Deck Description

This deck was inspired by Paul Cheon and my love of Control and Grixis, he made a few versions of Grixis Cruel Control and I mashed them togethor then started changing things as necessary.

I've always loved really slow control decks that can counter or kill anything and my favourite colour combo has always been Grixis.

I have also been thinking of other Grixis Modern decks to try out, Splinter Twin, Delver, and Goryo's Vengeance. Control and Splinter Twin being the only decks I've actually tried and I have always loved control the most. If you have another idea for a Grixis deck let me know!

Deck discussion for Grixis Control (Modern)

i like mystical teachings but when you get the mana for it you may not be able to use what you search for, another thing is that you can't really search for your win cons.

It is just really good when u have nothing else to do and need an answer to something and the games are supposed to go long, I've definetly cast Teachings and then play that spell the same turn

I would put in another engineered explosives if not 2 more they are really good against zoo and others like merfolk. Great deck, most control decks I see have to much spot removal and not enough board wipers but you have a good amount ofwipes. :)

yeah, i think they should too, maybe take out devour flesh

I'll consider that. To be honest Devour Flesh has never really been great for me and probably only excels against Bogles but Engineered Explosives probably does the same thing if not more in that match up.

It's better cause if they have two or they have a bunch of enchantments on it then they don't gain a jackpot of life and they lose two bogles.

Maybe Torper Orb in SB for Splinter Twin

Meh, I can kill and counter there stuff, I can board in Rakdos Charm, Counterflux, Engineered Explosives, Teferi, Thoughtseize, etc. I got enough cards against Twin and I dont want to blank my Snapcaster Mages.

Oh yeah, rakdos charm! That would be so funny if you like made it to the the top 8 in pro tour then got to the finals and there was the last game and they were playing twin and they go off and whoever wins this wins pro tour then you play rakdos charm. :)

Playing Rakdos Charm against Twin is so sweet. Ive still never played Rakdos Charm to kill the Twin player but doing that would be living the dream :)

Also if I have atleast 2 mana open, the Twin player probably wont go for the combo, the most likely way to get them with Rakdos Charm is when they go for the combo and then u lose the counter war over the combo then they run out of counters and u still have 2 mana

Might I suggest Relic of Progenitus for your sideboard as a two of? Storm is becoming an increasing thorn in the side of all of my decks, and my solutions for most of my decks to answer it before it goes off too hard with Past in Flames is that card in particular. My Cruel Control in particular loves that card, so I thought I'd share the idea.

Rakdos Charm exiles there graveyard but Relic does do a better job, what would I take out for the Relics though?

I love Rakdos Charm as an answer to Splintertwins, but against storm it's quite weak, and relic has serious applications in the control matchup... So I suggest Damnationn and Sowing Salts out of the sideboard... I know, I know, they have serious applications, but usually when I sideboard for Zoo or Melira Pod where those are as useful as they are they do little to no work anyways, because they wind up being too situational. Truly your call here.

Personally I like Rakdos Charm better but you are right that Relic is better for graveyard hate and the control matchup. For now I like the Charm but I think I'll test maybe 1 Relic in the board for now.
Thanks for the feedback!

Only thing i would change is a land for one more ultimatum ;)

Still its a very good list and jace could help you with draw, but on my deck im still testing it, so cant really tell you if its a good add or not

I tried 3 Ultimatums, 3 is good for stringing togethor Ultimatums. Mystical Teachings is kind of my high-mana replacemnt for the 3rd Ultimatum, it has so much utility

I'm surprised to see you playing 3 Ultimatum. Most lists i see now have cut back to 1, some even run none! It's an amazing card no doubt, it's just not something you want to be drawing multiples of early in the game. How have you been liking Murderous Cut? What do you think about cutting that for Dig Through Time? Dig is pretty insane in control decks, and it's delve is pretty easily established.

Deck looks awesome though.

Yeah, 3 Cruels is too much, Murderous Cut is AMAZING, and yeah I think that Dig Through Time should definetly be in here, I haven't played this deck in a couple weeks because... Well... Control just isn't really good in Modern right now
