Deck Description

Standard version of a kiln fiend deck, i really like the build but it needs improvement.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Deck discussion for Nivix Fiend (standard)

Built a similar deck myself just a few days ago, and have been playing around with it. Has a few cheap creatures that react to spells and a few pump spells. Take a look and see if you have any good ideas :)

Immediate suggestion: Nivmagus elemental. Especially in fast-paced control decks, nivmagus elemental is a ridiculously good izzet card. Got me a few 4-turn wins at FNM's. I'd throw in 4 instead of the lobber crews.

I would also suggest mizzium mortars. Turn 2 it hits for one more than a lightning bolt. If the game goes on too long, it becomes so much more.

Check out dual-casting too. Granted, it'll be going out of standard soon, but it means you can copy a dragonshift for only one extra mana, copy a miz mortars on turn 3, and effectively double battle hymn.

Overall, I think there are a lot of things you can do to make this deck more aggressive early game. Swap in some lower cost spells, for one thing. While Cleaver Riot is a good card, it's a little expensive in this deck, I think. Even if you get it on turn 5, you're only swinging for 8 damage with the cyclops. I would take a look at Silent Departure for early game bouncing (bouncing is an underused strategy early game--wastes their mana and temporarily takes out blockers), Think Twice for obvious card draw, Searing Spear or Pillar of Flame for cheap direct damage just because, etc. etc. I also don't think battlehymn will work as well as you think it might. This isn't really a creature based deck, and I know you want to battlehymn into cleaver riot, but I think the deck would probably be more consistent if you didn't have to rely on them in combination. I think you can find better spells that can take their place more consistently.

I think this deck has some great combos and some great ideas. Just try to shave the curve down a little bit and you can make it 9x more aggressive than it already is. I'll keep stopping by to see what updates may come!

Thank you very much for checking out my deck and giving it that much thought. I agree and disagree witg a few things. Im gonna keep the battle hymns, they have proven to be extremely effective, i only need 3 creatures out for it to be beneficial which is very easily attainable especially with krenkos command. The cleaver riots may indeed cost too much, i was thinking about switching them out for that new fusion card that gives my creature +1+1 and double strike for 2 mana. The lobber crews actually do better than i thought they would, but 4 migjt be a little much, ill look into taking a few out if now all out fpr something better, nivmagnus elemental is good but i hate wasting spell effects.. ill think about it cause i own 2 tho. The mortars are nice, but only own 2 and they are in another deck and they are kinda hard to come across, but if i find more ill probably have a slot open for them. Silent departure is a thought... i might add a few, creatures have proven to be a problem, no real removal in this deck so good suggestion.. ill update the deck later on tonight or tomorrow.. thanks for your suggestions and thoughts :)

I would agree with the Nivmagus Elemental, they're really good, and can get quite bonkers. Plus if you Dragonshift it, it keeps the counters.
Plus if you're playing against control and your spell gets countered, you can just feed it to your Elemental

Alright made a few updates, what you all think? Looks like it might run pretty well this way, im glad i put in the silent departures, i will have to see have the nivmagus elementals do

It looks great. I can't currently think of anything I would change :) I'll be on the lookout for a cheaper replacement for cleaver riot as well--I'll comment when I see anything worthwhile.

Nice job and keep up the good deckbuilding!

Oh, and 2 Nivmagus' should probably be plenty. Like you said, they eat a lot of spells, and 4 would increase your chances of having to feed more than 1. 2 means you'll draw one probably 1 in 3 or 4 games, which is a good balance between that and the other strategies in your deck. Seriously though--if you're opponents playing a slow deck (or even a fast deck with little removal), don't be afraid to dump it all on the nivmagus. That thing can get ridiculous.

Thanks buddy! And i decided to throw in another nivmagus, just to see how that works, i kinda like his concept of just something to have the opponent worrying about

Its a bit slow for an Izzet deck. Kind of how my first Izzet deck looked.

Ill agree that something is still missing from it, i dont know what yet, but it actually does move faster thab you think it would, it actually can go off pretty quickly, i can hit the killing blow within 5 turns. But something still seems off about it when i played it, it did pretty well, but i know there are inprovements that can be made, i got caught in a conjurers closet acidic slime combo last night and they kept destroying my blue lands, haha i was about to drop 2 battle hymns into the overload of dragonshift with like 6 creatures out, but no blue lands made it impossible. But i like this concept i have, just need to perfect it, im trying to get some shocklands for it

Shocklands will absolutely make the curve better for you. Trying to brainstorm a good counter to the conjurer's closet... best I can think of is splash black for slaughter games or white for detention sphere or council of the absolute. I'll look into it some more.

Changed the deck up a little bit, what you think of the changes made?

Theres probably a good instant or sorcery i can put in for pursuit of flight, its just in there for right now til I find out what I'd want in it. its not a bad card either, either a 4/4 flying guttersnipe/goblin electromancer, a powerful flying nivmagus, or a powerful flying cyclops

I don't think there are any bases that pursuit of flight covers that artful dodge and madcap skills don't cover better.

Any suggestions of replacement? I would add more cyclonic rifts i just dont own any more sadly

Why not just madcap skills? You can toss it on the cyclops. Gives it a huge boost to hit and gives it slight evasion as well. Only issue is if it gets made into a target....

Mizzium skin should give me a little help with protecting him from a target, and thats not too bad an idea for the madcap, i was just wondering.if adding the enchant creatures will undermind the spell heavy theme ya know? Thats why i wasnt sure about the pursuit aura too

I don't think so. Madcap gives the cyclops the same boost that any other spell would, only it stays around. I'd use it.

Madcap skills is possibly the best card in Gatecrash.

I do have to agree, madcaps has proven to be a gamewinner in more situations than most every card in this ravnica set :p

I like the deck I have a simular deck that I made I while back then just added Nivix Cyclops. If I was you I may add one or two epic experients because if you got either Nivix Cyclops or Nivmagus Elemental out by that time in the game a X of 5 on epic experiment should win you the game. Here is my version if you like to see it.
