My main goal with this deck is to pioneer B/W to a respectable place in the meta-game so that it is at a relatively competitive level and to make a fun deck. In ACR sealed and at the M13 prerelease I played B/W and they both were fun decks and worked out well, I really hope B/W can become a tier 2/1 deck some day, so with this deck I am trying to lead at the bleeding edge of the meta-game and venture into uncharted territory. At the bleeding edge you can get cut, so feel free to modify the main-deck and sideboard to fit your play-style. The main inspiration was to fuse together the two stellar 40 card decks I played during ACR and the M13 Prerelease and make a viable (but, balanced and fun) standard/modern legal deck. To all the
(sweaty) try-hards out there, leave your inhibitions and hatred surrounding white at the door or you will get nowhere and potentially miss out on a deck archetype that you will love. I.E. At first I hated the devour deck, then, I started to adjust and now I know how absurdly fun and effective (and balanced) it is and I will hold it dearly in my heart for as long as I play magic. And from that experience I feel like I have grown as a player.
First and foremost, this is NOT a weenie deck in the true sense, but, this is an extreme variant on the B/W Weenie exalted archetype. Most of the serious threats end up being or are LARGE creatures. This deck is NOT the next Delver or Necro; This is balanced and isn't built to break the format but, it definitely doesn't suck and (imo) doesn't use the sub-par "fixed" cards like cancel or shock. Like every fair deck it's plays CAN be countered but, with a skilled player, it shouldn't matter. Anyways, this deck is designed to lock up the opponent's board as the threats become bigger and bigger problems like a tumor. Also, it is psychological so you can read people to "control" the field. This deck can race with mono-black and maybe even mono-red and can draw out battles to a crawl. This is also designed so that any card can become a systemic problem and a threat. In limited I ran a weaker variant of this deck and I went 2-2 and I'm not a phenomenal player. Very advantageous against slower decks (I.E. Ramp decks without early drops/ early drops that the opponent is not willing to trade blows with I.E. Llanowar Elves) and decks without a response. This deck acknowledges the power of flyers in this format, and satisfies that need imo; Also, this sideboard I made to help futureproof the deck. This feels like a planechase-like deck that's fun to play with and NOT miserable to play against. Unfortunately, it does have a small learning curve like commander or planechase and gives strong incentives for you to alter your play-style slightly when playing this deck. Though, this deck does contain elements from all 3 styles of decks. Clearly, there is a strong aggro element to this deck being related to white weenie, you can slow games in your favor like in control decks, this deck lets you string together combos I didn't even design almost like in a combo deck. It is still very well rounded in play style but, it doesn't use many high cmc fatties because, it's just unnecessary in this type of deck. The midrange-high (4-6) cmc cards (and Mikaeus) are the bombs because of how often cards get beefed up by equipment and/or counters.
Note:
-Very aggressive players might want to consider adding more land because this deck will have you constantly emptying your mana pool moving equipment, beefing up Chronomaton, using removal etc. even if you're top-decking.
-Also, trading up your disentombs for purify the graves might be a good choice against reanimator and blue control decks that run snapcaster. Grafdigger's Cage is a bad idea in this because it blocks off the flashback Lingering Souls + Mentor of the Meek draw two combo.
Major Combo List:
-Mentor of the Meek + Creatures that start with power at and under two (most of these cards) and more importantly Bloodline Keeper and Thraben Doomsayer for cheap cantrips and free card draws. Also, you can draw two with lingering souls for uber card advantage.
-Chronomaton synergizes well with Bloodline Keeper, Thraben Doomsayer, and Duty-Bound Dead.
-Ring of Thune/Xathrid works and interacts like Chronomaton, but, it is better. Just be sure to equip them to appropriately colored creatures.
-Mikaeus works well with Bloodline Keeper and Thraben Doomsayer.
-Obviously exalted creatures like Duty-Bound Dead or Knight of Glory/Infamy will help the longevity of Bomb cards.
Tips:
-Chronomaton can be used as a very effective psychological and physical blocker when your mana pool is empty and the opponent has field advantage.
-Go with the flow, keep calm, and avoid being impulsive. This deck has a very flexible speed.
-Beef up your threats with the rings, it really helps against removal and acts faster then you would think.
-If you get the Ring of Xathrid, pass it around if necessary before and after combat.
-You may want to consider buying stoneforge mystic and a few other mirrodin swords (war and peace) if you don't mind losing friends/don't do tournaments.
P.S. The sideboard is essentially substitution considerations for this deck, should you make a deck like this. Primarily so that it can be played in standard. Remember ANY creature card can be a threat in this deck, so don't leave out smaller creatures; they get bigger quickly , I can guarantee you. This deck is built so that you are always doing something even if you are top-decking.
And a final word of advice even if you don't normally use them, put some D6s in your deck box ;D. You'll thank me later.
