I was always partial to Rakdos and R/B decks. However from the looks of the spoilers. Golgari and G/B is where it's going to be at.

I already have a standard R/B deck constructed that works pretty well. So chances are I'll just edit that deck with the new Rakdos cards. I think my wife will be building G/B.

What do you think of the new Jace?

Nahh. Golgari wilk be to fragile to be a top deck. No offense or anything, but all people have to do is side in tormods crypt or a graf diggers cage. If u can getbpast that golgari will be good. I forsee azorius to be thee best. A U/W aggro control. GoST and Snapcaster, then some detaining creatures, and the rest to shut down every other portion of the enemy deck. Like seriously azorious has an answer for every other guild and can easily shut them down. But thats just my opinion. :p tge othrr guilds are really good to.

Naturalize, Crushing Vines, Acidic Slime, and things of that sort should take care of that problem.

None of those can answer Tormod's Crypt. Just sac in response, and Naturalize can't be done in response to Tormod's Crypt either.

gound seal answers crypt. and the only other guild running green is Selesny that you will have to worry about your ground seal being naturalized.

...So, back when we had surgical extraction, you could have made that argument, as well, yet zombies is still putting up the results. S.E. was better than crypt for these purposes, and zombies is still tier 1 currently (with S.E. legal). If you think B/G isn't going to be tier, you're horrifically mistaken. Go ahead, answer their graveyard- you've still got to deal with what's on the field after doing so.
If you really want to commit 4 out of your 15 SB slots to a non-cantrip, single purpose Tormod's Crypt, be my guest, but Crypt is definitely not the end all answer you think it is.

crypt isn't going to shut down what golgari is going to do in standard-for example, they're still going to have the ability to plop down a turn 2 trampling regenerator that is capable of being a 7/6 right after hitting the board without the use of scavenge(if it wants). It's still going to be able to answer the majority of every deck's early game with abrupt decay. It's still going to have grisly salvage to act as a creature/land centric impulse. TC will slow the progress, yes, but it's not going to be as horrible for golgari as Dryad Militant will be for Snapcaster...

In response to bro train, selesnya is the only other guild, but innistrad will still be standard. There are going to be plenty of green decks besides selesnya.

And I do have to say golgari can function without a graveyard, but without a graveyard it's No better than any other aggro. I can see jund aggro becoming a top deck, but golgari by itself will be a giant easily toppled.

Reading some of the comments makes me actually sad :(

If I were playing golgari zombies, and somebody dropped a Crypt, I honestly would not care the slightest bit. Oh no, my gravecrawlers! Oh no, my one trigger on my geralf's messenger! Omg, my scavenge mechanics! So what? If you're playing properly you won't over extend to the point that they have such an edge with one card either way. Yeah, losing gravecrawlers sucks, but you're still up on card advantage. If your 2/1 died in the first place, that card is technically dealt with, in terms of value. If they have to side in a card to deal with a card they've already dealt with, they're losing value. Same with geralf. Sure, losing value on their end seems as though they're gaining something- preventing a 4/3 body and 2 life loss, or a swarm of 'bloodghasts', or a free pump, but either way they're still losing value by doing this. I would not be caught dead siding in tormod's crypts v.s. zombies. That is not the answer to that strategy by any means.

Know what is? Pillar of flame, oblivion ring, thrag tusk, olivia voldaren- answers that answer what they're doing while at the same time putting you ahead. 1 card for 1 card, it's a numbers game.

Now, with that being said, I'm not saying Golgari is the best deck, by any means. Personally, I expect to mop that MU with 4 maindeck pillar of flames, 4 thrag tusk and 3 olivia. However, if your answer to that matchup is to deal with that you've already dealt with, good luck.

I agree. TC wont the cure all agiasnt Golgari, but will def hold golgari by the sack. As for reanimators, they are usually small enough to deal with if u have good.creatures, or like u said anything to exile them or gain control. Reanimators is waaaaaaaaayy different then the G/B golgari beatdown everyone is bent on creating. If ur talking aout reanimators yes, u will need a more efficent strategy.

