This deck focuses on amassing and utilizing large amounts of black mana. This mana is spend on spells that either use it to grow stronger or to deal crippling blows to the opponent. Your creatures provide either a means for increasing the mana you can produce or, in terms of the shades, an outlet for dumping your mana. In addition to Nirkana Revenant and Crypt Ghast, the land Cabal Stronghold is another option to increase your land base. Use Thespian's Stage to increase the number of your strongholds. Exsanguinate, Consume Spirit, and Corrupt allow you to drain large chunks of your opponents life while healing yourself the same amount. This becomes deadly when combined with a lot of black mana. Temporal Extortion and Dash Hopes provide convenience methods for reducing your opponents life or giving yourself and added bonus. Finally, this deck utilizes the planeswalker, Liliana of the Dark Realms. Liliana's first ability allows you to have a swamp on hand to play every term. Her second ability provides a means to either boost up a creature considerably or destroy most a threatening creature an opponent controls. Her final ability is extremely powerful in this deck. That ability allows you to increase the amount of mana from swamps by a multiple of four. If you have six lands, cards like Consume Spirit jump from dealing four damage to a fatal twenty-two damage.
