Standard: Izzet Token Ctrl Brn

by Memnite on 24 July 2013

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (15 cards)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

I wanted to make budgety Izzet Deck that would continue to be in Standard once M13 and the Innistrad Block rotates

Red for Removal, and Burn
Blue for Removal, Control and Card Advantage

Sideboard probably needs work, I just listed some cards that have good synergy...
Against other control decks sideboard more counters and possibly more draw power like Judge's Familiar, Izzet Charm, Rapid Hybridization and Thoughtflare
Against aggro decks you want to sideboard boardwipes like Electrickery, Izzet Staticaster and Mizzium Mortars

Please comment on any ideas for changes to Main Deck or Sideboard
I think the deck looks pretty sturdy as it is though

I'm also trying to keep costs at a minimum so that's why we're missing out on stuff like Ral Zarek

How to Play

I lied. Delver of Secrets is the only thing that is in the Innistrad Block
I put it in because it's just too good. 1 to cast for an eventual 3/2 flier (good target for cipher)
Goblin Electromancer because cheaper instants and sorceries are OP
Guttersnipe so you can shock them while you shock them
Young Pyromancer because everyone wants an army of 1/1s

Control suite:
Shock/Burn/Izzet Charm can kill smaller creatures while you save
Turn/Disperse to deal with bigger threats
You can Disperse their big threats (creatures and other permanents) and then counter it when they play it again with Counterflux/Cancel/Negate/Essence Scatter

Notice that all my instants/sorceries are around 3 to cast (less than that with Goblin Electromancer out). This is so that I can cast them more often (and proc Young Pyro and Guttersnipe) and so that I won't need too much mana to cast instants on my opponents turn.

Goblin Electromancer makes Goblin Rally fairly cheap to play.
Then you use an overload Dynacharge on your 4 goblin tokens (as well as all the 1/1 elemental tokens that Young Pyromancer made) and swing for a bajillion

In the end you'll usually win from a combination of:
a) Guttersnipe's ability procs (2 damage adds up fast)
or
b) Army of 1/1 tokens from Young Pyromancer/Goblin Rally that finish the game when Overloaded Dynacharge'd

The Shocks and Burns are also useful as extra damage to finish

Good choice :)
My late game choice of win condition is Goblin Rally + Overloaded Dynacharge tho

aetherling is also heaps expensive >>

Oh okay. Well for the sideboard maybe teleportal to switch in for dynacharge some games? I ran a deck that's main win con was blustersquall on the end of their turn, then dynacharge on mine but I eventually just ran teleportal against some decks. You just might have some troubles punching through that late is all. One garruk and you're stopped dead by hordes of dudes

Good idea.
I don't think that many other decks can compete in tokens especially when I'm running so much control
(plus I've got Electrickery, Izzet Staticaster and Mizzium Mortars sideboarded)

I thought about that but I was a bit reluctant
Even with Goblin Electromancer it costs so much to cast !

I can see where you're coming from though

Dragonform is like overloaded teleportal+dynacharge in 1

well one copy or two could find their place, probably is not the best card you may want but swinging with an army of dragons just sounds too sweet for me :)

Mizzium Mortars should definitelly be mainboard. Also consider Cyclonic Rift.

Some token placing cards from Theros would be: Master of Waves or Abhorrent Overlord , but they would totally change the deck. Did you also consider placing Magma Jet or Lightning Strike? Theros seems to have some nice cards.