This argument is pretty solid, and makes valid points. You don't remove something post play, because if you -need- to their is something you didn't do correctly in the first place. If it wasn't a threat and was pushed into the yard already, then what is the problem with them getting it back? Big deal.

Geralf's Messenger is ONE trigger. 2 LIFE. Thragtusk's body, token, and life gain all answer him adequately, and if your playing Blink like I am, two/three Thragtusk triggers in a row is pretty damn hard to get past for any player.

Golgari will have the advantage of bigger creatures, but that all comes at a cost for them. Playing Lotleth Troll, and dumping literally the entire hand to pump him to a 7/6, and say realistically Scavenging with one, maybe two Slitherhead's, well, what I have to say to players that think that's a good idea before they even really know what colors there opponent is playing is going to be a serious laugh for your opponent watching you top deck for two turns or more while he beats you in the face after that Dreadbore. If you have more than 10 life left be glad your opponent sucks.

Is it a tough card. Yes. Serious problem on turn two? Could be. Serious problem beyond turn two? No, I doubt it. By Mid-game the card itself won't even have value because you'll have to way overextend to make him useful, and by then detaining it will be done with ease. The thing with Golgari is they won't have many of these brutes to spare, and between a counter, and two detains there won't be much wiggle room for Golgari's plays, and honestly people aren't looking at Jarad hard enough or something. He is the real threat in the deck if you ask me, and a major one, yet the market is flooded with his decks still. Just last night their was still a full stand of Izzet vs Golgari dualdecks at walmart.

Ethanlewis - You seem like a really good player. I'd like for you to check out my blink style deck, and give me your input on how you integrate another color? Blue, and red are the two I'm most interested in, but I feel detain is going to help out more than red will on it's own, especially with the exalted.

I agree with squiggy_b about the UW aggro control. Detain is a great way to shut down or stall for some hard pounding aggro. I also think UR speed burn will be competing for top deck.

It will def be a contender. However with all those cards cycling out its getting hurt a lot. It will also be a lil slow against U/W cuz they can protect them selves. I definitely see a giant clash between izzet and azorius for the bragging rights of top deck.

Like almost everyone else, I'll be playing Golgari. It really pisses me off that Wizards made a bunch of op anti-graveyard cards such as Tormod's Crypt, Ground Seal, and Grafdigger's Cage, but that won't stop me from playing Golgari. 4 Naturalizes, a Crushing Vines and maybe a couple Acidic Slimes in my sideboard should almost neutralize those threats.

0

Yeah U/W is def gonna be top. Golgari dudes I luv golgari too there just not gonna be top contenders. Yes u can get rid of the artifacts and enchantments that mess up the graveyard but izzet and azorius willjust counyer the spell or protect the card. They have a chance with Abrupt Decay tho. And ik awesomeness it sucks with all the anit grave shit. I wouldve ran golgari if it werent for that.

I'll be playing Selesnya and Golgari, and sadly losing to Azorius decks :P. I might even try out Rakdos though depending on how badass he turns out to be. But actually awesomeness42 (great name), Ground Seal looks like it could actually benefit Golgari decks, since Scavenge is the main mechanic. It would protect against Tormod's Crypt quite well. Unfortunately, I think everyone is correct in thinking that Detain mixed with some counters will be too powerful to beat.

You know that Ground Seal doesn't protect anyone from Tormod's Crypt, right? The Crypt targets a player, but Ground Seal only stops individual cards from being targeted. Witchbane Orb would technicaly protect you from Crypt.

I'm still going to play Selesnya with exalted. I doubt I really even add too much of Selesnya to the deck honestly, it'll just be more of the Blink deck that's been going around. It really just depends on what I can find. Precinct Captain I've already ordered. With exalted+ Rancor he will be amazing. I've been thinking of adding blue, but I've seen it a lot, and it's pretty slow for my personal tastes. Normally, I avoid three color decks like the plague, so even considering it raises my interested. Detain is indeed a powerful ability, and will definitely win games. Exalted on top of that could be a crazy combination, but I've already got Rancor so I'll just have to wait for the release I guess, haha.

