Deck Description

Izzet getting better? After Gatecrash, it may be getting a little better.

This is an RTR block constructed deck. This means I cannot use staple cards like Elixir of Immortality or Invisible Stalker, but it is also a portend of the future with rotation a certainty. While a card like Elixir might get reprinted, a card like Invisible Stalker probably won't. In any case, it is a good idea to see how the block performs.

As an aside, I included 4 Mizzium Mortars in my build. I obtained these Mizzium Mortars at well under $1 on MTGO but the price has subsequently skyrocketed for no apparent reason. I include some gameplay footage which demonstrates that while a Mizzium Mortar can be a difference maker, it can also come up short. In my opinon, it is a card like any other and should not be skyrocketing and should generally be cheap and not overpriced.

In any case, I took advantage of some of the new mechanics and cards in Gatecrash, as well as plummeting prices on Izzet cards, to build a new Izzet deck. Izzet still seems to have a ways to go, but it is getting better.

I added a Cloudfin Raptor which should evolve quickly in this deck. I also picked up Guttersnipe at a nickle. I refused to purchase Guttersnipe at 15 cents, but at a nickle, I picked one up. Guttersnipe works very well with the new cipher mechanic. Cipher is a variant of flashback, but seems a bit fairer to me as most things can be easily removed (Invisible Stalker notwithstanding). Hands of Binding was an easy pick and I'm taking a chance with Voidwalk possibly targeting their creature and possibly targeting Soulsworn Spirit or Izzet Staticaster. So far, it is a nice option, but costly to cast.

Mercurial Chemister also dropped in price, but the casting cost seems a bit high and I'm not sure if it should be mainboarded. (Update: I've replace Mercurial Chemister with Annihilating Fire). Izzet Statiscasters provide limited removal.

Hypersonic Dragon dropped to a nickle and was well worth it. The sideboard includes Glaring Spotlight, Mugging, and Aetherize. Aetherize tends to force the opponent into a different attack style. Having just one played can force the opponent to reconsider all out attacks. Mugging makes for some nice spot removal. I opted for Syncopate as a possible counterspell.

My deck may not be there yet, but overall Izzet is improving and worth re-exploring as the prices on Izzet cards drop and the next release looms.

Deck discussion for Izzet Getting Better

Keep up the awesome decks! I always look forward to seeing a new one. Your decks are always different from what the overwhelming amount of players play, and you see the full potential in cards others don't. Your decks are perfect for me because not being old enough for a job can really limit my Magic experience, but you have proven that wrong. Keep it up!
