Deck Description

This deck is a modified clone of Pauper defender by Kazzong.

I really liked Kazzong's pauper defender deck, so this is the version I am doing for myself. It is no longer "pauper" but is still a "budget" deck, so easy to put together for casual play.

I usually keep my decks modern-legal, but Shield Sphere is kind of hard to replace. If I really had to, I would put in the extra Aether Membrane and probably the Hornet Nests.

How to Play

Tons of low-cost defenders along with mana producers to ramp into a tremendous Banefire blast. Vent Sentinel will tend to give pretty heavy shots as well without many ways to defend against it.

Deck discussion for Bonfire Defender

Fascinating. Similar to mine, but certainly unique, and a little different. I think assault formation is an excellent choice here as another win condition, particularly with shield sphere.

The only thing I might look into changing is your dig spell. I would be curious to see if you think there could be something better than lead the stampede in modern, or casual I guess since shield sphere prevents modern legality.

On the whole. This gets a +1 from me. I bore it serves you well.

Thanks, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the modifications. A lucky hand full of Shield Spheres and Assault Formation can make for some interesting early turns.

I am sure you noticed I also abandoned Dangerous Wager when I cut down to the 2 Lead's. Card draw is not something I normally think about with creature-based builds like this, but I like being able to grab a handful with that card and since over a third of the deck is creatures it is a good bet you will get some. I really think it is the best green has to offer in this situation. Red has a couple good draw cards that could work, too. Faithless Looting is a draw 2 discard 2 with flashback, and Prophetic Ravings is an enchantment that gives a card draw ability.

Yeah, I noticed that. I suppose when I built the original deck (which I do own) I noticed it tended to run out of cards rather quickly, and I started top-decking after only about 5-6 turns. So I figured a little draw couldn't hurt. Particularly since only a few of my creatures could actually give me a win, since I don't run with assault formation.

My solution for the original deck was Genesis wave, which lead the stampede replaced in the pauper version.
I suppose I wanted another outlet for the crazy amounts of mana the deck could generate.

That being said, I think lead the stampede is totally fine and should work very well here. I imagine it will be putting at least 2-3 creatures in your hand for each use.

And yeah, imagine an opening hand with 3 forests, 3 shield spheres, and an assault formation. Lol... Turn two, sing for 12, turn 3 swing for 18.

Ok, so, thought about this a little more. I don't actually own any copies of Genesis Wave and I guess I never looked at it very closely, either. I also thought it was a super-expensive card, but at only a couple bucks a pop it's not exactly a budget-buster. I also thought it was a creature dump, but now I realize it's any permanent, including lands.

So... yeah. Since I'm not building for Pauper format, Genesis Wave is clearly ideal for any high-mana green deck. I think I will get a few copies and It might even find its way in to my Elf deck.

Genesis Wave is rather good when you have a ton of mana, since it allows you so pretty much dump your whole deck onto the battlefield all at once.

The drawback is that it dumps any non permanent spell into the graveyard, which lead the stampede doesn't do. So you are not depriving yourself of drawing any other potential win conditions or removal spells like Wave tends to do. Again, that is from personal experience using Genesis Wave.

So really there are pros and cons to both cards. Either way, I would say pick what you like best, not what I like best. Your deck. Not mine. :)
