Deck Description

I have a feeling I should be heading into modern now because of the many things you can do with it. Can I ask you a question? Which do you think is better: Standard, or Modern? Modern seems like you can do a whole lot more but at the cost of the format being much faster. Standard seems like it's a way to play with the most recent cards, but even that has it's moments like Stormbreath Dragon being annoying or something like that.

Anyway, this is a deck I made online on tappedout.net (you can find me as the same name here, but I really don't have a lot of decks posted). The deck works great, hopefully when you're not against a deck that tries to combo on you on turn 4 (That's why Duress and Distress are here. I tried to make the deck significantly cheaper so no Thoughtseize).

This is basically a R/B/W Control deck that's meant to take all your opponent's creatures, gain a little life, and gain some advantage.

How to Play

There's a reason why the deck is named, "Death by Lingering Souls": It just so happens to be your win condition once you've taken care of everything your opponent has. Dragon Roost is also a decent enchantment when the Spirits are down and you need a plan B.

So then how do you get rid of your opponent's creatures? Simple, you have the best removal it has to offer in terms of Lightning Helix, Dismember, Dreadbore, Terminate, Day of Judgment, and Intimidation Bolt (which can also stop attacks so very nice!). Your planeswalkers, Sorin, Ajani, and Elspeth can also help defend a little bit in the forms of tokens or tapping down creatures.

Manabase wise I do realize that there's the Zendikar lands that absolutely perfect mana, but I'd rather stick with the old shock m10 lands method of mana (Besides, did you look at Scalding Tarn? 90 dollars? Is that even WORTH IT!?!? for ONE even!?)

Sideboard, we have Duress and Distress (already explained) since in modern I realize you need disruption. Lightning Bolts are for Delvers since they still exist (I do realize there's Gut Shot which can require no mana to use, but with Lightning Bolt it has plenty more viability against what I need to do especially against the really super-aggresive decks out there in modern). Oblivion Ring is permanent removal and Rest in Peace is Graveyard Removal (despite the fact that Lingering Souls is your Win condition but you have Dragon Roost to use so I assume it's fine).

That is all, have a fine day today! :D
