Hyper Budget (Black)

by Sway on 04 November 2013

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (0 cards)

No sideboard found.

The owner of this deck hasn't added a sideboard, they probably should...

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

Decided to challenge myself; Build only decks that remain below $15, contain no rares, CMC 3 or below, no SB and could be used at a FNM with moderate success.

Here is the BLACK version, A couple of useful one drops, you could buff them or buff Slate Street Ruffian forcing your opponent into blocking/discarding. Some board control to buff your Wight.

How to Play

Pretty straightforward, as all the Hyper Budget Decks are; 1 Drops into 2 Drops/Buffs/Spells. This one is somewhat aggressive but can go longer by delaying your opponents board.

I'd recommend Grey Merchant. He is a 5drop, outside of your 3drop cap, but he's common and imo should be a solid fixture in any current mono-black deck. easily pulls you a 4-life swing on your opponent and gets you a 2/4.

I'd drop Devour Flesh for Far // Away
All you need is Away because of the Sac a creature and its 3 mana

Done and Done, I was worried about the incremental advantage that flesh could have provided for my opponent.

-4 Devour Flesh
+4 Far // Away

Happy to help
Feel free to check out my decks. In fact, I have a new mono-black deck that I'd like some feedback on:

you could also put in, like, 1 or 2 islands, just so you could randomly cast the "far" part too. Almost all black cards in the deck only require 1 black mana, so having 1-2 islands wouldn't hurt you, really. Even 3 or 4 might be ok, but that's going a bit far imo.

No offence, but the deck is called Hyper Budget: Black, not Hyper Budget: Dimir
I see the point of your comment, but by doing that is messing with the entire point of the deck

Instead, why not add geth's verdict. I do think it also is silly to have a blue/black card, when geth's verdict is equally good and makes them lose a life too. And I don't think it's an expensive card.

Hero's Downfall is the best removal in standard. Recommended over doom blade or ultimate price. I have a ton of removal in my standard Rock deck. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Hero's Downfall is too expensive for a sub $15 deck.

This is a budget deck and that card costs as much as this whole thing, unfortunately.

In that case then you have 0 protection against black multicoloured creatures
But I do see your point there, how about you use the sideboard for the more expensive cards and have it in the description for those who have money to spare

Execpt Far // Away, but what's the guarrantee that they'll sac that particular creature

or you just, you know, use intimidate creatures and walk around it. Having this deck go up against a non budget deck would be unfair to begin with, and I don't think a whole lot of budget decks will run multicolor black and then something else in perticular, at least not something that is too dangeous (given that it's budget).

Sideboard Dark Betrayal?

I would suggest Read the bones as it helps you dig for the things you need and being a common it fits with you restrictions. It's slightly worse than sing in blood, but gives you the option to look at 4 cards from you library, very few cards in standard allow you to do this, and even fewer given your restrictions.

I thought about this as well, I may consider cutting 2 Far // Away or Ultimate Price for 2 RTB. Gonna test and see how it plays out. Thanks for the suggestion!

I would definitely suggest Read the Bones but otherwise, nice deck. I like the turn 2 Tormented Hero/Dark Favor combo.

Love the fact that you make these budget decks, helps new players that don't want to invest too much in MTG but still wish to play it at least at a FNM. Great job, looking forward for other decks.

Another great, and rather cheap way to get into FNM is either Infect or Burn. They're cheaper than some of your typical Tournament decks. But Infect especially isn't for everyone.

Thanks, that is kind of my goal, I want players especially newer players to see deck building can be done with put the flashy rares. I know these decks won't win any Grand Prix or SCO; but if they help one new player see the VALUE of every card then I feel I have accomplished something. Nothing makes me smile more than hearing "Who even plays that card?" and then continuing onto victory or when someone looks at a card and has to read it an then says "Never seen that one before". Below are my Hyper Budget Decks for each color, all mono, working on 2 color and playstyle types.

Thrill-Kill Assassin
Scourgemark
Dead Reveler
. all of these should actually do well especially the thrill kill assassin. scourgemark doesnt give a huge power increase but the extra card could be the turning point in any game or just get thru those land clumps. deadreveler is just a fatty for 3. this would actually be fun with the amount of intimidate right now in standard to bad mono black is very popular.

Hey brother, good job utilizing Mogis' Marauder.
What do you think about Rakdos cackler instead of slate street ruffian. 3 cmc is pretty expensive for no evasion. Or i think grey merchant could seal the deal. Give you the last bit of reach to win.
Too bad no rares, dark prophecy is so cheap and could give this deck a boost, thrill kill assassin would do well as the 2 drop then.

Ok, I stuck to your parameters, no rares and only $13.50 midprice. I dont think this could beat a tier 1 esper, but for $13.50 I think this deck is decent.
Please check this out.

I agree about the SSRuffian, I think the TKAssissan would possibly be better just for speed purposes and will probably be getting him in there; lots of suggestions for this guy. Same for the Cackler, he would probably take the place of the Wight if I worked him into the deck. Unfortunatly Merchant blows the CMC parameter, but if I drop that He would defiantly be here, he is to stronk!

How about putting in Murder for Ultimate Price? It cost 1 more black to play, but it takes out any creature.. But the deck is really cool for a Hyper Budget deck. I would easy picked this deck if it was my first cheap deck. :)

Thanks for the kind words, If murder was Standard legal it would be in here for sure. Once I get a chance to review all the sets prior to the Innistrad block I may delve into the world of Budget Modern/Legacy. I played from about Weatherlight to 6th Edition and stopped until Innistrad so I missed alot and need to reacquaint myself to the sets I missed.

Infect came in there.....

I like this one a lot, but I would suggest a few changes:

-4 Ordeal of Erebos
-4 Swamp
-3 Rough Street Denizens

+4 Scourgemark (Keeps the engine going)
+4 Dimir Guildgate (For Phalanx)
+3 Returned Phalanx (Under costed, allows play into the mid-range)
