Deck Description

Rakdos for Standard

RDW mixed with MBC = Cult of Personality

Im trying to make Rakdos a really scary competitor in standard right now where Azorius seems to be shining as per the usual. Anyone with a lot of experience in the format help me out. I've been out of standard for awhile now.

Basic Idea is to get the big man out turn 4 and drop in disciple and hopefully conscripts the next turn to put at least a 12 life difference between you and the opponent.

Sideboard contains all current considerations.

Hmmmmmm............... Seems cool, but unreliable. You seem to have too many 2-ofs, meaning you won't really have exactly what you want, when you want it :/

I'd recommend:

- Falkenrath Aristocrat (You don't have many humans here, seems like a waste)
- Disciple of Bolas (Just a personal vendetta there)
- Rix Maddi Guildmage (not really that good IMO)
- Hellrider (Depending on how many creatures you swing with, idk, I don't really play Rakdos)
- 1-2 Bonfire of the Damned (i know, It's amazing, but how often will you actually need it?)
+ 2 Vampire Nighthawk (fantastic card)
+ 2 Curse of Stalked Prey (A personal favourite of mine. the damage stacks up amazingly fast)
+ 1-2 Zealous Conscripts (Very cool card)
+ 1-2 Necropolis Regent (Again, an awesome card, but with rakdos, you might be able to get him out quite fast)
+ 2-3 Sign in Blood (Draw, nuff said)
+ 1-2 Olivia Voldaren (just a very useful card in general :)

As for the things your considering....
Lily & Mutilate - Both very cool in mono-black, but in a multi-coloured deck, can become unreliable, and often dead draws
Pithing Needle - Always a sideboard card, never bad
Ash Zealot - Could be good against flashback and certain golgari stuff, but not worth of a 4 IMO
Cavern of Souls - A very cools card indeed, but only if you have a tribal deck. By the looks of it, you could put it in for vampires?
Also...
Put 2 more dreadbores in SB (excellent removal)
Add some Tormod's Crypts (For those pesky golgari decks.....)

Hope it helps :D If you've got time, return the favor? http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=390504

I was thinking about getting rid of the Rix Maadi myself and cutting back on the Bonfire's because if you don't get them on miracle they aren't impressive anyway and dead in your hand most of the time. You're right about being unreliable. I haven't been able to pull what I want really so far. I wanted to find a spot for Olivia but decided to go with Chandra instead. That might be a bad decision, I haven't found out yet.

Hmmmm.... Chandra's Cool, but seems like a bit of a waste here, because her most useful ability (IMO, the spell copier) doesn't really do alot here. I'd swap her out for 2 olivias.

The thought was getting more bang for my buck with Rakdos's Return and Bonfire but the original plan was closer to RDW but I decided I really wanted to dedicate it to the big man himself because he has so much potential. I think she might be going but I'm not sold on what she will be swapped out for yet. Olivia is a strong contender though.

the problem bug me is...

too many things you want do which doesnt fixing a focus here...
this is between aggro or control... i dont understand why you put falkenrath aristocrat & olivia here, because they're anti-synergistic here for tempo,

i think you should focus on 1 route for bomb creatures here, between aristicrat(which would give a small impact here because the other creature cannot be her fodder), olivia (if you foing for some board control) or Rakdos(for fast paced aggro in case you can deal constant damage to your opponent)

my suggestion:

-remove essence harvest because it's very situational to get the optimal effect and doesnt help if you cannot get the big beaters on board

-either remove hellrider or zealous conscript, you can focus on different section

-disciple of bolas can be interesting decision but i believe between her and the keyrune wouldnt be valid in competitive deck for black/red unless you want a total control... especially i think disciple of bolas was a bad matchup for Rakdos & hellrider

Tomorrow is going to be the big test day. I haven't had a chance to test it out thoroughly yet to make decisions on what gets cut from here. I like versatility in my decks but at the same time I realize that sometimes it also takes away from its consistency. The Legend thing also makes me not want to put more than 2 of either of Olivia and Rakdos in. If I was going to cut anything it would probably be the aristocrat out of the three.

Hell Rider stays because he is Rakdos fuel. Automatic 1 damage for each attacking creature guarantees Rakdos can come out. I haven't been able to play with DoB enough to say whether it is good or not but the essence harvest so far has been lacking so you're right there.

I might take the EH and FA out tomorrow after testing for something in the sideboard section to see how it plays out but for now it is all test play pending.

ill be waiting for the result since im B/R player too and still considering to continue my B/R Zombie or changing the whole deck to more aggresive unleash deck...

i agree running hellrider was good for purely Rakdos Aggro, rather that than conscript

So the update is in to how it is working better. I played a lot of games against UW control where the only way I could win was to for lack of a better term, riot. BR had no way to deal with o-ring, detention sphere, etc. So what is my remedy? Be too aggressive to control. Throw out too many creatures. For that reason alone the disciple of bolas stays and sign in blood was put in mainboard. I also dropped the FA and added another Olivia and Rakdos for consistency.

Also the sideboard still isn't finished because I haven't tested it out thoroughly enough yet.
