... it's crazy

At tcg player its 70 for a non foil. its sad to say but the cards like liliana of the veil and playsets costing over 40 only the pro players can really afford them and it makes them even harder to find and get for us nonpro players but pulling one out of a pack and then we end up holding it til the price drops cuz we can't find enough for it its funny at times but the pris really set the prices

why is megrim not included?? (:
you could easily take out four one drops and play a playset of that or three and your mana curve would be just fine (:

1

It's not included because the point isn't really to make them discard, it's to cause them to have no hands.
Shimian specter also doesn't discard, but exiles.

wow this is evil! I like decks that can use a theme and run with it. I would feel powerless with no cards in my hand, and my life stretched with the racks!

I will! thank you! I am thinking of buying this deck, looks like I could get it for about 13 bucks online, which is about as much as a theme deck in a box these days, so I'd say its a good deal!

A Modern card that would fit and benefit from this wonderfully evil deck is 'Quest for the Nihil Stone' - it´s sorta cheap to boot. SGS lists it at 0.75 $ a pop. Having no cards in hand is just brutal. I like that you´ve found quite a few 'oldies-but-goodies' and even Modern Legal ! Kudos !
