Deck Description

Started off as a WB smallpox+Flagstones build that morphed into a creatureless control shell that plays unlike any deck i have ever seen. Win conditions are Sorin (who also helps mitigate life lost earlier and Arena life) or the RIP/helm combo.

The deck runs a slow game that focuses on controlling the board until Smokestacks hits where it can take over the game.

Early game should be focusing on limiting the opponent's hand. Hymn and Smallpox are keys here. Dropping smallpox with them having a creature out and you having flagstones creates a huge benefit for you. You have 9 permanent kill spells along with Deed to clear out the board. Once the opponent is in top-deck hero mode you can play with things like smokestack control or Infernal Tutoring out win conditions.

How to Play

Good Matchups:
D&T: You can play their game as well as them. Between Tabernacle, Smallpox+ Flagstones, and Vindicate, you can remove their lands and limit their ability to use port. The deck has a lot of sac effects for vs MoR and can ensnaring bridge to lock out equipped creatures.
Reanimator: Mainboard RIP, 4 more graveyard hate in sideboard, ability to remove big threats, Extirpate to deal with FoW if they do get griselbrand on board, and Ensnaring Bridge to deal with any fatty they drop. Nearly every spell in this deck is a problem to them except deeds and Decays that you can SB out.
Sneak and Show: Dropping Ensnaring Bridge off Show and Tell is hilarious. Most decks cant deal with it. Extirpate is again useful vs FoW and the ability to quickly remove Sneak Attack makes this a pretty easy matchup.
Maverick: You have all the cards here. You have tons of spot removal, Deed/smallpox vs their quick drop, Tabernacle to mitigate creatures, lack of creatures for their removal to be effective against (no seriously, Sorin's tokens get sent farming all the time), and Bridge to lock down the mid/late game.
BUG Delver: You have RIP vs goyf and Deathrite, Extirptae vs counterspells, removal everywhere, resiliency to match or beat theirs, and can draw the game into a later match where you can find a win con.

Mediocre Matchups:
Storm: You need Orim's Chant or Chalice in starting hand. You can Chant after their mana production chain to stop them cold before they can build up to storm count and Chalice set to 1 just breaks storm.

Elves:
While you run plagues in sideboard, Elves can come out so fast they can be hard to stop. The ability to combo or agro means you cant sit behind a bridge. Deeds / chant after glimpse / Tabernacle to mitigate cradle/ a good pulse can win you the game, but its always a tossup if you can do it fast enough.

Goblins: Its a race to see if you can control as effectively as they can aggro. This matchup is a lot of thought and actually a lot of fun. I have actually had games where i hymn myself to get down to below 2 card to shut off their attacks through bridge. Sideboard has a lot of good stuff here with plagues, lilly, and Chant coming in to slow them down. Normally a plague or deed finally will clear the board so that i can recover until a ringleader restarts the whole process again.

Bad Matchups:
RU delver / burn: Price of Progress kills you. Not much you can really do about it besides taking one and Extirpating it or Chalice set to 2 (though setting to 1 is often better). The planeswalker sideboard comes entirely in here to allow you to aggro and control their hand.

Sideboard:
Chalice is for vs RU Delver or straight burn (set to 1). Can also be sided in vs Storm.
Engineered Plague hits goblins and Elves hard. Most tribal decks rely on a lot of 1/1s.
RIP is for vs BUG delver and reanimator.
Extirpate is for VS FoW and Daze. Nothing like baiting out the FoW just to extirpate another out of their hand.
Chant is for vs storm. Drop it after their mana production spells and they cant continue their stom count due to lack of mana.
Elspeth is to re-orient the decks vs other control decks/Pox. It allows you to play a bit more aggro after you bait out a few counterspells.
Lily is there for vs very high resiliency decks. Vs maverick I found I had problems dealing with all the threats since they can drop so many good 1-2-3 drops. Lilly allows you to better control their hand consistently over the game and mitigate creatures. Also gives you another 'Lock' like smokestacks.

Deck discussion for Legacy BWG control

go +1 on abrupt decay. liliana of the veil and goyf would fit well. what is your win con?

-Sorin/Helm RIP are the win cons.
-Abrupt Decay doesn't hit everything i need and the deck runs the late game very often so i run 3. Vindicate/pulse is better in every situation except vs heavy control decks.
-Goyf is terrible here. RIP removes all of its effectiveness and smallpox kills it. Deeds will hit it as often as your opponent's board.
-Lilly is back and forth. Shes good, but her +1 is often detrimental to this deck's strategy. I often end up with more in hand then the opponent, so I'm discarding just to make her useful. Thats why shes in sideboard vs the matchups i need her.