Serenity Angel is another of my concerns. Is it worth it to play one at her mana cost? What do other think about her? She's obviously good, but we do have Oblivion rings in standard. Do we really -need- to pay seven mana for her? I can't search her with Mwonvuli Beast Tracker, and Sublime is just so good I figure I'd probably play a third of her before Serenity. What does everyone else think?

Golgari is not as good as people think it is. There is no RFG support for the deck, and most Scavenge plays are very high cost, and would be generally the only thing you do in a single turn. I think the mana ramp Liliana will be a must in it. I feel like it's going to be clunky, slow, and all around a power aggro.
People could say the same thing about mine; the two advantages I have on them will be numbers, and I only have to attack with one of my creatures to add massive pressure my opponent leaving myself with a board full of sometimes large blockers (Entreat the Angels).

Personally people seem to be underestimating the value of the core set, and Innistrad block cards that are simply ridiculously powerful. One set from the new block will not by any means put ANY of the guilds in a top tier spot in my opinion.

I know I'm going to be making a Jund +1/+1 counter deck. The green/black cards coming out are great when combo-ed with stuff like Olivia Voldaren and Stromkirk Noble. Midrange Jund counters is going to be amazing. Especially since Farseek and the new dual lands have synergy allowing for the 3 colors to not be a problem at all

the thing is you guys are just thinking guilds, not actual decks. Xcrunner471 is right, tri-color decks will be flourishing, we have no idea what to say is gonna be good when only a third of a set which is a third of a block is leaked, once the whole set is done and leaked is when to really start brewing, but for now, I see grixis and jund being the colors I'm building. ;]

golgari is bomb. high class early game beaters with quite significant late game abilities. Mean, just mean... Take that four drop 5/5.... Thats pretty good. Oh, and you can pay six mana to make another creature super powerful later on when its dead. Or the three for a 3/3 haste. Pretty good, but again, lots of late game potential with scavenge.

B/G beatdown will dominate, not sure if it will take down delver, but it will certainly dominate.

With the rotation of scars will come the end of phyrexian mana, lots of counter spells, and vapor snag. But, with the release of izzet, U/R delver will probably be the new cool thing. My izzet deck(yeah, I'm a fanboy) will feature four guttersnipes, three or four talrands, four delvers, four goblin electromancers, and maybe some hypersonic/niv mizzet dragons thrown in for the sake of flavor and fun. Then counter spells and burn. It will go over big! BIG I TELL YOU!!!!!!

Azorius will have supreme verdict or whatever its called. Lets all just stop playing U/W.

G/W will be fun. RTR's selesnya features loxodon smiter(prime time beater, easy turn two play, or you can attack with him turn two. Thank you ravenous rats) thragtusk, restoration angel, a good 8 pieces of ramp, some removal, and I suppose some other new selesnya beaters. How about that tasty new one drop dryad? Maybe the population guild leader. good stuff guys, good stuff.

Rakdos= burn, kill, pillage, repeat. Yes, it will be good. Thats about it.

Gatecrash won't feature anything special, and I'll bet that's why its the second set.

Oh, and nivmagus elemental is extended's bitch.

detain/bounce/sleep aggressive tempo! it works perfectly! Think about it! Also, midrange. Limited will suck as it usually does during sets full of overpowered cards (R.I.P Ravnica as it once was, but who knows? Maybe they'll make sure not to screw up like they did in avacyn restored, and actually make it the least bit balanced) But I can see soooo many opportunities for different and new archetypes to form. You can tell I'm excited because I keep thinking of new things.

And.... As soon as RTR releases, we should have a deck building design competition. My prediction is that I'll lose. I'm such a sorcerer! ^.^

i've been running a U/R delver deck for a little while now and the only counter is going to be izzet charm-and only then because of it's versatility. if you build the deck around burn/bounce counters are unnecessary and counter-intuitive. I'd like to find a home for guttersnipe, but he'll probably end up a 1or 2 of. Dracogenius will be my finisher for sure...although if I open with delver flipped on turn 2 I probably won't even need Nivvy to hit the board.

