Deck Description

My good friend made a darksteel deck using the fast mana capabilities of green spells, I thought it would be easy to play him with my best burn deck (Four turn burn) but he was devastatingly good. He asked me to see if any improvements are needed, so I come to all the fellow deck builders and modifiers, please comment on suggestions that could make this deck (dare I say...) better

Deck discussion for Darksteel Mana Ramped

pretty cool. maybe add sol ring and mana vault in place of two arch druids, or maybe two priest of titania for those two?

err maybe for the walls put in a set of priest of tatania this way your archdruids will cover those elves and you wont have to replace the archdruids. the sol ring and manavault would work well with the juggernauts because they are both artifacts.

just had another idea thatll go with your deck. take out 4 forest and put in mishra's factory x4. The reason for this is that they themselves turn into artifacts if you pay one mana and they become 2/2 artifact creatures until end of turn. They better than mutas imo for this deck because of the second ability which is tap a mishra's and give a factory worker +1/+1 until end of turn . So you can start buffing them up if need be.

IMO, drop the elves altogether. As well as Copper Myr.

Add 4x of each: Strata Scythe, Eldrazi Conscription, Etched Champion, Steel Overseer, Harrow, and Cultivate.

The Harrow and Cultivate will provide mana ramp with a more consistent benefit via Strata Scythe. Eldrazi Conscription and Etched Champion provide additional means to break through defense, and Steel Overseer will help protect against infect.

Edit: That was, the Elves, BoP, and Overgrown Battlement.

I disagree on Harrow and Cultivate being better mana ramp than the elves. If you're first play is a Cultivate on turn 3, that sets you up with only 5 mana on turn 4. This seems good, except when you consider the likely possibility of turn 1 Llanowar or Arbor Elf, Turn 2 Elvish Archdruid or Mul Daya Channeler, leading into a possible Darksteel Juggernaut as early as turn 3. The only flaw is that yes, the elves are subject to creature removal, but your plan is just more susceptible to blitz agro. Both plans have potential flaws, it's simply a matter of preference.

It was a bit late when I made my post, and in my mind I had a more detailed synopsis of either or, but omitted it from my post.

Initially when I considered the land-fetch to pump Strata Scythe, I had considered a few more spells to be involved -- namely Explore (recently becoming a huge fan of that) and Khalni Heart Expedition. Between the two, it is entirely possible to maintain a comparable mana rush, albeit a good drop on turn 4, not 3. More likely than not, though, the Elves will more consistently provide big early drops; however, at least in my local meta, Day of Judgment and the sort are very popular which often dispels any advantages the elves would have provided. The biggest issue with my suggestion is the lack of room for the cards to really make it viable (IE: ~22 or 23 lands, plus the spells)

Btw, if it were between a 3rd turn Juggernaught, Sentinel, or even 2x Darksteel Myr, I'd rather not the Juggernaught. At that point, it is only a 1/1, and must attack every turn. A 3rd turn Sentinel is your ideal drop.

Back to the drawing board for suggestions, though. Mox Opal does not fit in this deck, and I would avoid running Tree of Tales. There are no 0-drop artifacts aside from the lands, which you can only lay one per turn. The Mox is most beneficial in a deck for the possibility of a 1st turn drop. Tree of Tales is subject to a plethora of cheap artifact destruction, and since SoM those cards have become much more common in decks. IMO, 4x Oran-Rief in place of the Tree of Tales. The +1/+1 counters are a really good counter to infect or Contagion Engines, which will be the downfall (also very common, at least around here) of your indestructible creatures. If you like the elves, then IMO you have enough mana ramp there, the Mox Opal could be exchanged for the Steel Overseers I mentioned before, to also protect against infect / C.Engine.

The BoP are also out of place. No need for mana of any color, and they're not elves. I'd run another 1st turn drop mana Elf (since this is not standard or extended) like Fyndhorn.

If you're going for an elf theme, I might recommend Arbor Elf, If you're going for standard, in place of Birds of Paradise. If you're not going for standard though, then Fyndhorn Elves fits in the spot. They tap for the same green mana that you need, double as an elf to help boost the mana you're Archdruids are putting out.

