Deck discussion for Merfolk

Force of will is gonna work against you because your probably gonna have to exile a merfolk and you have 4 silvergill edept's in your deck XD

Force of Will is the 2nd most played card in legacy for a reason. It is completely necessary for the format. It should never be cut, especially in merfolk. Pitching a merfolk you have tons of copies of isn't that much of a down side compared to what powerful spells you can stop with Force.

listen to mursh he's got the idea….its not about cards... its about stopping your turn 123 plays. daze force and dismember all help for this. also….ALL merfolk legacy run 4 silver gill she is a beast that i sometimes copy with phantasmal just for 1 more drawn card..agressive power and card draw for 2???yes plz.plus no drawback with vial.

I am really liking the Chalice of the Void version of merfolk. It stops so many relevant spells in legacy that losing spell pierce hasn't been a big deal. Also as amazing as Aether Vial can be, I honestly haven't missed it as much as I initially thought I would. Merfolk doesn't have much of card advantage and or mana denial so it just doens't play vial as effectively as Death and Taxes or even Goblins. However you can still run Chalice and Vial without too much trouble if you rather.
Regardless of whether you put it in the main or the sideboard, Chailce of the Void plays really well with Merfolk and Cavern of Souls.

I also can't live without Umezawa's Jitte in either my main or sideboard. It give much needed spot removal and is just obscene on True-Name Nemesis.

Regardless this is a solid merfolk deck and should preform pretty well. If you are interested in my build here is a link:

Good luck with the deck!

ya im not completely sold on chalice i own them and i recognize its really good with all the bolts delvers and card draw in the 1 drop meta right now. i just think i would rather play more aggro than control so my turn 2 is a hard spot for me to decide what to play. thanks for the link i might match some of ur changes if u don't mind :). also you and me know that once true name hits the table…jitte is just the cherry on top.

True name does certainly just flat out win the game when he hits the boards most games, but I still like jitte. Its still very possible to get out raced by a flipped delver or 2 since they have likely already dealt damage a turn or two before True name has hit the board. Jitte also is great at shooting down trouble some V. Clique and can give me a chance vs Elves. Its even good at taking out Deathrite Shaman, Young Pyro, sometimes helps vs Stoneforge Mystic or can even kill tokens before they get equiped. Its a colorless source of -1/-1 effect that is just plan good against a lot of decks. It can also pump True-name Nemesis to a 7/5 or more with lords in play to help close out the game quicker than they can recover or find a Terminus, Golgari charm, councils judgement or other effect to deal with it. It can also pump and save True-Name from -1/-1 effects if you haven't been able to get a lord in play. There have also been a lot of games where True Name is stuck being my defense instead of my offense, like forced blocking a 6/7 Goyf for example.

I guess I am just trying to say you would be much better with a Jitte in the board than you are with a single stifle, it will do much more work for you.

I posted a bit more as a reply to your comment on my deck. Again this is a solid build and I have ran a more or less Identical build to get success in the past. Time will tell if Merfolk makes a come back in this form or a chalice form now that Treasure Cruise is banned.

Cheers!

Again nice points! I may have to steal jitte from that stone bitch for my folk after all! appreciate the knowledge. I always end up having to block at least 1 creature with tnn so some extra jitte action could help even if just 1 in the sideboard.

It looks like we have some fairly similar deck lists for Merfolk:

I went a slightly different route keeping 1 Jitte in the main (which is a local meta call to be honest)