Well, I'm going with Golgari for standard, but I'd like to actually elaborate on why (as nobody else seems to be) I won't be making the generic "graveyard based" Golgari, like the scavenge effect wants you to. In my opinion, it does seem a bit weak, especially to Tormod's crypt. I'll be building a deck for Lotleth Troll, or as i have named him Lol Troll. I mean seriously, does anyone else see an amazing synergy between him, Slitherhead, Gravecrawler and Corpsejack Menace!?!?! Once i discard things with him, they won't be staying in my graveyard for long (hopefully nullifying the crypt before they can use it), I'll either be scavenging them (Slitherhead) playing them straight from graveyard (Gravecrawler) or simply putting them back in my hand to use again (Disentomb). As for any graveyard hate, I fully intend on using Duress to the fullest.

For Modern, I intend on using Izzet, mostly because of Nivmagus Elemental. This just seems amazing, because his ability works on Storm and Replicate aswell! But my favourite by far, is that all the "when you cast" effects still trigger, meaning you still get tons of stuff for casting something anyway. So I'm looking at Nivmagus Elemental, Kiln Fiend, Guttersnipe, Wee Dragonauts, Charmbreaker Devils, Talrand, Gelectrode, Inexorable Tide, Surrakar Spellblade, Sphinx Bone-Wand, and almost every spell out there (especially Phyrexian Mana spells!)

Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth.

0

i also planned on centering my deck around that lovable troll. Ghoulcaller's chant>disentomb.
Opening with Overgrown tomb/swamp or forest, loltroll and 3 slitherheads and duress would be amazing.
overgrown tomb duress, t2(draw slitherhead) forest, loltroll(discard 4x slitherhead's, scavenge them all)-loltroll=10/9 trample/regen...t3??? attack...

0

exactly, that kind of thing, but I'm even happier now, because of Jarad's Orders. That + Disentomb + Lol Troll: Win.

I'm going to be running Azorious and Izzet until Gatecrash and then I'm swapping Izzet for Dimir.

Golgari and Izzet look to me my favorite colors right now. However, I REALLY want to see a Wolf Run Ramp deck featuring Nivmagus Elemental and Wild Defiance.

Think about it - target the elemental with a one-drop spell and exile it for +5/+5. Activate Wolf Run for the trample, and go nuts. Guttersnipe could go off each time, too.

I still think Azorious will be best, because they have answer for evrrything. They will be able to remove all threats with a mixture of detain, bouncing, and countering. Field lock will be easy.

As for all the Golgari hype, I like golgari, I was gonna go golgari untill I started seeing the awesomeness of azorious. Lol troll is an amazing card that will give many decks a run for there money nut im still skeptical. When lol troll hits amd if ur dum enough to drop all creatures in your hand all your opponent has to do is unsummon it. Now u have little to no hand multiple exiled sliterheads and ur opponent only lost one card. If lol troll drops again gurantee it gettings countered. Any creatures who get past countering are getting detained. All the while Azorious will.be flying over pimped out with Runechnaters Pike. Abrupt Decay will stop one creature if u can draw it. Other than the Lol Troll, Corpsejack, and Braska Golgari doesnt have much going for standard.

Since Golgari seems really powerful, but very vulnerable, maybe a U/B/G graveyard-based would work better than just B/G Golgari. Blue contributes more self-mill and can counter the spells that would normally destroy a Golgari deck. Negate in particular would be helpful considering most cards that kill Golgari are non-creature spells.

I think that golgari is going to be incredibly popular. I'm really interested to see what Dimir has to offer as the appropriately named House of Secrets has yet to be spoiled. Aggro Jund will be a big contender.

Return To Ravnica sure is a great serie. The only card who scare and frustrate me is Dreadbore...2 mana(RB) to destroy TARGET CREATURE( yeah destroy target creature, like murder ) or PLANESWALKER( wtf??! ). Seriously this is too OP I can't believe Wizard Of The Coast created a card like this...even if it is a sorcery.

