Deck Description

I've been piloting this for a while now in Standard, and I'd like to get it a little more exposure to see how the greater community feels about it.

It's seems to have a lot of solid match ups. It eats Aggro decks for breakfast and I feel pretty good about it's match up VS any type of Control deck. It does however pack a kind of bad match up VS Valakut since Valakut has that crazy ability to not interact with the other deck and suddenly explode to a sudden turn 5/6 win, and that's just a little too fast for my build considering it doesn't relay on creatures to get that damage in.

Deck discussion for Big Red Aggro-Control

have you considered pilgrim's eyes at all?

I have, but Pilgrim's Eye isn't really useful after it comes down. Sure, hitting that land drop is important, but aside from fetching me a land, he just sits there, waiting to chump block. My deck can pretty much get broken down into 3 parts: Mana Sources, Threats, and Removal. Pilgrim's Eye doesn't fit into any of those categories. And unlike Collar, it doesn't enable anything powerful to happen (such as Titan + Collar or Sparkmage + Collar or the semi-obscene Cyclops + Collar vs Aggro).

If I wanted to add Masticores into the list, then it might be more useful, but my 4-drop slot is a little tight.

Given this is a Mid-Range deck for Competitive play, I'd think my curve is about as low as I can go with out taking on more of an Aggro feel to it.

Interesting. The LGS I'm going to start FNMing at next friday (just going to draft tomm.) typically has 30+ players, most of which play top tier decks with all the top notch cards money can buy right now. How is the field where you play, and does this stand up to it?

Also, what's the strategy on the Chalice? I'm assuming you'd mostly go for 2 counters for Koth, Chandra, Titan, or Comet Storm...would you ever just do 1 counter or save up for 3?

I ran (have since moved away) in a meta that was pretty diverse. Lots of Red aggro, but usually 3 top tier UW Control lists, RUG Control, UB Control, WWQuest, BR Vampires, and the occasional Valakut / Pyromancer's Ascension. I consistently top 4'd every week. The only rough match ups seem to be VS Valakut (their clock is hard to match) and RUG (it's a very good list if you know how to play it). My last week there I took 1st, going 2-0 in all but the last round, where I lost my first game of the night (to a Rouge UBR Control list), but still finished 2-1 in that round.

90% of the time, Chalice goes down turn 2, for 1. That lets for a nice Ramp into turn 3 Koth / Cyclops / LoSP. Once I have that, any other Chalice can be made as big as I care to. I dropped a Chalice for 3 counters once, just to bait a Mana Leak (the guy said I seemed to want it too much).

I posted this particular deck here to help get it some exposure since it does have a good lay of the field (since UB Control is keeping Valakut / other Ramp Decks in check), and I'd like other people to see that. I took a weaker version of this deck to States and while I lost Round 1 to a GW Ramp deck, I went on to go 5-1 before I lost a round again (Beat some jank Ob Nixis Combo, Tempered Steel Aggro, Elves, RDW, UW Control). I next lost to another UW Deck due some pretty bad draws (strait land for 8 turns), then to my own stupidity VS Elves in round 8 (Won game 1, lost game 2 because I wrote down my list wrong, then lost game 3 because in game 1 all I saw from him was Vengevines, and he got a nutz hand).

I like the construct of this deck, heavy aggro, but its got red's thirst for blood, over using greens quick ability to amass a lot of creatures. Im not so sure how it would do in my area, only because theres many players that like to play UB Control or Mono-U/Mono-B Control/Aggro. Ive got a Standard legal burn deck that Ive been running that I think would do you some good to look over (as well as get me a comment or two of your own thoughts!)
