Deck Description

This is a deck I am purchasing for fnm. I tried to keep it budget friendly, and aside from collective brutality (that card can't be dropped, it holds the deck together), the deck is very inexpensive. I don't expect to win very often, but i love the way the deck works and I want to see how it goes.

How to Play

Black burn plays somewhat similarly to traditional burn, just a bit slower. What it lacks in speed it makes up for in stability, as all the "burn" spells also gain you life. Unlike other versions of burn, this has a late game threat in chancellor of the dross. Chancellor is a key player in this deck. Use it in your opening hand to helix your opponent for free, then pitch it to collective brutality or smallpox, or keep it in hand during the control matchup and play it late game after you've burned through their counters. Collective brutality functions as not only a utility spell, but a discard outlet as well. Play it on turn two to get rid of your chancellors, or on turn three to madness an alms of the vein. The rogue package is to prowl out morsel theft, and sign in blood can either refill your hand or deal the last few points of damage. Leechridden swamp also pushed the last few points through.
In the sideboard you have ichorid and syphon life against control, sadistic sacrament against Tron and combo decks, detection to try and save the day against leyline, nihil spellbomb for graveyard hate, and finally, four needlebite traps to punish lifegain.

Deck discussion for Mono Black Burn

Hey it's the D&T guy here. I like this deck! I also am a sucker for black but I equally like blue and white so Esper is my jam. Anyway, a few suggestions, I don't know if you meant to include it or not, but def consider Bump in the Night. It is a 1 black mana deal 3 damage to target opponent. So basically, it's the black version of lava spike that you can flashback if you splash red. I'd find a slot to run 4-of for sure. Maybe slash nightblade stinger and 1-2 alms of the vein? I own a blue/black faerie rogues deck, and have been considering nightblade stinger for my 1 mana slot, but I don't think it belongs in this kind of deck. Direct damage seems more the goal. I saw you run smallpox, so you could also go more rip the hand apart strategy and add mind rot or hymn to tourach. Hymn isn't modern legal but if this is just a casual deck no worries. Wrench Mind also does almost the exact same thing as hymn and is modern legal so another card to consider. Collective Brutality is just gas. I love that card. Too bad it spiked so much. I should've bought 'em up while they were still pretty cheap. Anyway, you have plenty of draw power, life drain/gain, and interaction so looks good to me! Sorry if I ramble, I just love magic and love talking about it.

Thanks for the feedback! My original build did have bump, but for the simple fact of purity, I binned it because I didn't want to splash red. Stinger is only there to increase the rogue count. It also has evasion like cutthroat to make sure it doesn't get chump blocked. I'm steering away from hand disruption to stick to the burn plan. I have pox so that I have another outlet to toss away cards that want to go away, like chancellor and alms. If this was a casual or even legacy I would include sickening dreams as a 4 of. It does exactly what I want and it does it well. It's a board wipe for go wide strategies, a burn spell for when I'm drawing too many lands, and an outlet for cards that want to be pitched. I'm even considering going legacy to include it. Brutality is the only card I haven't been able to find a budget option for. There's no replacement for it. That card alone quadrupled the cost of the deck. I ordered the deck, sideboard invluded, for about $15. This is not including brutality. With it, it's over $100.