Naya tokens should be fun. The versatility of huntmaster of the fells and the noncombat swarm damage from hellrider seem like very useful things to have in a token deck. It'll probably be mostly gw, but a splash of red seems like a fun and interesting idea to me.

If I were to call it from now, I would say that the big decks from RTR are going to be from Izzet and Azorius. I'm excited to see what Dimir has to offer though.

U/W/R, Izzet combined with Azorius, I bet it will be the top deck.
Guttersnipe, plus burn, and counter spells, enemy gets too many critters out, bomb the field with supreme verdict, or just bounce it back.
Izzet charm, Azorius charm.
Throw in growing ranks to populate your guttersnipe/judges familiar each turn.
Counter spells, burn, defense, destruction. What more could you want?

I like Izzet league, and i hope for a control meta, so i can play my grixis control deck. But from the spoilers it seems that aggro/midrange will be the meta.

Golgari will probably be the most popular decks, with a great aggro or midrange. I think we will see a lot of Scavenge in GPs, PTs and at the local stores.

Izzet might also be good, with Delvers and Snapcasters, good burn and other control cards. Their Overload mechanic will see a lot of play.

I think Azorius will have to go into Delver to be fast enough, but the Detain mechanic will be extreamly good with a beatdown.

Rakdos will probably be good on beatdown, with haste Unleash creatures

Tokens with Selesnya could be good, but they might have to go black or blue to stand up to the aggressive metagame.

hopefully it does go to aggro. standard right now and has felt like nothing but control just because of delver. really annoying seeing delver win 7/10 tourneys. hopefully RTR will bring in more diversity and more then just one deck winning all the tourneys. it really discourages even playing a different deck other then delver. i do like playing for fun but going into tourneys with someone playing delver is just like a mindset of playing for second place.

But playing delver is aggressive; a 3/2 attacker on turn 2!!!
I think delver will be played until Innistrad is out of standard.

true delver is an aggro card, but if you look at how U/w delver decks started out, they comepletely controled you so that delver COULD beat you down. with its vapor snags, dungeon geists, snapcasters, and the images. in the later stages of delver if wound up going like half aggro/control with its delvers and saint trafts + resto angels.

WTF is wrong with people!! gatecrash is gonna be gruul central... ok not really but still i don't think people are realizing just how bitchin' gruul wolf-run is gonna be...

...P.S. golgari and selesnya are my RTR picks just cause of the idea of (Trostani>tree of redemption>feed the pack) and with A's pilgrim and all that other ramp out there this shit could happen and even if you only have 1 life when ToR comes in thats 14 tokens and another 28 life from trostani.

And golgari cause Corpsejack>Primordial hydra with some ramping again possible and thats triple his counters every upkeep throw in some slitherheads, rings of kalonia and xathrid and blessings of nature and that's some total bullshit.

Nivmagus Elemental Creature - Elemental Rare
Exile an instant or sorcery spell you control: Put two +1/+1 counters on Nivmagus Elemental.

gonna be nice in standard but imagine this card in modern with Pact of negotiation and Pact of the titan.
they each cost zero and since they won't resolve you don't have to worry about losing the game. can't wait.

Honestly "Detention Sphere" along "Oblivion Ring" will make Azorius one heck a guild... IMO Azorius is gonna be the strongest guild from these 5, but I will always be Simic at heart.

I'm having a hard time play testing, trying to find some new synergy in the cards and delver has a huge advantage over any matchup at the moment and there is little to no answers for them. Anyone have a link of some of the projected decks so far with the minimal amount of cards available? Might give me an idea to work on and tweak to my liking.

I'm impressed with what I saw on the spoilers so far!..

My favorite Guids R Baros & Izzet & I hope, they will release "Lightning Helix" again & something much lethal, than "Electrolize"... :)

I'm gonna' make a jund with Vraska, Decay, Dreadbore & Mortars, etc...

