The official Gatherer site covers the current card errata and oracle text... http://gatherer.wizards.com
The official Magic website covers the formats and current rules... http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Default.aspx
The two main "limited" formats are sealed and draft. Sealed is 6 booster packs that you build a 40+ card deck around. Draft is three booster packs per person in an 8 man circle that you open one, take a card and pass then build a 40+ card deck around the cards you drafted.
The main constructed formats are Standard, Modern, Legacy and Vintage
Legacy and Vintage are the formats where your older cards will be legal (with different banned lists). Modern being 8th edition forward and standard being the two last current blocks plus core set.
Also check out the EDH/Commander format if you're not looking to get too competetive and just want to play with your older cards.

If you're lucky enough to find a group that does cubedraft you might want to look into that format as well. It's the same as normal draft but you create piles of randomly picked cards picked from the cube (a large selection of cards, usually singleton chosen by the creator of the cube for the purpose of drafting) instead of boosters. This is an awesome format, it traines your deckbuilding and drafting skills, it's always different and refreshing, its highly competitive, its free once you have your cube, it's well balanced (if you created a good cube) you control what is in the cube so you should always have interesting draft sessions etc...
Draft and Commander are both great formats to get into or back into magic.

Pauper and Peasant are also great formats to get "reintroduced" to MTG without breaking the bank. They can be very competitive but wont cost you an arm and a leg.
