it would be a sound strategy if not for the fact that X in a copied spell = 0 so if you cast two banefires and the second one is an unpaid for copy then you'll only burn them for the first one

Not quite. 706.9 "...A copy of a spell or ability copies both the characteristics of the spell or ability and all decisions made for it, including modes, targets, the value of X, and additional or alternative costs..."
also i would main board at least 3 banefires and take out the mirror of fate
I like the Mirror of Fate, as it will serve as a response to the inevitable removal of my win con's (Banefire and Jace); whether they are exiled or not, I'll be able to grab at least the one Banefire from the sideboard. But I think I agree with a third Banefire in the main: -1 Mindbreak Trap, +1 Banefire.