Also a W/U/R with Verdict, Mortars, Detention, 2 Niv, 2 Isperia, etc...

As soon as all 10 guilds appear, 3 color decks will be much effective...

You might also want to add the new rakdos lord of riots
he costs 2 red and 2 black. He is a 6/6 trample and flyer and you have to have dealt damage to an opponent that turn to play him. Lastly the best part: creature spell you control cost 1 less to play for each life point lost by an opponent this turn.
ITS SICK NASTY!!!!!!!

Ok so after looking after the spoiler. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be doing both Selesnya and Azorius. I'm thinking maybe population paired with parallel lives mixed with detain is just going to mess shit up. Its amazing that almost noone here has seen this potential. Either way I have a complete set and a couple booster boxes on pre-order not to mention I'll be at the pre-release. So I'll deck up shortly post rotation.

Actually, I've been thinking since my last comment here. I'm with 110101010101010 (or whatever it is) now. Golgari Lol Troll probably won't go too far. Since almost every guild will have some kind of cheap/easy removal, he'll get owned early, or detained, and then what? Not like you have much of a hand to play with... TC isn't a problem. Detain is.

And my favourite card released so far is Blistercoil Elemental (an uncommon!). Seriously, has nobody else seen him + Dual Casting!?!?!?!? So I'll be making an interesting 2/3 color, R/G and maybe U. Blistercoil, Dual Casting, Guttersnipe, and the player's own preference of spells, could easily make a devistating deck. Blistercoil + Dual Casting + Infernal Plunge = Infinite R or P/T Blistercoil. Personaly, I'll be playing him with some serious G pump spells, R Reverberate-type effects, and Kessing wolf-run (for trample). Feeling the pain of removal? Add U for counters, or even detain (anti-blockers).

Seriously, I think this could go top-tier. I'll post up a decklist soon.

Most seem to like it but it's over hyped. It's going to suck in my opinion, but I could be wrong. Dredge was a great mechanic, but most self mill is OP by design. BG had it's time to shine, but now is not that I don't believe.

If U want to take full adventage of the power the multicolor spells bring to the table & the stability U gain with using shock - lands with M13 duals, than U play 3 color decks in standard, when RTR comes out...

Using 3 colors gives U opportunity to have the "medicine" for most or all spells that could threaten your victory, 'cuz more colors means much affinity & could give U protection for many kind of spells...

Now, that the whole set is out, I C that Selesnya is the strongest among guilds, but it's much effective with adding another color & play Bant, Junk, or W/G/R (each 3 combinations R worth now)...

W/R/U & Jund is also pretty strong right now, but I think I'm gonna' make Grixis for my 1st deck...

Probable complection: 1x Jace Architect of Thoughts, 3x Cyclonic Rift, 4x Inaction Injunction, 4x Desecration Demon, 3x Izzet Guildmage, 4x Mizzium Mortars, 3x Auger Spree, 3x Counterflux, 4x Dreadbore, 4x Goblin Electromancer, 2x Izzet Charm, 2x Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius

Lands: 4x Blood Crypt, 4x Steam Vents, 4x Drowned Catacomb, 1x Dragonskull Summit, 1x Sulfur Falls, 2x Evolving Wilds, 3x Mountain, 2x Island, 2x Swamp

Sideboards: 4x Rakdos Charm, 3x Cremate, 4x Slaughter Games, 2x Dissipate, 2x Guttersnipe

Description: Auger Spree & Mizzium Mortars could assist 1 another & Spree is good with the Demon & Niv... ... Goblin Electromancer could assist Izzet Guildmage... I chose the Guildmage for the main deck instead of Guttersnipe, but I don't yet know wic would work better...

Here is a discussion I'm starting regarding RTR: http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=386870

1 more thing: I'm going to prerelease twice on sept 29 & 30 in 2 different locations in Hungary & Austria!.. :)

It's a great opportunity to get some of the cards U'll need later...

I think I'll chose Izzet pack at 1st & probably Selesnya for 2nd, 'cuz I'm planning on making a Bant &/or W/R/U deck as well...
