Deck Description

Just a rough draft for a deck idea I had trying to get some use out of Gideon.

The basic Idea is a midrange deck and when Gideon comes down you can +1 him then next turn +0 to turn him into a creature and then sac him to devour flesh, combined with either Sanguine Blood or the Guildmage can result in quite a hefty life gain for you and a hefty life loss for your opponenet.

This obviously needs a lot of work and the sideboard is just cards I couldn't squeeze into the main deck but I feel I need more control to get into the midgame for the combo to work.

I also feel that I need a way to deal with Erebos as he would just screw the whole gameplan of this deck.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated :)

How to Play

Try to stall until turn five-six after which you should have Gideon down and either Blood or the Guildmage, turn Gideon into a creature and devour flesh him, this will trigger either the guildmage or Blood and result in a hefty life swing.

Ideal against mono-blue due to all the tokens they can spit out.

Deck discussion for B/W Lifegain

+1 like, its a nice deck
maybe you shoud tryout exquisite blood for the infinite combo with sanguine bond/vizkopa guidmage , blid obedience is very good too not only to slow down your oponent but to exort them

Thank you, love the infinite combo idea but that falls outwith standard legal which is a shame. Totally forgot about blind obedience having extort, do you think dropping a couple of pharikas cure them? Don't want to drop last breath as it's my only answer to Erebos at the moment.

yeah 2 seems ok, also there shoud be some clerics with good life gain (dunno if most of them are standard legal)

also try out Serra Ascendant / Vampire Nighthawk

Thats blind obedience added, should give me more time against aggro decks to get Gideon out.

All are also not standard legal :( if I take this theme to modern the deck can get crazy which is why I am trying to challenge myself and fit this into standard.

no archangel of thune? and how about a whip of erberos so you can make obzedat un killable also have a look at my orzhov mid range deck its not a life drain deck but still it could help with your sideboard http://www.mtgvault.com/blackbeltspaz/decks/gift-of-penance/

I like the concept, I think Gideon maybe needs to be cut down to like, a 1 of, and you should run Arch Angel of Thune in its place as a 1 of and then we need to figure out how to fit soldier of the pantheon in here because its very relevant in standard right now, card has pro ravnica block basically and also gains you life. I don't really like the obzedot's either, up your blood baron count, the cards just better. Plus you're gaining life in such rapid pace it'd really easy for you to turn on blood barons second ability. I think you just need to get a little quicker. My overall suggestions:
Cut:
2 Gideon
2 Obz
2 debt to deathless
4 last breath ( you don't want your opponent gaining life since you want to turn on blood baron, yes i realize you can use this on yourself but its not ideal)
1 guildmage
1 sanguin bond

and then id add
1 Archangel of Thune
4 Soldier of the pantheon
4 Precinct Captain
1 Elspeth
2 whip of erebos

I think you can also pop some Xathrid Necros in your sideboard to protect against verdict.

Thank you for the insight, I can see your point regarding making the deck quicker, I will take out Obz and the debts to make it quicker but I am very reluctant to lose the last breaths as the are at present my only way to deal with gods,

Celestial flare and devour flesh can do as well. If the players has to sacrifice it himself.

I am not sure how Last Breath would exile a God, it works on creatures with a power of two or less, Gods are much bigger than that, and that is assuming that it is a creature at the time. They're very dangerous even before they get the required devotion.
Remove last breath and add 1 celestial flare, 2 angelic edict (despite high CMC), and bring Banisher Priests up to 4 is my suggestion.

Damn! Never noticed the power 2 thing on last breath :( will remove it for some angelic edict and up the banisher priests to a full playset.

Whip of Erebos for the lifelink and the reanimate, you can bring back win conditions if they get removed quickly.

Yup given all the above advice the whip will definitely be in the maindeck

Same advice as others, Whip of Erebos for lifelink and bringing your dudes back for a turn, Archangel of Thune or Elspeth for another big drop, and I'd say maybe take out 2-3 land. 26 in a 60-card deck seems a bit much, but then again I usually run 21 in a 63-card deck, so I'm kind of stingy with how much I'll put in :P

Awesome idea, and you pulled it off really well!

Thank you :) The idea of the 26 land is that with the combo hitting at such a high CMC I couldn't afford to miss a land drop.

This deck is really creative. I've never heard of using Gideon as sacrifice fodder before. I feel like you could also try to pull off a more pure version of the strategy and run it as sort of a control deck with black removal etc., but I can see where you couldn't get quite enough damage out, and without blue; really effective total control can be tough. Really cool deck idea! I'd like to know how it does at FNMs or tournaments.

I am thinking of adding some control type cards to the sideboard, thoughtseize etc. I am hoping to buy/trade for most of this deck after Christmas. The only cards that are expensive are the Archangel and the Barons (neither of which I own) but I should be able to pick them up easily since their numbers are quite low.

Thank you for the complement, this will make a change from the G/B deck I am running and if I get the combo off even once I would be happy lol

Have made some changes to the sideboard, Pontiff and Obz are in for the Archangel and Barons until I can get my hands on them, Erebos comes in against opposing life-gain decks, Thoughtseize because.... welll its thoughtseize. Alive//Well will come in against aggro decks as one mana for a large gain in life should give me a buffer to get my combo played. Charm will come in also against aggro to deal with Stormbreath etc etc.

Any thoughts?

Some more tweaks, added Dying Wish to the mainboard (to enchant Gideon before I sac him to devour flesh) and added cartel aristocrat as a sac outlet (which I can mainboard in with the other two copies of Dying wish)
