Deck discussion for Mono Black Control

Don't think I have seen that much use from a Black Common...but everyone is playing Gray in mono black decks!!!

This deck does need some work...with the drawing and creature hate cards.

First, what does black (or your deck) have against artifact/enchantment cards your opponent's play?
Nothing.
And that blows.

Add 1 or 2 Nevinyrral's Disk

Second, why Victim of Night? It sucks in comparison to Geth's Verdict.
I might considering moving the Nights, and adding more Geth's Verdicts and Drown in Sorrow.

Same thing with Lose Hope...it sucks. Again, more Verdicts and Sorrows to replace them.

Third, why 1 Phyrexian Arena but 3 of the Underworld Connections?
Seems like that should be reversed. 3 Arenas...since they stack.

Has my like
+1, just needs some playtesting and a few tweaks.

In my experience the Gray worked very well as a finisher some times and if not it definately made a nice gap!

You're right about Nevinyrral's Disk, I just created the deck with what I had in my collection at this time, but I'm probably going to buy a couple of those.
Same goes for the Underworld Connections/Phyrexian arena situation, although being able to choose wheter to draw or not is useful sometimes.

I'll raise the verdict to 4x, and maybe some more Sorrows, but why the hate against the Victim of the Night? To me it seems like a pretty good direct removal compared to Doom Blade or even Smother.

Thanks for the comment and the tips!

good idea.
Try adding Painful Quandary, Dash Hopes, and Maybe Indulgent Tormentor.

Definitely shirk Lose Hope in exchange for Go for the Throat, Murder or Dismember. OR at least switch it for Stabbing Pain or disfigure. Or you could +1 your gatekeeper of malakir.<--- Love that card.

Lose hope is kinda nice for the scry, but I admit there's so much better stuff, even just disfigure.

Indulgent Tormentor is very nice, but it loses against Desecration imo.
I was thinking about Dash Hopes, maybe for sideboard material.
Painful quandary is kinda slow i think.

Thank you for the comment and the tips!

desecration demon is definitely nice, that's for sure. I just like being able to draw, especially in black.

Painful quandary is definitely too slow to have a playset of, but one or two adds a nice little kick in the pants. It's fantastic when your opponent is in top deck mode, which is really when you'd want to be playing it, anyways.

Dash hopes is unique because it's one of (maybe the only?) monoblack counter spells. and at BB it's pretty worthwhile.
Also it's a good way to take a nice chunk out of your opponent's life if they pay for it. It's like a two mana lava axe :D

Also I'm not a huge fan of Elixir of Immortality. It makes your deck more inconsistent. When you shuffle cards back into your deck you're lessening the chances of you getting cards that you need. It's probably better to find something that targets certain cards in the graveyard and returns them to your hand/deck, rather than the entire graveyard.
Elixir would be great if you're up against mill, but otherwise, not so much.

Mind taking a look at my deck?

Maybe you could remove two duress for for two despise? more variety in what you can take out of their hand.

Or, if you're not worried about budget, just switch all four for thoughtseize.

2 despise and 2 duress seems like a great idea, I'll test that
thoughtseize is a no, because it's kind of a budget deck

I feel yah, thoughtseize is super expensive. It's not worth the cash imo.

Not unless you plan on playing tourneys, at least

When it came out, everyone ran 4 of them. Now...even tourney decks...are only running 2 or 3 Thoughtseize.
