Deck discussion for Boros Burn Standard Theros

Too many tapped lands. That can really hurt your tempo.

This deck list got in the top 8 at an open a couple months ago. I had it on here for awhile just finally made it public for some reason.

It definitely seems like it has some issues. I'm surprised it got that far.

Why does this have issues? Like the reason this deck got top 8 is because it's really good... It's a burn deck. The only reason it uses any creatures at all is because they have haste and one of them is recursive. The reason it plays tap lands is because this deck needs to get a full compliment of 23 lands to make sure it draws enough to get to 5ish without missing a drop, but it never wants more than that. The most critical thing in this kind of burn deck is drawing a critical mass of burn spells (=20 damage). So the Scry 1 is actually more valuable than the tempo loss. Especially because what you do is drop the tap lands last, when you can make use of the earlier lands to burn the opponent without losing tempo, and you scry away other lands. It basically is the same as drawing another burn spell.

My current build is a pyromancer build with 24 burn spells in the main. I think I might drop a mountain for another scry land right now just because the scry is so good in a burn deck. I've noticed in playtesting that you can run out of gas fast with the deck unles you have a way to get lands off the top of your deck. Heck I've sided out basic mountains in matches before because I notice that I draw too many lands. Can't wait for the red/black scry to be printed however it is going to make it much easier for me to set up my side board. I might run 10 scry lands when it comes out.

I agree that there is too many tapped lands... the only reason i could possibly see why this would be necessary is for the scry ability, and maybe you should add Fanatic of Mogis, easy burn devotion and a good creature

I bow to far superior Magic experience, but I went with basic mountains and plains with 4 Wild Guess, lets you Scry 2 and draw 2 which hopefully weeds out those unnecessary lands even faster without slowing you down early.

I've seen a few of these deck now. Most run Young Pyromancer for obvious reasons. I'm really happy with this archetype's results against the monocolor decks.. but it has problems with esper and other lifegaind decks. The wild guess might be a good call be call but... simply put there are no cards in format to help this deck avoid stalling. In the end this deck is great, but has a weakness....

I liked the deck because I think it's a fun and unique deck for standard. Further, I think the sideboard options are pretty cool. Great post!

You could add Lightning Bolt instead of Shock

The title says standard.

A Guttersnipe would be useful, adds more burn for each burn spell... so like one shock+ 2 more damage is pretty nice
