Deck Description

Stompy deck. As in, AN ACTUAL STOMPY. Oh, and it stomps alright. I personally love this deck and am surprised that I forgot to add it until now. Stompy decks are big, ugly, but they aren't afraid to get dirty to get the job done...and they do. Just remember -- No foils. =] Let me know what you all think!

If any of you want Stompy explained, just ask...seriously it's embarrassing to see so many decks wrongly called stompy.

My other Stompy decks:

Deck discussion for Stomp'd

I love it, but again I warn you, the fetch lands are baaaad juju. Should probably side in an eldrazi in case of Mind Funeral.

Yeah, naturally. I actually haven't gotten around to making my sideboard for this and a few of my other decks. Any that are either empty or have a bunch of Cheatyface (which I do carry around in my deckbox) have unfinished sideboards.

I use Relentless Rats myself, though cheatyface is much more amusing.

Oh man, I'm beginning to think Khalni Hydra is a dark horse newcomer to the lovely world of Stompy. It's just such a sudden looming presence that your opponent is almost never prepared for. =]

what about sythe tiger instead of rouge elephant? -1 toughness but you get shroud

If it had "super-shroud" then I would in a heartbeat. However, since I also can't target it...not my preference. That said, some people probably wouldn't mind it, and it IS a stompy card =]

So, I'm new to deck names and stuff... What is "stompy" REALLY? :-)

Stompy means that you use mana to its perfect efficancy every turn. Wasted mana is "shameful". It's one of the reasons that stompy is so fast. Additionally, stompy is big and ugly for as low a cost as you can find. The modern day stompy staple creature is Leatherback Baloth. It has no abilities at all, but in my standard stompy it's on the field turn 2 as a 4/5. The first stompy staple was Rogue Elephant...a 3/3 for 1 green that made you sac. the land you used for it. As far as I know, this card is where stompy got its name. In a Simpsons episode, a "rogue elephant" named Stompy is terrorizing the town.

Stompy is obviously mono-green.

Stompy also almost never has anything that costs more that 4-5 mana. The exception to this is things that allow you to cheat them in, or VERY RARELY things that are like...6 mana but are very powerful in the deck. Again, this is rare and you need to be positive it's ok. Even then, only 2 of them could be allowed in. There's been some in the past, but the new best one in my opinion is Khalni Hydra.

Stompy usually has lots of crazy pumps. A stompy deck should be able to kill someone with it's "mana elf" if it wants to.

Stompy has some consequential card drawing. What this means is it forces the opponent to decide whether to get hit hard or give you card advantage. Old school stompy used Skull Clamp. Now that card is taken up by Infiltration Lens.

Now, to go back to the perfect mana effieciency thing. This doesn't just mean using every last bit of mana ever turn. It also means getting the most out of that mana. For example, in most cases a 2/2 or 2/3 for 3 is thought of as 1 or "1/2" wasted mana. Or a 1/1 for 2 is another 1 wasted mana.

So when you pay 3 mana for a 4/5 like Leatherback...well that's 3 mana "surplus" and none wasted.

Now, I've made the argument before (and am sort of making it again after seeing one dude's deck) that Naya (actual Naya, not just the colors associated.) could be loosely considered acceptable as Stompy despite being multicolored.

A prime example of this is Woolly Thoctar. He's essentially a backwards Leatherback Baloth.

Remember, this does not mean Naya is stompy. It simply means that some Naya-based decks could, in my opinion, be Stompy.

I have a stompy deck of sorts its called what a load of baloths it actually trys to creat as many creatures as possible and swamps my opponent with creatures but many aspects of it fit your description of stompy, I've been very concious of mana curve I use mana elves and few cards cost over 4 those that do have a way of giving me more than one creature and so present excellent value for there mana cost, check it out if you will !,
I must say I like this one scute mob is a personal favourite ,well done

Ok, so I'm new to the Stompy concept. Would Kalonian Behemoth be considered Stompy? 7 mana, granted, but a 9/9 with shroud.

0
Posted 17 December 2010 at 15:58

Yes, and no. Kalonian Behemoth is in a list of cards called "Fat-stompy". They're above the normal restrictions Stompy has on mana costs (max 4-5), but are undoubtedly Stompy in nature. These guys are sometimes still included in a Stompy if they work well enough and it's truly worth it to the player (but never more than 2 are added).

I have a deck called "Chunky", which is not really a stompy deck, but what I would make if "Fat-stomp" was a real Stompy sub-type.

Why have two Arbor Elves and two Llanowar Elves? is this a strategy i dont know about. cause I'd figure 4 Llanowars would be safer on the off chance you lose your forest's

It's a way to protect against certain types of removal, etc. Things like Memoricide, Extirpate, Maelstrom Pulse, etc.

Why do you use Nature's Claim over Naturalize I would think you want your opponent dead ASAP

4 life is nothing to Stompy. One extra mana efficiency as well as one turn faster artifact/enchantment hate is much more powerful than you might think.

@ mcphattus, I'll give it a look =]

I really love this deck. I basically stole it for my own. :) Although I'm not sure about the Rogue Elephants. I'm afraid it will slow the deck down too much and there's only 18 lands as it is. In mine I've put Kavu Predator because I play against a lot of white decks but I'm thinking of Elvish Herder for their awesome ability.

0

Unless you can do well with dropping a single land on your second turn, a 3/3 on turn one will give most people a heart attack. This guy doesn't just kill-swap with a Goblin Guide, it kills them! If you feel shakey about the 18 lands, then take out 2 of the 4 Overwhelming Stampedes and put in 2 more lands. Obviously, you need to be careful with Rogue Elephants, but once you get the "feel" for them, you'll see why this great deck style was named after them (sorta). Kavu Predator is an excellent Stompy creature, especially if lifegain is dominant in your meta. As for EH...I've heard arguments for and against him for use in Stompy. I think it really depends on the type of creatures you're running. With this deck...I don't really think he's needed. You have a TON of trample threat in this deck. =]

0
Posted 13 March 2011 at 22:17

Well I'm definitely getting three to go in mine. Taking out some Overwhelming Stampedes would be taking the icing off the stompy cake, hah. I think this deck works like a beast and I very rarely lose with it. The only decks I've had trouble with is black decks with Blood Seekers. Thanks for replying! :)
