Deck Description

I tried to evade the Black and White color combination during Innistrad block since a few of my friends liked that color combo -- I like to have differentiated decks. Now that extort has come out, I was very curious to see how it plays out. Definitely a lot better in group games (Gained 40 life in one turn... killed everyone).

I taught my roommate to play magic. He created a very elegant gravecrawler deck after looking at basically every possible monoblack card. This resulted in a very powerful deck which dominated most of my own decks, and my friends. This Orzhov deck is partially a response to that. I wanted to see exactly how long I could delay his attack by not needing defenders, and just gaining life while pinging.

I also realized that the exquisite blood/Vizkopa guildmage combination would be silly to get off. I need a few more EBs. This deck is mostly what I own (I have the following cards that are still in consideration).

-another deathpact angel (though I might prefer some other avacyn block angels)
-2 more immortal servitudes.
-1 more gift of orzhova
-2 Holy Mantles.
-2 midnight recoveries (I also own unburial rites in other decks, which would only be efficient if I place more importance on big fatty creatures -- or need to salvage a vizkopa?)
--2 kingpin's pets -- they're just cute... but expensive.
- an alms beast.

I still need to look through my other standard cards and see if anything does the role of other cards in the deck more efficiently. Any thoughts on this?

How to Play

The idea of the deck is to get cheap extort creatures and enchantments out, and to capitalize on the fact that even if I pull a cheap spell late game, it will net me 3-4 or more extorts.

Turn 1: Either thrull or a guild gate.
Turn 2: Another thrull, a screecher, syndic, or blind obedience -- other two drops are OK here, but not ideal.
Turn 3: Begin major extorting on a secondary extort 2 drop like a screecher, or any other spell. If the opponent has many creatures, one of the thrulls can block, and either regenerate, or it can block for a smite activation -- giving another extort.

Beckon apparitions serve a dual role -- Cheapo spell for extortion, flying blocker, and graveyard removal. Biggest downside is requiring a card in the graveyard.

Deck discussion for Extorzhov

I was thinking of various directions to go in with this deck. One would be to add in a few more enchantments mainboard, and try a sphere of safety side of things.

One would be to boost the exquisite blood interaction.

Or to capitalize on lifelink more.

I love black white life gain as i have my own casual version of the deck. However for this type of deck i would try to focus all your cards on the extort mechanic and try to gain as much life as possible while draining theirs. I would remove the dutiful thrull and high priest of penance. I would add in 2 more syndic of tithes, 1 trull parasite, 1 obzedat ghost council and 2 treasury thrulls. I would also switch out 4 beckon apparition for the tragic slip so you can have some removal. Overall a very solid deck can't wait to see what else you come up with! :)

Thanks for the positive response!

Just played against my buddy's simic land-search, draw, instant deck today. For the first five or 6 games this deck decimated him. For the last couple, it went a little slower.

I 'boarded in smites hoping to kill something like wolfir silverheart, but his deck boosts creatures to insanely high levels of power and then makes them unblockable usually. His deck capitalizes on wild defiance, can make his critters hexproof with sheltering words and then gain loads of life. I was thinking that priest of penance is useful for bypassing that.

Exquisite blood worked really nicely.

I had cut two syndics in favor of blind obedience. I'll test it with 4 again. Kept 1 less mana in the deck and used a deathpact angel. Against slower decks this wasn't so bad. Against my other friend's zombie deck I was a turn or two slower than him.

I need another Obzedat. He was defffffinitely beastly.

EDIT: as soon as I pull another parasite it's going in. I like the dutiful thrill just as a turn 2 extort... maybe cathedral sancitifer or some other good 1 drop?
