Deck Description

American control deck (budget) for FNM.
Control the board early turns with mizzium mortars and magma jet.
supreme verdict the middle game turns while drawing cards with divination or azorius charm.
One aetherling hits the board, it's pretty much game.
The deck does alright in testing, but not great.
Please critique my deck. What should I add/remove?

Deck discussion for American Control FNM

A friend of mine runs a deck very similar to this and it works great! I do not, however, have any really good suggestions that would not set you back some dough. My only thought here that is budget is to maybe toss in some boros charms instead of magma jet and you should probably drop divination of opportunity. If you can scrape together about $15 I would consider of grabbing at least a pair of Jace Memory Adept and a pair of prognostic sphinx. That would be a strong win con to back up Aetherling (if it gets a pithing needle or a slaughter games you're toast). Assemble the legions is another good bomb, but it too will cost a few dollars to grab (~$3 apiece or so).

Thank you for your feedback.
I'm not sure about boros charm as I do not have many relevant permanents I want to make indestructible.
I've considered opportunity but it's cost scares me. I could try running one or two main deck though.
I already have a memory adept, I could try him out, his 0 ability is great.
I'm also trying to grab a pair of assemble the legion, I love that card and it would be another great win con.
I agree that this deck is too dependent on getting aetherling on the field, if I don't get him I don't have another way to win.
What about gideon, champion of justice? He could be a game finisher as well.
Thanks again for your feedback.

Gideon has some possibilities, but I haven't had a chance to see him in action. Since your playing control opportunity really isn't as bad as it looks. You van just keep all the mana free and then cast it if you still have the mana available on their end step. Its like drawing five cards for your turn! Boris Charm is great. Not only does it save permenants, but it also smacks them or a planeswalker up side the head for 4 damage or gives an 8/1 aetherling double strike. It really is hard to beat. It can also fish out removal if you don't leave any blue mana up yo flicker aetherling.

I added assemble the legion as another win-con and 2 opportunity for more card drawing. Lets see how that works. I still have a feeling the deck is too dependent on aetherling to win. Gideon might help, but that really depends on the amount of counters he has (the amount of creatures my opponent has). Which normally aren't that many.
As for memory adept, isn't he a bit out of the deck flavor? He is more a mill card than a card that helps me control the board.

Its a good bomb against other control. Especially sphinx revalation decks that draw huge numbers of cards.

So maybe memory adept will be more of a side card. Psychic spiral might also be handy there. But the meta is more aggro decks imo.

Right now...yeah. I wouldn't bother with psychic spiral.

He's an extra blocker. Always handy in the current meta.
How does steam augury work for you?

Honestly when I first put it in the deck I didn't think I was going to like it but after playing it a few times I really realized how useful it is. You always want to use it at the end of your opponents turn and for the most part within the 5 cards I draw there's at least two useful ones. You just have to get used to separating them so that no matter which pile gets picked its in your favor, or in a way that tricks your opponent into giving you the cards you actually want. Its really up to the individual if they like it though since it is a game of chance. I do suggest trying it though =]
