Fun with Melira and Persist! Infinite damage, infinite mill, infinite life gain combos. Very consistent.

-Once Melira's out, use a Blasting Station/Altar of Dementia with any Persist creature = win.

-Viscera Seer can be used with Murderous Redcap = win, or with Finks for infinite health

-Lightning Greaves (or Canopy Cover if you don't have Greaves) to protect Melira

-Tutors to get whatever piece you need for any combo/Zenith for either Melira or Safehold

Nice! I like this one, and not hard to get going as it looks like!

this is just wrong lol honestly can't think of any improvements... I really want to play with this deck! My friends would be so annoyed - none of them play extraction or anything like that

those Tutors are a no-brainer instead of Diabolic lol I can't believe I didn't even think about that. You might want to put in another Demonic if you have one instead of 1 of those Sign in Blood's but still I mean this thing tears it up now holy $%*& hah

Those 2 extra fetchlands are baller too why not two more Marsh Flats instead of Overgrown Tombs?

Yeah I dropped 2 Nature's Spirals also so I could get 3ofs on those tutors. They were just slowing down the pace and if I play my cards out properly I won't really need them..

I'm feeling that swapping a Sign for another Demonic would probably work out fine but I think ultimately I'd rather thin my deck out by 2 cards for 2 mana than by 1 card for 2 mana. I'm obsessed with thinning as much as humanly possible haha and as far as the fetches go, I'm already thinning a good amount so I'd rather have the option of color that the Tombs can provide in a pinch. I really don't mind paying 2 life at all (cough Signs cough), it is a great turn 1 land drop.

But yeah man this deck can kill someone pretty quickly haha I'm digging it a lot

What about dropping Worldly for Green Sun Zenith, it can grab Melira or Safehold Elite for 3 mana and put it on the battlefield instead of on top of your library!

Nice call, I'm going to try those out for a bit. I like the advantage of going right to the battlefield, as opposed to "wasting" a draw (and risking extraction/mill of the card I need.) Also, Worldly Tutor forces you to reveal the creature that you're putting on top of your library... a little sketchy. I'd rather keep that information to myself so that there's not even a chance of someone hitting me with a godforsaken Tomb Scour or other such card after they see that I put Melira on top of my library lol

We shall see how this fairs! I have a good feeling about it...I'll admnit I'm a bit concerned with the CMC but all in all I think this will probably improve the odds of success.

Thanks again

No problem I thought those might work out a bit better. These sample hands are pulling so nicely Ive just been sitting here pulling hands for a a few minutes and it seems like the recipe for victory comes very early very often. Those tutors/signs/zeniths really seal the deal

- 1 Murderous Redcap
+1 Demonic Tutor

Having 4 Redcaps was a bit too much, seeing as he doesn't get nearly as much play time compared to the cheaper combo components. Very easy choice dropping 1 to complete the Demonic Tutor playset.

I want to throw in Unnatural Predations so that if I have to, I can just trample through my opponent with an infinitely big Bloodthrone. This will give me another reliable win con., I just don't know if it's worth it. And if it is worth, what cards I should take out to make room. I could see possibly throwing 3 in? Any feedback would be appreciated!

eh just tested it out, didn't seem to get them when I needed the majority of the time... still open to suggestions for how I could utilize Bloodthrone a little bit better. She definitely can help the cause but I just haven't seen her involved in the winning combos as often as others. Options are nice though.

sigil captain can be a substitute for Melira, if she does get extracted, but it only works with murderous redcap and safehold elite, as the recurring creature must be a 1/1 after persist.

I've brewed a similar deck, check it out here: http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=196694

I like what you did to make Persist work forever, using Melira to prevent -1/-1 counters. Is there anything in here to guard against instants that use your own creatures against you in here?

Demonic tutor restricted to 1. Try a worldly tutor. I'm making my own spin off of this deck if you don't mind. Gonna try to speed it up a little and look for some different kill cards.

Absolutely! Combo-based decks are super fun, I support all creation of them lol. I have 4 Demonics because this is for casual play, otherwise I would definitely use Worldly instead if I had to.

Looks really nice. I've been working on one of these decks too. It is pretty similar but I have a few suggestions for you to consider.

Demonic is restricted or banned depending on what format you play, but if you play casual use it for use. If not then put in the Worldly tutor.

