Deck Description

With each passing year Tortured Existence decks become less and less viable as the power level of the format steadily goes up and the ability of deckbuilders to build viable TE decks declines at a similar rate.

This dread return strategy (for running 4 stinkweed imps does not a dredge deck make) is equally as fragile to graveyard hate but more or less infinitely more resilient across every other axis.

The namesake card the deck relies on can be cast from the graveyard. The mana requirements are lower and less strict in terms of color. The deck can get away with casting 2 mana dorks for multiple turns without hindering its gameplan. There is no need to cram silver bullets, enablers, viable blockers, board clears, value cards, and engine components into 60 cards. The games go shorter giving the opponent less opportunity to blow you out with a Relic. The deck is much better equipped to answer a relic via Ancient Grudge.

TLDR: The deck is good. It blocks well, attacks well, and compared to other graveyard decks it is more resilient and faster both pre- and post-board.

I chose to run 15 lands, thus increasing the % of unkeepable hands by 1.9% to be able to run Crawling Infestation. I believe this to be a worthwhile tradeoff as the card furthers the deck's gameplan extremely well while also allowing us to put on pressure or block. It is likewise extremely useful after our graveyard gets blown up.

1 Gnaw and 1 Triton were also cut for 2 more Crawling Infestations. This is because they are the most commonly sideboarded out cards, at least in the current metagame.

How to Play

You mill yourself while getting on the board, being able to go wide before you cast Dread Return and go tall, quite possibly winning the game on the spot. In long grindy games it is quite useful to have a third of your lands be massive creatures so they very often go in your favor.

Sideboard:
Pyroblast for the obvious (also helps against Walls where you are otherwise too slow)
Ancient grudge for GY hate & the obvious.
Gnaw to the Bone against fast decks.
Flaring Pain for Prismatic Strands.
Reunion & Spellbomb for the obvious.
