Deck Description

Eighth of my casual decks. I'm posting them as they exist in their current form. All are, for the most part, inter-competitive, fun, and thematic.
I'm open to all suggestions. I don't care about legality, but themes are extremely important.

This deck shows exactly we need a ban list. Skullclamp is silly. Earthcraft is silly. This whole deck idea is silly. It regularly goes infinite on turn 3 with little to no effort. All you have to do is resolve a squirrel nest and earthcraft and go. It is that simple. The deck is designed to draw a boatload of cards if you can't get the combo off, or if you can't find your combo pieces.

And this is only an example of why Earthcraft is banned.

The deck stalls nicely with the lifegain from the elves, and if you end up against something that can't be easily moved, it has a touch of spot removal.

From a flavor point, I love the idea of a mage gaining knowledge by taking a torture instrument to hordes of squirrels and killing them. Too much fun.

How to Play

Parallel lives is there for infinite mana if you have squirrel nest and earthcraft out. Essence warden for stalling and infinite life.
Squirrel mob and Coat of Arms for Infinite Infinite/Infinite squirrels.

If you're new to the game, the combo works like this:
EXAMPLE GAME
T1-
forest, essence warden
T2-
forest, Earthcraft.
Tap Essence warden to untap a forest, tap said forest to cast chatter of the squirrel, tap said squirrel to untap a forest to tap and play skullclamp

The squirrel is not tapping to his own ability, and while he does NOT have haste, is being tapped as a cost of earthcraft. The 'summoning sickness' rule still applies, but the difference is that the squirrel is not tapping himself to either pay a cost or attack.

T3:
Forest, squirrel nest
Tap your squirrel in play to untap the enchanted forest
Tap enchanted forest to put squirrel in play
Tap new squirrel to untap enchanted forest
Repeat ad infinitum for infinite life.

Next turn, draw your deck with skullclamp, make infinite more squirrels. Get up and make cookies for Vikingincarnate, because you just won!

Deck discussion for G zomg. Earfkaft. Squirrels.

How about Doubling Season? Its essentially another Parallel lives for you.

There's no need for it. Parallel lives is just there for kicks and giggles, it rarely wins the game, and only sometimes helps. It will be one of the first things to be cut if I rebuild the deck. Doubling Season is more expensive, and I don't need the counters, just the tokens.

Usually, the mana of casting one of the doubling enchantments is better spent clamping the bejeezus out of whatever you already have on the field, or flashing back more squirrels.

Alright. Very sound reasoning. I don't normally play anything other than standard, so I don't know much about what would be good in this deck.

You should have already won before the time you cast your 4+ CMC cards.

Yup. Usually.
The reason that I've kept the more expensive cards is that when you can't win on turn 3, like say, the forest you're targeting with squirrel nest gets boomerang'd, the game will go on, and you likely will play out your hand very quickly. Earthcraft provides silly huge mana acceleration, so even dropping a 4 cmc + several 1cmc cards on turn 4 isn't really uncommon.

Rather than Boomerang, people run Disperse, Echoing Truth, or Chain of Vapor. I could see some sideboards including Wipe Away but very few would Cunning Wish for it but it would cost 6 mana so ideally you'd have a better chance of going off.

My Squirrel Nest deck is unlisted: http://www.mtgvault.com/chaoslord00/decks/vn-squirrel-nest/
I'm not proud of it but it's quite mean if you ask me. The sideboard has answers to Wipe Away users. ;)

As for what 4+ CMC cards to play, I'm a fan of deranged hermit in my build- if you have an earthcraft out but still need a squirrel nest, you get 5 bodies for 5 CMC so it's basically free, and with skullclamp you can draw 6 cards and leave up 2 chump blockers or something like that.