Lightning Greaves is great and reusable protection.
Asceticism is great protection for all creatures.
Viscera Seer is a great and cheap card to sacrifice too.
Carrion Feeder is also nice to sacrifice to and hes +1/+1 is permanent.
Birds of Paradise is a good mana booster.

Good luck with your deck.

Thanks for the suggestions! Some I've considered before, but you have a point with the cheaper sacrificing creatures.
-This is for casual so I use the Demonics over Worldly.
-Lightning Greaves are awesome and cheap (mana-wise anyway), I just don't have any. They could most likely replace Canopy Covers. Swiftfoot Boots are about to come out also, and while they would cost 1 more to drop and equip, they give the sweet gift of hexproof over shroud (which I think is pretty cool.)
-Asceticism I've thought about, as it really does do an amazing job of keeping your creatures happy (hexproof AND regeneration...akljfkdjfdkfj). The problem is that it just costs too damn much. If I have enough mana to get that out, I would rather already have a solid grip on one of the combos and having that set in motion. It could possibly be nice to throw one or two in though for some stall time, I just don't know what I would replace.
-Viscera Seer is completely replacing Bloodthrone Vampire. It's cheaper, and it gives the scry advantage. Excellent call!
-Carrion Feeder is cheap as well but I'd rather have the scry effect for sure
-Birds of Paradise really should be in here, I just really have no idea what I could trade them in for.

I appreciate the ideas, this deck will definitely be better for them

You are welcome.
Here is my current build and it has honestly been kicking serious ass against a lot of my friends decks.
http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=189723

I have found that if Melira is already protected that putting Canopy cover on Carrion Feeder and then pumping him to something huge has been very effective and the Canopy makes him hard to block.

One reason I like the asceticism is for its regeneration function. If someone is running surgical extraction last thing I need is for melira to hit the graveyard. So it works as a double protection for all my creatures. Surgical extraction is also the reason behind Tormod's Crypt in my side board incase I need to blow up my own graveyard or if I am using alter of dementia against a player running emrakul the aeons torn.

I'm still trying to decide if there is anything I can get rid of in favor of Asceticism... And you are dead-on with the Tormod's Crypt. It is absolutely crucial when milling people with pesky Eldrazi in their decks, but no one I play with IRL even uses any (or Surgical Extraction, for that matter). You can consider the Nature's Spiral(s) to be replaced in the SB with those if one of my circle ever did wise up and get some of those amazing cards. I use Nihil Spellbomb(s) in the SB for my Bloodcrank, since that's Standard and the whole win condition involves milling.

Ded; "Sorry about that, I've been struggling to keep Wards in check lately... PUT THAT DOWN... ahem, as I was saying, Wards is being a big problem lately, but (as much as I hate to admit it) he does have a point. Melira's ability that you're trying to manipulate here says: 'Creatures you control can't have -1/-1 counters placed on them.' and persist reads: 'When this creature is put into a graveyard from play, if it had no -1/-1 counters on it, return it to play under its owner's control with a -1/-1 counter on it.' Now while Melira does prevent -1/-1 counters being placed on your creatures, persist doesn't put a -1/-1 counter on the creature, it returns with the -1/-1 counter already there so Melira's ability won't prevent it. What I can suggest is replacing her with Juniper Order Ranger. While he's a more expensive (mana) creature, his ability will get the result you wanted from Melira."

Ded (after beating Wards to a pulp... again); "After reading up on this matter, which didn't take too long, I found I am in fact wrong about Melira and persist. This is what proves me wrong:

'112.6h
This new addition to the list of rules explaining where abilities work says that if an object has an ability that says counters can't be placed on it, that ability functions while the object is entering the battlefield. "Placed" carries double duty, meaning adding counters while an object is on the battlefield and also having an object entering the battlefield with counters, so the ability of Melira's Keepers, and Tatterkite before it, has to work in both situations.

In fact, the dual nature of "placed" leads to some pretty interesting interactions. Take Melira, Sylvok Outcast. Her second ability effectively means "-1/-1 counters can't be put on creatures you control as they enter the battlefield." This is awesome if that creature is Etched Monstrosity.'

