Deck Description

*POST ROTATION*

An interesting take on a Trading Post deck. It focuses on getting Volatile Rig onto the board and then wiping the board clean while continuing to get him back from your graveyard with Trading Post. Your threats include Chandra's Phoenix who gives you insane card advantage when he goes back to your hand. He also acts as a sort of combo with Angelic Accord. You can continue to discard him to gain the 4 life needed to pump out an angel and keep getting him back. Another threat you have is Boros Reckoner. He can redirect the Volatile Rig damage to the opponent to deal 8 total damage or he can finish off any creature with toughness 5-8. And if you can get 2 or more Ajani +1/+1 counters on him then he doesn't die to Volatile Rig but still redirects damage. Your other threat is Angelic Accord and the planeswalkers as they will not die when Volatile Rig does.

*FEEDBACK IS MUCH NEEDED AND I WOULD LIKE THIS DECK FINE TUNED!!!*

Deck discussion for Volatile Post

I really like the synergy in your deck, especially between Chandra's Phoenix and Trading Post. Have you thought of running Spark Trooper mainboard? I run him in my deck with Ajani, If you drop Ajani on turn 3 followed by Spark Trooper on 4 you can swing for 12 and gain 12 which can be very hard for your opponent to recover from a 24 point swing so early on. Then you can also sacrifice him after swinging with post. If you wouldn't mind checking out my R/W deck it's called Ajani's Playground. Thanks a lot.

That seems like a backbreaking line of play!!! I think I am going to put at least 1 if not 2 Spark Troopers in after hearing that. I don't think I want to run all four of either as that will force me to move away from my current strategy but drawing a Spark Trooper late game when both my opponent and I are living off the top would be a very good game ender. especially if I have an Angelic Accord in play to leave an angel behind. Thank you so much for the suggestion!!!

how about accorders shield? you can sac and play it for free each time, if you attach it to reckoner, he can attack this turn and block later, and also he can now survive volatile rigs' blast!! that would be awesome, but the question is what to remove..

Wow I never thought about that card!!! That seems like a very good interaction. Being able to cycle it early on wouldn't make it a dead card in an opening hand. Then when I equip it to a Boros Reckoner being able to absorb and therefore redirect more damage would be awesome. It also puts him out of Mizzium Mortars Range which is very cool. I think going down to 1 Spark Trooper is fine because I don't want it in my opening hand. And I think 3 Prophetic Prisms is plenty of card draw. Thank you so much for that suggestion!!!

i dont think you have much use for ajani as a pw now. there should be a better card that would fit its place. something that can abuse the life gain or token from angelic accord... lets say... rootborn defence? it makes another token if you have at least one, it makes your creatures indestructible meaning, more staying time for boros reckoner if it becomes a target of doomblade or other removals, and since your creatures are indestructible, ALL creatures will survive if rig will explode. just a suggestion though.

See I do like the indestructible effect, but as Angelic Accord is my only token producer I don't think the populate is all that good. If I were to use one I think it would be Boros Charm as that costs 1 mana less and also has the option to deal 4 to the opponent which can get Chandra's Phoenix back. However I really want to have board presence after Volatile Rig wipes it. And there aren't too many good threats to put there however. If there were a better white planeswalker I would probably put him there. But he also has some good synergy in the deck. If you use his -3 on a Spark Trooper it is an absolute blowout. But you can also use his -3 on the Volatile Rig if you don't want him to wipe the board. It gives him evasion so he won't attack into a clogged board and take damage. And if they happen to have a flyer the Double Strike prevents the flyer from doing damage. I think Ajani should hold this slot for now, but it might change in the future

wow, great synergy. I always knew volatile rig/trading post combo but with the addition of angelic accord and chandra's phoenix (and trading post reprinted) from m14, it makes the deck more stable. this is really nice!

I like the changes man, looks like not only a really fun deck to play but def. could be playable in current metagame. I do think you should keep Ajani in the deck though, like we talked about earlier by just adding Spark Trooper as a one of gives you an alternate win condition late game when your relying on top decking. How committed are you to Flames of the Firebrand? I like it more in sideboard, I have been running Brimstone Volley in my deck (Ajani's Playground) you would have no trouble getting morbid to activate and at instant speed the 5 damage to opponents face is huge.

i think the reason why he is keeping flames of firebrand on this deck is to ping 1 damage to opponent (to have the phoenix come back to your hand) and ping 2 more damage to others.

That's exactly why I want the Flames of the Firebrand!!!

True the Brimstone Volley morbid effect is still very powerful for 3 mana, but you have a good game plan as far as getting Phoenix back from GY. Good Luck with your deck, I'm sure it will do great at your next tourney.

you can also add cards that can protect your trading post cause that's the heart of this deck. there are lots of cards that can destroy artifacts (wear/tear, naturalize) so maybe mainboarding a charm or 2? but the question is what to remove :p

I actually did not realize that it gave all your PERMANENTS indestructible. That actually is appealing enough for me to play that mainboard. I think 2 of them is good for now and I can bring in more if needed. Another change I made is went down to 1 Warleader's Helix and up to 3 Shock. Helix is powerful and has great synergy with Angelic Accord, but I have plenty of ways to pump out angels and the 4 CMC is a little lofty. And Shocking there 1st turn play is huge especially so we don't get in too much of a hole because our deck takes a while to get going. But Thank You both Atcel and strawhat07 for your advice!!! It has been so helpful and I am seriously considering making this my new deck. It seems so powerful and synergistic and with your help it became ever better. So Thank You!!

How is your deck working out now MasoCrave? I took some of you suggestions on my R/W to speed it up and re posted an entirely new deck called Ajani's Playground : Reloaded, mind taking a look at it now?

Sure I'll look at it. As for this deck it works pretty well. Unfortunately I had to take out our Spark Trooper/Ajani combo as it was powerful but inconsistent to draw. And the 1WW cost of Ajani made it difficult to cast sometimes. Also if I did get him out turn 3 he felt very weak as I could not protect him well. I also took out the Accorder's Shield as Haunted Plate Mail is much more powerful after a board wipe and a Boros Reckoner with a Haunted Plate Mail is much scarier than with an Accorder's Shield. Then I also added some untility cards here and there and I think this deck is more consistent.

I like the utility cards in the deck. Reckoner w/Haunted Plate Mail looks pretty nasty lol.
