Machine Head, and Doomsday Storm. Today was a good day.

How to Play

For your own sake, don't. This is the most stressful deck I've ever ran, and after less than a month of downtime, I've gone from playing this at tournament level, to idiocy.
It does more in one turn than most Vintage decks I've played.

Deck discussion for This is the end

how exactly are you supposed to win?

This is a Storm deck, but the most play intensive kind. I have a list of Doomsday piles I edit every now and then with the ones I use the most often, but it has been a while so I'm kind of learning how to play this deck all over again. >_>

Read the Storm ability on Tendrils of Agony, and realize that this deck casts a lot of spells. Nine spells before it shifts twenty life from them to me, eight before does eighteen, ect.
Doomsday lets me make five card stacks to win, either on spot in some situations, or after it comes back around in others. I ramp, I search, I win.

For an introduction to Storm, I suggest looking up any article/primer on Ad Nauseam Tendrils in either of the Eternal formats.

ok. Oh i see. I get it now. for every spell(including creatures?) before that turn, copy it, so they lose lots of life. I get it.

ack! no, not every spells played before that turn. every spell played before Tendrils but only in the turn tendrils is cast.

:P oh. Sorry, not very familiar with storm. And I didn't read the card very carefully. Haha too bad though right? XD

pretty odd looking ddft build. i would max out on top and probe as they are essential to drawing into your pile.

also Fow and counterspells, never really made sense to me in ddft. in menendian doomsday it makes sense, but there is so much anti-synergy with LED here, not to mention the rather anemic blue sources.. i just cant support it.

also no chain of vapor? chain is essential to reaching to lethal storm in many piles, and is extremely versatile in other cases as well.

as a matter of personal preference i play ideas unboud over meditate as it makes the mana requirements a little easier.

i actually havent played ddft with burning wish, which i know, seems insane.. i think im going to tweak my current brew slightly and try out some BW. it seems absurdly powerful..

whats your answer to counterbalance? i dont see the emmy/shelldock sideboard plan, and im not seeing abrupt decay or anything else either.

This is more than my Reanimator where my eccentric tendencies become penned down as decks. While it all seems rather counter-intuitive to how you would usually build DDFT, it's actually the result of almost the last three years of tinkering.
The Tops and Probe are at where they are because I found that a two:three split is how it best performs for me, a lot of people have their success with three:three mixes, or even more commonly full playsets, but for me this is the number.

If you can't tell, I'm a big fan of Menendian's writing, but yeah at this point of dilution it's almost pointless. I used to run a larger counter suite, and I think this one persists from a mix of paranoia and nostalgia.

Chain of Vapor is something I've never actually ran in DDFT maindeck believe it or not. It opens up piles yes, but not enough to really warrant me using it. The most use I got out of it was in a test game where I played with old remove from game rules vs exile, and I ran a playset of Chrome Mox. That was beyond insane.

Ideas Unbound is great, but when Meditate only has a single blue required and gets me another card, it's a toss-up. I went with Meditate because the fourth card makes a simple pile with SDT in place just a tad easier to proceed with. It truly does boil down to preference though.

Dude, play Burning Wish. With ten enablers vs eight, the deck is amazing, and that's half of why I get away with my split for SDT and Probes. Doooooo it.

My response to Counterbalance is that if I don't win before them, I'm going to still piss them off by making them sit there and flip over the top card of their deck repeatedly in game one. Game two against anything CounterTop-esque I board out FoW and co. for REB, Wear // Tear, and Chain. It's not optimal, but I'd rather not lose because they had a Wasteland in a meta full of the thing.

Also, if I was to run without counters I'd probably do something like...
MD
+1 Wear // Tear(From SB)
+1 Chain of Vapor(Also from SB)
+1 Cabal Therapy
+2 Lim-Dul's Vault
SB
+1 Burning Wish(Wishing for a Wish is serious business)
+1 Ideas Unbound so I have a shot at getting going from less every once and a while.

put this together to try out Bw in doomsday

http://www.mtgvault.com/alleywayjack/decks/legacy-doomsday/

im not 100 percent sold on emmy/ shelldock. like you said, wasteland is everywhere, and is almost definitely played in any deck running counter balance.. but the emmy/shelldock plan only takes up 2 slots in the board(pass the turn pile) and is good against enchantress(beats leyline of sanctity), and a few other decks.

im also not sure if i want to be playing dread of night.. its just so good at shutting down thalia, and mom. i havent played this at an actual event, but our local meta has a bunch of maverick, and a death and taxes build floating around.

I updated the how-to with a decent sized list of the basic piles i have been using. i think you might be interested in checking them out. seeing how easy and consistent your piles get with 16 cantrips and Ideas unbound might change your opinion on meditate a little bit ;D

I love playing against DDFT...not even because I can extract their stuff and make them cry, but because while they're working on that super-complicated and stressful play, I get to be that voice whispering in the back of their head saying "You're gonna mess up, you're doing it wrong. Go ahead, make a mistake!"

Also, Cabal Therapy gave me an idea.

It's even better when you smile at them. The easiest way to beat DDFT is getting in their head, and messing up the math XD Then it's either race, or pass the turn and watch them deck

That reminds me of another reason why I've come to love Dimir Charm...it royally screws with DDFT players. Also, my signature smiley face is there for a reason, I go by "Smiley" at my shop, and with some of my friends. You could say I even smile TOO much =]

Im new at the vault and i see that you guys are more than decent players.I have put out some BS decks but follow me and maybe we can all be friends to make a state of the art ultimate mtg deck ever.
Been following surewhynot and really like your concepts. Not to be too personal but i had a friend 15 years ago that commited suicide and tought me all about meta plus a whole lot more and he was really an over the top mtg player. So why my decks look like they do here is because theyre all a tribute and he made these decks so insanely competative those days but they actually suck now. Thats why the minotaurs and pestilence decks btw because i wanted to see if i could make them work better than 15 years ago but it seems that he just was ahead of his time when it comes to combos and logic. All i have learned is from him and i still learn to think like an insane person. Magic is half my life besides my kids so please do comment and annoy me with your tips and tricks. The decks i have put out is just for his memory so will make new ones from my insane way of thinking. All hail for your positive feedbacks to people who doesnt deserve it and hope in the future you can deak with my comments cause im here to stay!!!

I would love to see what you build! It's been a while since a new vaulter who tries to build something more than standard comes up, and even longer since one as polite as yourself.
And I'm sorry to hear about your friend, it's always a tragedy when somebody close leaves us behind. I'd be scarcely the person I am today if it wasn't for the passing of those I knew, through hardship we find ourselves more than in good times.

I just cant believe it.So much you guys have posted and so many decks you have made and still you answer people with respect and decency.I respect that so much and i think its so cool to look at your decks and actually have to think to see what the combo is. I have played for almost 20 years and have taken a 6 yr break but finally im concentrated enough to actually make an effort. When i started up again it was very much to get into with all the new explanations because i built a deck with browse(yeah real old school) and saw what i lacked in new cards so now its try and fail.Btw the browse deck actually kicked ass to some of the newer decks but in the long run it doesnt keep up.1st round kill isnt what im used to. Magic used to be fun and entertaining but now its much more competative.A lot to get used to i guess.Keep up the good work guys and ill post new decks and watch yours:-)
Btw you guys are what people looks up to and follows as muses so be well and prosper.