Likewise, if you're not going for standard, and just want more fast mana ramp, you could take out the Battlements and add Priests of Titania. 8 1 drop mana producers that lead into 4 two drops and 4 three drops is pretty ridiculous mana acceleration.

One last suggestion, works for both standard and casual, is simply this Whispersilk Cloak. Stick it on your Juggernaut and pound the damage through.

I've done a fair few elf decks in the past, and my only problem with Joraga Treespeaker, are if you play it turn 1, level it turn 2, just to have them kill it in response. An alternative to this, is to invest in a 3 drop rare, that is still pretty cheap. Mul Daya Channelers. You only have 4 cards in your deck that don't trigger it as either a mana producer or a 5/5.

yeah i agree here. i think the battlements are maybe out of place. The only thing besides that is the lack of permant removable and air defense. Other than that its a fun deck. I think one of the other guys did not understand that the myr's add to the juggernauts bonus. Though I think in place of the myr's there could be something different. I know its cuttign it close to lacking green mana but in additions to 4 mishra's you can get blinkmoth nexus's x2 or 4 depending on your green mana drawing. the blinmoth ar like mishras except they're actually flying and are 1/1 . also if you grab a gae's cradle land which gives you one G for each creature you control, that'll really speed things up once you get creatures up. You can also if you can afford it in the mana, get tolarian academy which adds one U for each artifact you control. some other ideas would be to maybe find a way to get a nevinryal's disk and darksteel forges in there to wipe the table whenever things are not going the way you like. I think its a fun deck, but I'd start off with utility lands like mishra's and blinkmoth and maybe a karakas for bounce and then work on replacing creatures.

the all angel deck i made has some of these lands in them.

yeah the lands thing i going great. Maybe take out the darksteel citadel even though its indestructable and artifact, and put in gae's cradle or tolarian academy because now that you have artificat lands that one land will produce 2 or more if theres an artifact land in play. I see what your doing with primevil titans. maybe take one out and put in a 1 green mana enchantment called fastbound. It allows you to drop as many lands into play on a turn, though you get 1 damage for each land beyond the first.

Well the tolarian academy is a bit impossible for me to get currently, so darksteel citadel should do for now, especially since its indestructible, thats more artifacts for the juggernaut. The primeval Titan needs to be two having more than 1 of any titan is an advantage in itself, becuase when you get the right draws, its a very useful card to get in. I think two is enough, incase the other one gets killed by something. But I greatly appreciate the comments, and if I ever get the tolarian academy, then I will add it in this deck

if you have lots of elves you could swap the titans for 2 x a card called primalcrux possibly they are very hard to deal with

Glimmerposts and Cloudposts and Vesuvas?

Just saying... 6 mana on turn 3 and 12 mana (colorless, but hey, it's kinda an artifact deck anyway) on turn 4 is nice. And that's with lands only.

well, its not meant to gain life, its meant to get out the darksteel awesomeness fairly quickly, and adding colorless lands will affect consistency.

But thanks for the suggestion

I second adding Gaea's Cradle and switching out the Birds of Paradise for Fyndhorn Elves. Depending on the format you play, replace the Mox Opal with a Sol Ring or 2. Also Mishra's Factory does look like it may fit well in here.

My biggest suggestion is to take out 4 Joraga Treespeaker and add in 4 Elvish Piper.
Then take out 4 Copper Myr and add in 2-4 Darksteel Colossus (to top off your Darksteel Deck) or when it comes out 4 blightsteel Colossus.

I would also consider taking out 2-4 Darksteel Axe for 2-4 Cranial Plating which should make for some massive sized creatures.

Or better yet instead of Darksteel Axe or Cranial Plating try 4 O-Naginata or Vorrac Battlehorns or Horned Helm or maybe Loxodon Warhammer.

That will give your Darksteel Juggernaut Trample and make them nearly unstoppable.

Heh... this is cool. I have never seen a darksteel based deck bfore - it looks to me to be really good. Try an omnath, as the darksteel spells are really. good. Also, when it comes out, blightsteel collosus will be a very good addition.

I would run Growth Spasm for some ramp
You can drop Primeval Titan on turn 3!!!
Turn 1 forest, LLanowar Elves
Turn 2 forest, tap lands and elf drop Growth Spasm
Turn 3 forest, tap 4 forests, elf and sac the spawn BAM! Titan
