Opening Gates

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (15 cards)

Creatures (3)

Sorceries (1)

Instants (7)

Artifacts (4)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

The aim of the game is to survive as long as possible until you have 9 gates plus an untapped Maze's end on the battlefield with 3 mana open to cast it's ability to win the game.

Although I do not have a fixed budget for this deck, I would like to keep it as low as possible.

How to Play

For a sideboard I have added:
x3 Meteor golem's that can be substituted for decks with annoying cards such as blood moon, which would otherwise completely destroy our gameplan.

x4 Ancient Grudge against artifact's it is a very competitive for it's price-tag, I am not sure however if 4 copies of it may be a little overboard.

x4 Nihil Spellbomb for decks with graveyard interaction, which I have substituted for Cranial Archive due to its much greater effectiveness and speed, however slightly worse for budget and sometimes not being able to draw you a card and cycle. Ideally you would add Relic of Progenitus in a non-budget decklist.

x1 Anger of the God's (for now) It just seems like a best in slot card in a sideboard, it may be a little difficult to cast in some situations. However it is also $2.80 each.

x3 Silence Just to slow your opponent down, however if their hand is full of instant speed cards it is completely useless. It is also mediumly budgeted at $1.51.

(I am also debating adding another guild summit or two against discard to the sideboard)
A big weakness for this deck is land destruction and strip mine effects, also mill. Although we have 11 types of gates in the deck 4 of those gates are singletons so if two of them were to be destroyed, there would be no way to win. So I am looking for a "Spiritual Asylum" type card in modern if one exists. I think life from the loam is also too expensive in terms of budget to put in the sideboard, but that would also be a consideration for non-budget iteration's of this deck.

The sideboard is far from perfect, any suggestions to do with it or the main-deck are welcome.

Deck discussion for Opening Gates

I like the concept...my only question is do you ever run into a situation playing where you are slow on the mana since all of the gates come into play tapped?

Yes that would be the case a lot of the time being one turn behind, I could replace a couple of the guildgates for a couple of more "Plaza of Harmony"'s to solve this problem. *edit -1 Rakdos Guildgate -1 Orzhov Guildgate +2 Plaza of Harmony

I wonder, would you consider trying to fit amulet of Vigor in here? It would help the slow nature of gates. And possibly sideboard something like spine of ish-sa or meteor golem for blood moon hate?

I would say I prefer Meteor Golem over spine of Ish-sah, since there is not a way of sacrificing or bouncing spine, and you get a 3/3 body, plus it's slightly better for budget.
As for Amulet of Vigor I was edging towards not putting it in the deck due to me thinking it would not get enough value (especially in the late game) after I saw it's $24.32 price tag, it's way to expensive for this list, but in a non budget list you might add it along with "Azusa, Lost but seeking", or "Oracle of Mul-daya" (type card).

I found a card called Skyshroud ranger, it works brilliantly with Maze's End also added a sideboard (far from tuned).

Ah. Missed the budget tag. Fair enough.

Might I suggest Sakura-tribe Scout instead of skyshroud ranger? It is the same card, but isn't limited to being used only when you could play a sorcery. Or Llanowar scout. 2 mana, but a 1/3. Again not limited to being a sorcery. Also slightly cheaper.

Sakura-Tribe scout is unfortunately $2.35 each, and in the interest of being 1 mana cheaper and better curve-wise and most of the time being able to play it a turn early (although worse stats, and unable to block most of the time because of the sorcery tag), you could make an argument for each.

Also I am not sure of the value of instant speed land dropping, I guess if an opponent is about to remove it, it can tap and squeeze out another land drop if there is one in hand.

I also tested a couple of games with this deck, I won 2 and lost 2 (won against really jank decks, one of them running double lava axe, just gaining life won me the game) one loss was against mono black devotion due to me not being able to destroy Phyrexian Obliterator without dealing damage to it, I had x2 Fiery justice in hand but did not want to sac 4 gates and a creature.
Another loss was against Vannifar (the new birthing pod) into a one turn kill combo featuring Pestermite and kiki-jiki, even though I did not stand much of a chance I think a card like Dismember would really help, even if it is a bit pricey for this list.

I think this is good deck, but add card with can play an addition gate each turn, like Wayward Swordtooth

I did consider adding Wayward Swordtooth, however it is too expensive for this budget at $4.68. I do have "Skyshroud Ranger" which effectively does the same thing.