This and other new additions to the rules can be found here:
http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/141a&page=4

I do apologize and I am taking ideas on how to deal with Wards."

haha I appreciate the enthusiasm from both Ded and, a-hem, Wards (lol). I honestly didn't think this would work either when I first saw the potential combo, but as you have specifically shown (in case anyone else doesn't think this works, they can simply reference your comment :D) I looked up the ruling and immediately discovered that I could and should make this deck.

I use Melira in multiple decks; I was already mostly using a green/white for casual and of course Phyrexian Unlife and Melira went right in there (aw, Melira has -insert protection here- and you aren't playing any disenchant/alt. win conditions? I'll try and make this quick for you...) I honestly cannot believe that they made such a cheap, powerful card (so many pesky infect decks are around now), and that it is worth only A LITTLE OVER A DOLLAR.

WTF WOTC!?!?!??!?!? I LOVE YOU!!!

Wards; "Gerald, Gerald, Gerald *shakes head* You are one of the type of people I like to... ack..."

Ded (strangling Wards... again); "Well, almost all the new decks I look at are Standard, only the 'Front Page' decks tend to be non-standard and even then some of them are standard. You just need to look hard enough, also don't forget to check the 'Upcoming' list too."

There are definitely plenty of good standard decks floating around on this site, even some that make the most popular list and, more often, the upcoming list.

Check out my B/U Bloodcrank deck, it's a pretty effective Standard combo deck. Everyone and their mother has made a version of bloodcrank recently though, so I'm not surprised that it did not get anywhere near most popular lol

Wow.... I never realized just how abusable Melira is. @.@ Looking at this build and the comments... Damn, that is SICK and AWESOME.

I think my brain may explode... Kind of want to see if a Standard deck can be built to abuse her and still win consistantly. Definitely amazing for non-Standard possibilities, though.

Hello again. I have continued to tweak my deck and found a few g/b cards that are at least worth a sideboard and figured I would suggest them to you.

Maelstrom Pulse (Crazy good removal)
Life/Death (a little better than Nature's Spiral)
Golgari Germination (if you want infinite creatures.)

This has got to be against some rule somewhere. I really can't think of anything to make this MORE scary... My only thought is to use Darksteel Plates instead of or in addition to your Greaves/Canopy Cover, only because as per the rule set, creatures that can't be TARGETED can be destroyed by "blanket" effects such as Damnation or Wrath of God or what have you. But with a Darksteel plate instead of Since she is indestructible and can not have counters placed on her, the only way to get rid of her is to bounce her, and at that point you just play her again and re equip... Anyway. I hope you take a look at my latest deck, READY?! AIM! FIRE! it's a Legacy built archer deck that doesn't have any amazing or mindblowing combos in it but gets the job done with lots of little pointy flying things. Thanks for your time.

Absolutely! You could use that to make a variation on this deck that drops huge Eldrazi/artifact creatures on turn 3/4. I used to abuse Ashnod's Altar with Myr Retreiver and Disciple of the Vault for infinite loss of life in my old artifact deck.

Smart, for that purpose it's even cheaper then "Krark-Clan Ironworks"

Kulrath Knight is cool but WAY too expensive to be in this deck... I'm going for the quick kill here. Blowfly Infestation is also really cool but again I don't really care about killing my opponent's creatures, I want to just kill him/her as fast as possible, and also the whole point is to not even have any -1/-1 counters on my persist guys. Thanks for the suggestions though!

Wow so I havent been on the vault for quite some time, and holy crap this deck got some support! I'm actually playing with this one irl (except without the Fetches and Demonics cuz those are super pricey) and it annoys the daylights out of my circle lol. One of my friends even made a half-assed extraction just to take away my Melira, so that's saying something! Congrats and thanks :)

Hi there again Majician.

Just figured I would share my latest exploits with melira and see what you thought about it. I wanted to find ways to either speed up the deck, make it more reliable or give it a way to win that doesn't directly involve the combo. I haven't bought the cards I need yet because I am not sure which build to play. I tried to make a hybrid deck with G/B ExplorerZenith and Nic Fit. Here is what I came up with.

1st is only a slight shift from my original deck with G/B Explorer elements.
http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=283841

2nd is G/B Explorer with Melira combo elements added in.
http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=283690

3rd is Nic Fit birthing pod with Melira combo elements added in.
http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=283161

Either way Cabal Therapy, Phyrexian Tower, Eternal Witness and Diabolic Intent seem like good cards to consider.
