suspended training

by Kazzong on 15 August 2017

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (19 cards)

Sorceries (4)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

pili pala infinite mana deck, with a few silly suspend cards as the finishers.
can win on turn three fairly consistently

was thinking of swapping Serum Visions for Opt.
(hence the extra sideboard cards.)

How to Play

you want to put out training grounds, pili-pala, and your choice of paradise mantle, karametra's favor, or cryptolith rite.

this allows you to tap pili-pala, add a mana, and untap pili-pala to add a mana to your mana pool (think something like mana cylix, but untapping instead of tapping) and do it over again as many times as you want.
each time you do nets you a mana of your color choice.

your targets for infinite mana are: benalish commander or roiling horror.
each time counter that comes off of them gets you either a creature or a life drained from your opponent.

Rift elemental allows you to pull all time counters off your finisher in one go and get an insane number of creatures and most likely kill next turn, or drain for all life right away.

Rift elemental can also be a finisher in it's own right. but is strictly dependent on you having a suspended card, which should simply win the game at that point.

and finally you can deck your opponent with BSZ, or draw a few cards if you are desperate enough.

Deck discussion for suspended training

I like the concept of this. and it looks to be a turn three win consistently.
very well made. looks fun to play

I'm actually really glad that there are other options for turn two plays that work so well with the untap infinite combos. While pili-pala can have all its key pieces out turn two, it's still not able to activate until three, but that's fine honestly. Gilder bairn can also be ready to go turn three, but it requires a mana dork to pull it off.

I love the combos being used too, because of the fact that training grounds affects suspend as well. Overall its one if the two best infinite combos in magic that I just love to see and use

lol... I suppose if you played elvish spirit guide or lotus petal you could play concordant crossroads on turn one or two, allowing pili-pala to go off turn two. which I think would be a little silly. and not modern legal.

grand architect also goes infinite with pili pala might be worth adding

If he decides to add it though then what would he sub out? It'd have to be one of the mana enablers to be a fair trade-off, but that would raise the decks average mana cost, which isn't optional at all. I think the deck would be better without it honestly

@ johnnycombo
interesting, but perhaps a mite slower than I might like for this. also... not sure what I would take out for it. perhaps Benalish commander? but really don't know how I would feel about taking out a win condition.

@drakeraenes
yeah, not sure I would feel good removing a mana enabler for this at 3 mana. if it were two or one... that might be a different story.

I freaking love this. I have a few deck designs that make use of pili pala but none that do it quite as efficiently as this. Very very happy to see blue sun zenith and cryptolith rite getting some use in a deck this solid.

And it's modern legal. Definetly liking this

Just asking to make sure I have the infinite combo correct in my head.

Need to have Training Grounds and Pili-Pala on the board, along with 2 of the 3 creature mana fixes; i.e. Karametra's Favor, Paradise Mantle, or Cryptolith Rite?

Meaning if my board sits as: Training Grounds, Pili-Pala, 2x Paradise Mantle; I can tap Pili-Pala for 2 mana, recycle it back to Pili-Pala, leaving 1mana floating, then rewash. Feed the leftovers back to Benalish Commander, Roiling Horror, Rift Elemental, or Blue Sun's Zenith.

Setting this up to take to my weekly game night. Trying to make sure I can pilot this deck correctly before it hits the table. Thanks for the great deck, and I appreciate any helpful tips I get on playing this deck.

Negative, but close. You don't need two mana fixers, only one. You tap pili-pala with a free tap effect to get one mana from one of the three sources (rite, mantle, or favor), then use that mana to untap it with its untap ability using the reduced cost of one courtesy of training grounds. This nets you one floating mana, and an untapped dork. Simply repeat ad infinitum to generate infinite mana of any color(s) you desire.

@ Drakeraenes
thanks for the explanation. I had not seen the comment yet.

@Dazewon
thank you for your interest in my deck. please let me know how it performs.

as for tips... I would say that roiling horror and BSZ are better win conditions than Benalish Commander. other than that... not sure what advice I could give. hope you enjoy the deck. :)

Why the heck is training grounds so expensive now. Man

No idea. I hope it goes back down. I want to build this deck. That being said, it is really the only expensive card in the deck. Which is nice. Everything else is pretty budget friendly.

I might have four copies of it I will have to dig through stuff next weekend and see. If I do I will probably forgo my saproling build for this one for right now.

Have you considered Fascination instead of BSZ. Suddenly you run turn 3 mill deck :-p
Love the deck, like a lot.
I would probably swap two overwhelming denials out for something else, like a bounce effect of some kind (into the roil perhaps)
+1 from me bud.

well honestly I can already mill out turn three with BSZ, as it can force your opponent to draw as well. the problem with Fascination is that ALL players draw or mill at once, so I would end up milling myself out at the same time.

truth be told I could use RSZ as a finisher, but I like roiling horror a little better simply because of the nature of the deck and as an ability it is harder to counter.

I am certainly weak to removal, so more protection there would be good, which is why I have Overwhelming Denial. I can usually afford the extra mana for it and it also can't be countered. I could run something to give hexproof instead, or indestructible, or something to bounce, but I think sideboard would be a better option for cards like that because they are kind of dead if my opponent isn't running removal. might run apostle's blessing instead.

all that being said, thanks for the like and the comments. :)

I get ya, I'm used to 3/4 player games so all player mill is usually better, I like to kill everyone at once. BSZ is neat but the option to mill especially if you go up against a graveyard shenanigans deck can be useful.
In terms of protection I would of thought there were much better counters than a 4 drop. have you considered pact of negation as well. if you have infinite mana then paying 4 next turn won't hurt. I considered bounce like Into the roil because it stops things like pithing needle, or only cast 1 spell a turn or the like.

while I do agree that it is usually better to mill multiple people at once instead of just one, I don't care for milling myself and relying on my opponents already having less cards than me when using something like Fascination.

the only exceptions I would say are: I am using a designated mill deck and I know my opponents will have less cards in their library than I do, have a way to return the cards I mill from myself (elixir of immortality etc), or have a graveyard based deck where I benefit from milling myself (dredge etc).

that being said Pithing needle (and sorcerous spyglass when Ixalan drops) could certainly be an issue if they named rift elemental. so artifact hate and/or counter cards would be good. perhaps smelt, oxidize. nature's claim or natural state.

Alternatively, you could stick in a couple of fireballs and just blow the hell out of the opponent rather than the suspend stuff?

Comet Storm

comet storm is nice as it is instant speed, perhaps pyromatics might be interesting here as well, as it won't fizzle to a single counter spell.

That's a good thing about time counters. until the last one is removed the spell isn't cast. it is an ability, so they can't count you except with disallow

Is there any chance of a full 15 card sideboard?
I might suggest some land hate and some dismembers

Yeah, feel free to use whatever fits your local meta. I don't know exactly what is good sideboard tech for you, based on what your group plays. I usually play pretty casual so I don't run a sideboard for most decks.
