Deck Description

mono red deck based around kiln fiend + fling.
although it's a fairly common deck type, someone else did prompt me to build one of my own off of theirs.

I think tectonic edge may be good enough in standard to MD at least 2, and I should probably make room for 4 in the sideboard. Volcanic Strength is there to replace the boots against a red deck. I'm not really even sure about the boots, but they feel like a good counter to kor firewalker type creatures or large cheap walls.

Comments are always welcome!

Deck discussion for Kiln fiend - standard

You might consider Whispersilk Cloak, instead of the boots, since most of your strategy is based on attacking with Kiln Fiend. Creature removal could really mess you up.

I did, and you may be right. my problem was in the equip cost of 3 on the cloak. by the time I get a kiln fiend and the boots out and equip him I feel like the game is already decided. I may test it with either equipment and then neither and see what I like.

It does seem to me, that with that much fire, the game could very well be over. However, if you can resolve a cloak and a fiend, nothing short of a board wipe will kill it, unless they deal with the cloak first. Then, you can cast your fire freely, almost uncaring if it gets countered, since Kiln powers up with the cast, not the resolution of each instant and sorcery.

Yep, after some testing I decided that if all damage goes through I should normally kill on turns 4/5/6 depending on the draw...but if you don't win that quickly then the deck fizzles out...so a whispersilk cloak should keep the fiend hammering for the few turns it would take to move into middle game.

also, both the boots and the cloak are about equally lame for the front end and the cloak is much better for the middle game, so it may as well be the cloak ;)

Just had a badass draw, in order of draw
fling, fiend, staggershock, Lightning bolt, mountain, mountain, mountain
mountain
mountain
Lightning bolt
----------led to a turn four which went:
rebound staggershock from turn 3
lay 4th mountain
lightning bolt x 2
attack for 10 with kiln fiend
fling the fiend
----------that's 28 damage on turn 4(with only a mountain left in hand btw)
