Deck Description

Inspired by my casual all-lands deck, this deck focuses on pulling out Marit Lage (the offspring of the land Dark Depths) quickly and for low-cost (Vampire Hexmage is a fave). Once I have Marit Lage, I use Rancor on him (I'd use Beserk but I'm poor) and am left with a 22/20 indestructible black avatar with trample.

Deck discussion for Dark Depths

you can have 4 of them in the deck, but only one in play at a time...

also i wouldn't advice on copying either dark depts or merit lage with the vesuvans... they are both legendary and the original and the copy will both be send to the graveyard

Really? I thought you were only allowed one per deck...
Didn't think of Vesuva though. I'll take them out. Instead I probably need something to give Marit Lage trample if I'm just gonna have one... thanks for the advice.

Hi there Winters.

I have some advice for this deck. I think you are falling into the combo trap. You are so focused on winning with dark depth that it has become almost your only playable card. Also the combo itself is very vulnerable to both land and creature removal. (board wipes and remove from the game effects or just unsummon) If Marit Lage isn't out by turn 4 or is removed you will loose very quickly to most decks.

Not to worry because you can make this into a good deck but you need to be able to interact with your opponent more and give this deck a few more tricks.

I think you should load up on cards like Thoughtseize, Duress, and Inquisition of Kozilek. That way you can see what your opponent has and make him get rid of cards that are vital to him or that can threaten your own combo.

Packing your own threat removal and board control is a good idea too. Since you are running green/black Pernicious Deed is one of the best board wipe effects in the game. Maelstrom Pulse, Diabolic Edict, Smother, Innocent Blood and Go for the Throat are all good choices too.

I think Living Wish is a great card for this kind of deck, you can simply sideboard a Dark Depths and a Vampire hexmage to search for when you need them. Not only is it a super cheap search card but having a few combo pieces that are out of the game even protects you from surgical extraction type effects. It also lets you sideboard all kind of useful creatures and lands with powerful effects. Such as Phyrexian Metamorph, Bojuka Bog, Shriekmaw, Wasteland or ghost quarter, Yixlid Jailer, Faerie Macabre, Spike Feeder, Bone Shredder, Dosan the Falling Leaf, Spellskite, Viridian Shaman, Phyrexian Revoker, Entomber Exarch ... ect.

Run 1 or 2 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. That way you can tap Dark Depths for black mana and it will help mana fix your forests into dual lands. Verdant Catacombs is a good idea too.

Draw helps a lot for combo decks to help you search. Dark Confidant is the supreme draw card. You could also run things like Sensei's Divining Top or even Phyrexian Arena or Wall of Blossoms (some draw and some protection).

Lastly cards like Life from the Loam, Crucible of Worlds, Grim Discovery or Eternal Witness can help you recover combo pieces.

Hope some of that info helps and good luck with the deck!

Thanks, Mursh!
I took your advice (but tried to consider cost of some cards-this deck is already ridiculously out of my price range). I liked adding Duress and Innocent Blood as low-cost control and especially liked Living Wish as another means of getting Vampire Hexmage and Dark Depths out.
I also got rid of trying to turn Dark Depths into a creature for Fate Transfer (You were right- that was too much combo and I rarely have creatures to put the counters on anyways) which made plenty of room for your card suggestions. Thanks again for your help!

No problem, glad to help. I had just recently looked at some Junk Depths legacy decks so it was really fresh on my mind. This deck looks much nicer. With Berserk and dark depths this will be a costly deck. You could play rancor instead of berserk and maybe drop down to 2 or 3 instead of 4 and then put in your 4th duress or a Maelstrom pulse or 2 or even crop rotation. That would still save you like $180 unless you already have the berserk.

But this build looks really nice to me and really showcases dark depth well. Have fun!
